First welcome neighbor.

No price expert but for my nickel, you could be spending serious money in the PTO and in the engine as overheating could be caused by serious problem or simple one. It could also have done a lot of damage even if the cause was simple. At same time sitting is not helping such as cylinder walls and other machined parts and four years for rain on it and into it. He may be insulted but too me $2,000 the top I would consider.

If he sells it and when all repairs are made and you find they were on the low side in cost, then pay him another $1,000 or $2,000. You can be sure if you open it up to find a cracked block you will not then be able to ask for a refund.

Before you buy it, look at all fluids carefully and you may even wish to open the engine and transmission drains to look for water there.

Just wondering, how do you know the PTO worked when it wanted to? Is this his memory and has it been fired up and used recently?

It is possible both the PTO and overheating are due to him using too large a cutter or such on the tractor to where it damaged the PTO clutch and over loaded the engine. But the damage still would be there even if the load were removed.

Good thing you are a tractor mechanic. Breaking a tractor into is not something I would enjoy nor have tools for.

I just got my D1850fd, had to pull it(4th gear) to check it out. Seller thought the solenoid was bad. We made the deal, I took it home and started working on fixing the problem.

Had juice everywhere, but when turn the key to start-nothing.
Tapped starter & solenoid-nothing.
Took starter in, they said it was like a new one.
Battery charger on boost-no good. Battery fully charged.
Cleaned battery posts-nothing.
12.5 volts at the starter.
By-passed the ignition switch with a push button - nothing.
By-passed the clutch switch - nothing.
Used screwdriver to activate the solenoid-nothing.
Took starter off again, wire brushed the contact surfaces and bolted it back on - click, click but starter didn't even begin to spin.

Found an old negative battery cable long enough and still in good shape, unhooked the positive cable(battery & starter), connected the replacement hanging out around everything.

EUREKA!! It fired right up.

I bought a new one the right size, snaked it around and in where it was supposed to be, heat shrink tubing at the rub points, new corrosion pads and petroleum jelly on the battery and I won't have to worry about it now for years.

The old one had so much corrosion on the copper wire inside the factory lead clamp and on down into the insulation that it couldn't carry enough amps to do the job. Yet it didn't really look too bad.

Goodluck with yours, it will really feel good when you get it going.

Had this same thing on a 4x6 diesel found the drive clutch bad spider was broken Remove outside cover and see if the parts fall out

EW; Even with the tiller on the 4310 I still do a shallow pass the first time over. We used to have a tiller on a Deere rider that would give you a thrill ride if you tried to go too deep the first pass. She would just get up and walk you across the garden at warp speed scaring the maltomeal out of you till you had the good sense to shut the tiller off. Another thought on a reverse rotation machine, what happens when they hook a rock ro a root? Do they sit there and jerk and yank till the slip clutch/shear pin gives or the rock/root comes up?

I have a 6x4 diesel gator that doesn't want to start without a lot of cranking if it's anything below 40 degrees F.<br>
The glow plug indicator light comes on and shuts off but I don't know if the plugs are bad and need to be replaced or what. <br>
Does anyone else have cold start problems like this?<br>

First thanks to all for responding as usual very good input. I'm trying to get this tractor running for a friend of ours who just lost her husband in March so I'm really working on a shoestring bubget. That being said this morning I came across this very problem addressed in Farm Show magazine. Mount a tube in the tank about an inch high to prevent drawing from the very bottom of the tank. I;ll let you know how that works out.

Of course won't know till I tear it down but I've seen the inside of engines started with either. On one it broke not only the rings but the lands in the pistons that the rings sit in. The heads were done by the dealer prior to the last owner doing the rings.

On the piston swap: If they swap it will be scrap price vs dealer price and a some old rings to boot. Piston part numbers should be the same if it will swap - 400 and 250.

Just a quick note - the power steering fluid is also NH143. I recently changed this fluid and filter resevoir (~$90+ for the filter, ugh!).

Hardwood thanks for the info I could not think of any other way to lift it either. Wish they made a drop hub assembly for the rear tires.

take it you have already looked into adjusting the clutch and it will not develop proper clamping force.

Trent, Chief asked this question and I did not see any reply to it. I would be sure there all is adjusted properly and no linkage binding or anything else preventing the clutch to fully release before spending any such amount of money or work.

Another semi-related website posting I have been following with GREAT interest and enjoyment on living off the grid might interest some of you as well. I have certainly enjoyed it and learned a LOT from reading it. I think Lisa could write a book on their experience. Her thread certainly has a large and interested following. I hope to be able to get started on a similar project in the near future. A forewarning that you will have some SERIOUS catch up reading to do and high speed internet is a big plus for all the pictures. DEFINITELY WELL worth the read in my opinion. Enjoy!

Doug, check the tractor wrecking yards, and even flea-bay, they often have FEL's off wrecked or dead tractors for cheap.

All you really need is the FEL off a machine that is a similar as yours, past that the mounts will be similar but not exact, and that part of it can be done by merely bolting in replacement mounting bosses in a lot of cases.

Man, that was quick. Thanks for the responses. Too dark out now, but I'll take pics asap. The Gator I have is a 2005 4X4 HPX. What kwschumm says about the evaporative control device sounds like what the mechanic I talked to said. It definitely wasn't an EGR valve. Again THANKS.

Stupeg; A 4 X 24 cylinder with a 2 in. shaft will take about seven seconds to extend and about five to retract using your 11 GPM pump on the rear shaft. If you run your tractor at half throttle on the front shaft might give you 18 - 20 GPM you would take those times to about half, at full throttle it would become pretty wild and pretty unsafe.

Just moved and realize I may need a compact tractor. I'm looking at the MF 2310 for all around use. Mowing, digging, etc. I'm looking now for the snow season. I have a long driveway and would like to snow blow it with the attachment. My concerns is. Will it have enough power, torque to for the wet snow, sleet, slush, etc? Is this a good tractor for the job? MF is down the road from where I live. Thoughts?
