KT; Yes, that was a tough one to agree with Jeff, but sometimes he does think straight, not real often but sometimes. If you have to have the soil loose before they will rent you a big loader then it must not be much of a loader. I was fortunate that the bottom of my borrow pit is big enough and reasonably level for me to use the boxblade to rip the soil loose. That made it lots easier for a small machine like mine to scoop it up. Working alone with my little Deere I felt like a big timer with no big machine nearby to compare it with. Frank.

Dennis, my little 6kw genset at the lake is a brush-type generator head.

Last time I noticed it had well over 1,000 hours on it. I've only ever replaced the spark plugs and oil, I've never touched the generator head itself.

Rented a 2009 Hynundai Sonata from Hertz and drove it from NJ to Boston for a test drive of 550 miles.<br>

The Sonata had a V6 engine with dual exhausts, looked very muscualr from the butt view, with chrome exhaust covers protruding through the bumper.<br>
<br>
Highway cruising very nice at 80+ miles per hour, excellent acceleration.<br>
<br>
Averaged 29.3 mpg on the whole trip.<br>

Confortable fabric seats.<br>
<br>
Cons: Poor guages, blue odometer difficult to read except at night, clock black LCD invisible.<br>

The Hynudai Sonata has come a long way, a very nice car, makes it tough to justify the extra cost of the superb intrumentation and fit and finish of Honda and Toyota.

In order for a B/H to do anything but mess up turf it has to have something that engineers describe as "breakout force" (CadPlans calls it "ripping force"), that is a measure of the force that the bucket exerts in an upward direction.

If you look at the tractor and B/H from the side, you will see that, despite the outriggers which will only really help with lateral forces (pulling you into the hole instead of pulling the dirt out, that's why they're on an angle) and the dead weight, almost the entire force created by the B/H lifting upwards is countered by the upper link making the weight of lifting the tractors front end greater than the weight in the B/H bucket and so the bucket of dirt comes up instead of the front wheels of the tractor.

If you don't believe me, just replace your upper link with a hydraulic cylinder that has a pressure gauge connected to the rod side port. I'm betting you will be astounded by the readings you get.

As for the comment by 'pubwvj' "Nothing about either time the casing broke seems related to the backhoe. Rather the first time there was a visible flaw in the manufacturing of the transmission casing along the top and it broke there from the weak spot. Five years later the new casing broke but in a completely different spot on the bottom after I rolled over a large rock that I had unknowingly dropped in front of the tractor." I'm astounded, the dealer must be able to really spin a story. To say that anything but excessive loads broke that casing is unbelievable.

Visible flaw? Heck, there's a big dam hole in the top of every transmission casing, why don't they all break there?

My buddy had about 40 yards of grindings dropped in his driveway. He didn't spread them right away. They sat for a few days in the summer sun and they started to recombine. He did a poor job of spreading it. A few years later he had me uise my backhoe to break it up. I could barely get through it to break it up. Once it was broken up- and respread it was never the same--always had ruts and soft spots.

Unfortunately this seems to be a weak spot on the R400's. I haven't gotten into it in great detail since I managed to fix mine by changing the hydraulic intake filter (a screen in the tank) and changing out all of the hydraulic fluid. I understand that it has to do with the charging pump to the main pump and parts can be a problem.

I have a problem of my own. I bought an R400 over the internet (sight unseen, pictures only, trusted a dealer, bad idea). It came with the front bucket removed and a bobcat type bucket installed on a home made quick attach. Whoever made the quick attach didn't know what they were doing and screwed up the geometry of the lift system. I sure would appreciate it if someone would contact me or tell me the distances from the lower hinge pin to the upper hinge pin on the factory bucket and any offsett from the vertical. It would also help to know the distance from pin to pin (centerline?) for the linkage from the tilt arm to the bucket assembly. Can anyone help

Let me add: for your hills and snow work, insist on 4WD. Decide the tire tread: "ag" for somewhat better traction, "turf" for mowing. I wouldn't consider any engine other than diesel. Find out where to get road-tax-free fuel. If you have cold winters, include a block heater.

Focus on attachments. Except for towing, tractors don't do any work; they just transport the attachments for you, usually rear-mounted. You can get them any time but the more you include at the outset the better the deal. The dealer can advise you.

Yes, require that it takes "Category 1" rear attachments. (Many subcompacts do, as opposed to garden tractors that take the tiny "Category 0" ones.)

A rear blade won't move earth like a box-blade, but it can smooth out loose soil, it moves snow, and costs little.

The exception to getting attachments later is the front loader (costly but versatile). You want that attachment to already be on the machine before you accept it.

Include in the deal a thorough session on safely operating and maintaining everything, delivery, one 1-hour service call, and a few years' worth of expendables like filters.

Last comment on your first tractor. A car has a design life of 10-15 years. With a tractor it's closer to 50, and it holds its value. So choose right, and take care of it.

I'm only talking generalities, having no idea what an RTV500 is.

If it's simple driveline lockup, you could try towing it for a few feet in the opposite direction it last drove in. But there are different kinds of diff-locks (don't even know if yours is L/R or F/R), and they're subject to damage, so if that's part of the problem, taking pressure off the wheels (and trying to rotate them a bit by hand) might be a safer fix to try. If you have or can borrow the equipment, it would be even better to have all four up at the same time.

If you get it released, the general operational rule for the future is to not put it in 4 when on a non-slip surface, and use the diff-lock only when needed, and as briefly as possible.

Actually after my question to you I did go to the web and searched Tri-Fuel generators. I only saw Tri-Fuel for Gas/NG/LP options but none that included diesel as one of the fuels...for obvious reasons. But with these three fuels, one still has to rely on a public supply in the event of a crisis...but I suppose having 3 options is better than having only one.

Not that I can notice. I think they only claim a 5% increase.

I just remembered another problem I encountered. I had an HPX that had all the rivets sheared off one side of the driven clutch. It was hard to see when it was sitting still but it shuddered like you said when it took off. But when you took the belt off you could spin one side of the driven clutch like a top.

My 6' wide skid steer bucket is nearly 500 lb., my industrial grapple is a few pounds over 800--that cuts my lifting by 300 lb.

On a small machine with marginal rating to start, a few pounds can make a BIG difference.
