hand throttle will not stay where it's positioned anywhere above idle. foot thottle appears to function normally, anyboby know how the hand throttle is held where its put? I have looked at JDparts.com but I'm not clear as to how it works<br>

Fuel is good and battery is good. It starts immediately when it's not cold outside. I believe your test will only test the fact that there is power going to the glow plugs and not the plugs themselves? correct? And wouldn't the test light be used between the glow plug wire and ground rather than +? (unless I'm reading something wrong)
I have not even dug in there at all to look yet, maybe I can just pop em out and turn the ignition on and see if they're getting hot. I figured I'd get a quick idea on here before I even started tinkering with it. I think it's supposed to get a little warmer sometime later this week so I'll fool with it then. I hate mechanicing when it's cold outside. Fortunately I've got my trusty old Snapper Grounds Cruiser to get me by till then. Gutless little thing (10 very abused horsepower with 2500 or more hours on it)but it NEVER fails.

I'll keep checkin in here and if nothing comes before I dig in I'll post the results.

Basically, I'm looking at this in the "nice to have" list, not the "need to have." I have used this tractor many times, which, unfortunately, is how I know that the pinion shaft is broken. The PTO would sometimes "engage" and sometimes not. We were told by someone that there is something like a woodruff key that may need to be replaced (old one sheared???). When I operated it, I had to keep an eye on the temp gauge. I'd really only "need" to have it all working when my wife and I build a new house in the woods and I need land cleared a few years down the road. If I got it from him, I'd put it in my side of the garage, park my truck outside and work on it when I had time.

Would you have use for an engine for your L2202 for spare parts or to rebuild? I have original engine for my L2202 that has a blown rod bearing, but is in great shape, and working order, otherwise. Quite rebuild-able if you're mechanicaly savvy. I am not, so I replaced it. Hope you have had luck w/ replacing differential.

Didn't think about the slosh factor, your probably right raising it one inch may not help. I just got back from working on the tractor and had it running for a half hour with no problem plugging and the amount of rust in sediment bowl was minimal so gonna see if I can keep it running now.

There's a simple way to tell if it's a case of poor connections or bad cables.

Put a known good battery on a set of large gauge booster cables and go straight to the starter itself.

If it cranks faster then start looking at, or replacing, cables to the starter.

Like EW have not used tiller on tractor but the walkbehind I had was reverse rotation Troy Bilt. I do not believe there is MORE compation with the reverse rotation. If there is any difference it would have to be very little. I know the soil after the Troy Bilt went though it could not have been torn up any better and has been said it was smoother than a forward rotating tiller.

The question on the rocks, don't know, we don't have them.

The comment about trash wrapping around the tines and such, it has been a few years since I stopped with and sold my tiller but never remember that being an issue on the reverse rotation. Mine left a clean path. Would only consider a reverse rotation walk behind tiller after using one and watching step father and brother in law fight the foward rotation models.

Of course won't know till I tear it down but I've seen the inside of engines started with either. On one it broke not only the rings but the lands in the pistons that the rings sit in. The heads were done by the dealer prior to the last owner doing the rings.

On the piston swap: If they swap it will be scrap price vs dealer price and a some old rings to boot. Piston part numbers should be the same if it will swap - 400 and 250.

Just a quick note - the power steering fluid is also NH143. I recently changed this fluid and filter resevoir (~$90+ for the filter, ugh!).

take it you have already looked into adjusting the clutch and it will not develop proper clamping force.

Trent, Chief asked this question and I did not see any reply to it. I would be sure there all is adjusted properly and no linkage binding or anything else preventing the clutch to fully release before spending any such amount of money or work.

Very welcome.

Another semi-related website posting I have been following with GREAT interest and enjoyment on living off the grid might interest some of you as well. I have certainly enjoyed it and learned a LOT from reading it. I think Lisa could write a book on their experience. Her thread certainly has a large and interested following. I hope to be able to get started on a similar project in the near future. A forewarning that you will have some SERIOUS catch up reading to do and high speed internet is a big plus for all the pictures. DEFINITELY WELL worth the read in my opinion. Enjoy!

Doug, check the tractor wrecking yards, and even flea-bay, they often have FEL's off wrecked or dead tractors for cheap.

All you really need is the FEL off a machine that is a similar as yours, past that the mounts will be similar but not exact, and that part of it can be done by merely bolting in replacement mounting bosses in a lot of cases.

Man, that was quick. Thanks for the responses. Too dark out now, but I'll take pics asap. The Gator I have is a 2005 4X4 HPX. What kwschumm says about the evaporative control device sounds like what the mechanic I talked to said. It definitely wasn't an EGR valve. Again THANKS.
