Drawing on my experience helping in my Fathers gas station when studded tires were the new thing putting studs in used tires didn't work very well. The little holes where you shot the studs into would get packed full of dirt. The studs have a little flange on the end that holds them in the hole, and there is a grouve in the bottom of the hole to fit the flange on the stud. Getting the dirt out of the grouve in the bottom of this hole was all but impossible.

The Turf specials i bought are wider than the standard R3 Turfs and spread the weight of my unit pretty well. However, I would agree that not mowing on very wet turf and soil is a good idea. I have 15 to 25 degree slopes on my property and mowing then when they are very wet is quite scary. I can mow pretty easily without leaving ruts and tracks, with the grass wetter than it would be from morning dew, and with soft soil, but not in very wet soil.<br>

I use these tires during the winter for snow plowing and they provide excellent traction in the snow and even on roads with melting ice underneath the snow.

I've welded broken cast iron before, but never to a piece of steel.

Welding cast iron requires a very slow heating process prior to welding. Heat the entire piece of cast iron with a torch..slowly. Increase the heat gradually, and make sure the entire piece is very hot prior to doing any welding.

The reverse is true once you're done welding the cast iron. Make sure you keep the cast iron hot, and allow it to cool very slowly after welding. You can do this by covering it with asbestos, or some other insulation that won't burn.

As for the cylinder you're working on, I wouldn't attempt to save it. I think it's a good thing that it broke apart the way it did. Give it a proper burial and find yourself a different one.

I just got done paying my dealer close to $650.00 to fix this. I had the same problem, turn key to any position and completely dead. Turns out it was the wiring harnesses on the right hand side of the tractor. Apparently what happens if you don't use the tractor enough is the pins inside the wiring harnesses on these tractors, gets corroded and then burns right off. My suggestion is to find out which harness/harnesses are bad and replace the wiring harnesses and put some dielectric grease on ALL connectors. It can also be as simple as the ignition switch. An ignition switch costs about $58.00. My tractor is over 5 years old and only has about 130 hours on it. This summer I am going to pull all connectors apart and put dielectric grease on all connections. Hopefully I won't have this problem again.

Mark, our 05 Highlander did not use individual tire sensors and instead used the ABS sensor to detect low pressure. When the tire pressure drops the effective diameter shrinks, the tire seems to spin faster, and the TPMS lights up an indicator in the instrument panel. There was no audible alarm. That system was awful, it false alarmed all the time when we traveled gravel roads and resetting it ever week was a pain. Eventually we gave up and just ignored the light.

The Tacoma has individual sensors, which has been dead reliable, but a real PIA for swapping tires+wheels between winter and summer. There's really no excuse for a design that requires the dealer to reprogram sensors with a wheel swap. That could have been done automatically with good design. Some guys have removed all five sensors and put them in a sealed PVC tube with a valve stem. Pump it up to pressure, throw the tube in the glovebox, and voila, no TPMS light.

Harvey, we've had three vehicles with TPMS. An 08 Subaru, 05 Toyota Highlander, and the 07 Tacoma and none of them have any special requirements for rotation.

I've taken to puttign a little 'Diesel 911" or similar additive in every time i fill the tank. My tractor seems to gel the fuel any time it's below freezing, even if it's winter blend. You can get a bottle that will treat a hundred gallons for about 10 bucks. I haven't gelled since i started using it.

Kenny I'm pretty sure you can turn your bucket around and try it if it's the pin-on type versus a quick attach AND the dipper stick AND the cylinder push linkage fit up. It seems like I saw a picture of a mini-ex in the UK digging under a sidewalk that way.

When all I had was my backhoe, I dug up 20 trees for a guy and transplanted them with only the hoe. The trick is getting behind the tree which was failrly easy: I used one downrigger to tilt the machine to one side so the hoe was angled around the tree.

There are commercial buckets for skid steers call stumping or rooting buckets that perfrom the task you were thinking.

In fact my buddy with a large tree farm made one for his skid steer from a 36" diameter x 3/8" thick wall pipe that was sliced like the tip of a quill ink pen and welded to the mounting bracket.

Also, I saw a version of the above but it was for a compact skid steer and had a vibrating mechanism that helped with penetration.

And one more thing, there are manufacturers out there that make a skid steer quick attach plate for mini-ex's and up that allow you to even use pallet forks for example or pretty much anything a skid steer would use.

My dealer tells me that 600 hours per year is the "industry standard" according the book he showed me on trade-in values. Seeing as the tractor is about 18 years old and using the book value, that would mean about 10,800 hours. However, most diesels of this type are generally expected to last about 5,000 before a major rebuild--some more some less depending on how it was or was not maintained and under what conditions. A typical engine ovrhaul; can run $5,000-8,000.

And it's not just the engine that could require an overhaul, there is everythingelse mechanical or electrical that could need major service too. My rule of thumb is when it gets high hours or major things are going or ready to go, it's time to off it. Otherwise, you'll have an expensive (or cheap depending how you look at it) doorstop.

I have seen machines have 10,000 hours on them and run fine; some, not so much. If your tractor had closer to 5,000 hours on it and being 18 years old, I think I'd be filling out a new requisition form in a year or so.

Update: My kubota is fixed! there was a "loop" in the wiring harness near the starter that had a bad connection. It was a factory connector. A service tech. told me I did not need that connection for anything! He made mention that maybe it was for some factory add-on accessories..?? or something. Anyhow, it was corroded inside, so after the connector was eliminated and the wires were re-connected, she starts like a charm! No problems at all.<br>

First of all, in typical snow removal operations the Turfs are about the best choice you could make. Remember, the tractors tires are running in the area that has already been cleaned. Short of studs or chains you will not get better ice traction, or cold weather traction on a hard surface period, than you will with turfs.

As for tire wear, if the machine was run on a hard surface in 4WD, the fronts could be bald in as little as 200 hours.

Mine was a similar brand that worked as Joel and Murf described. Plastic-covered metal clothesline won't last a season. Even proper cable doesn't last forever, so when you get it working, make a sketch for when you have to replace it. You'll likely need wire clamps so get them with the wire so they're the right size.<br>

When I first got my blower I expected to adjust the outflow direction maybe once a session. In fact, not having a cab, I was constantly moving it, so make sure it works.<br>

After reading your advice, I now remember the dealer didn't have both filters in stock, so I bought a NAPA gold cross reference. I think I will change out both filters with new again (both Kubota this time), and invest in a magnetic block heater.

I did use the dealer recommended fluid, which I believe was the super UDT. I will double check that tomorrow. Wifes car is in the way, and can't get to the container.

My cooling fan/pulley is loose on my Shibaura 2003 and I'm starting to hear a rubbing sound when the engine runs. Is it possible that the pulley is just loose or is this a definite sign that the water pump bearings are going? Any source for new pumps and repair manual?<br>

Also, does any one know off hand the oil filter compatible with this tractor -- will ford filters fit?<br>

I have two jd 870's And replaced the clutch on one about 3 year ago. It is just about the same as a truck except you must have a way to keep the front end stable when you separate the two halfs. As far as aline go's I just made the tool simple towel to fit the hole and some tape to enlarge the towel to fit the clutch spline. this center the clutch while I bolted it back together.
It only took me about 3hours to get it apart and 5 hours back. The hardest part was to come up with the tool.
Your will aso need a tool to set 3rods that ride on throw out bearing this is done so you get even presure and the clutches properly. This all in the jd tech Manual I have it on cd form. The you got off ebay should have it in . If not let know. If you have any questions email me.

ive just accepted that it is a small tractor and i over use it. ive straightened my lift arm twice now and it is bent again. but it is parked right now due to a roll over and a broke cv joint. i havent opend the front drive yet to look for damage to the gears. the boss of the house said repairs would have to wait till after christmas. as far as my 3point hitch solutions. i know they make some factory parts for stabilization but ive priced them and like everything else a little over the top. ive resorted to tring to pay just a little more attention. and accepting i cantpush/drag mt rushmore all at once. the next time i straighten my lift arm im going to weld some angle across to strengthen it back up. i like the tractor and as far as the problems that have happened, it is all my fault. all i can say is it has been a learning experiance

As Greg said you my have a pickup screen that is clogged. If the fluid has appeared milky that is a good indication of water in the fluid. A pickup screen will ice over with water and starve a pump. If you can get the tractor in a warm building for several days till everything internally is warm then drain it and replace with new fluid and filters. I have no knowledge of your specific tractor, but check your owhers manual for the instructions on cleaning the pickup screen. Merry Christmas. Frank.
