My last light switch comment was a question rather than a statement but admit it may have been confusing. I also admit that I didn't complete my troubleshooting in that I didn't check the wires between the connector plug on the left side of the tractor and the light switch. One or more of those wires could be broken and my diagnosis of the light switch and the conclusions I drew from that test could be flawed. I will try bypassing the light switch at first opportunity. BTW, I had auxilary work lights off an added single pole switch tapped into the rear wiring lead but they quit working too when the headlights went out. Could be related to the headlight problem or separate. Headlight bulbs are good so that is not the problem. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep testing.

As several other posts suggested, it depends on the condition and configuration of the tractor and the operating time shown by the hour meter. If it's low hours, e.g. under 1000 and otherwise in good condition, I'd say it is a very fair price. Some considerations that would add to it's desireabliity: Is it 4-wheel drive? Does it have a front-end loader?

Guess I forgot to mention that our home fuel is LP. The lady I mentioned that is auctioning off her home is elderly, getting by on social security, and would face a potential fuel oil bill of over 6,000.00 just for heat. I have an Aunt now living in an assisted living center who sold her home last fall for the same reason. Yes it's bad for all but especially hard on thne elderly. Frank.

The problem started last fall. I first noticed it when the bucket was full of firewood(five hundred to eight hundred pound load). Over the next month it got worse. I haul the wood up a hill and then down a grade on an old dirt road. The wheel never locks up going up the hill through the woods. The heavier the weight the more it locks up in both two and four wheel drive. At its worse it was locking up with nothing in the bucket. After changing the oil and filter I think it improved some but not much. Probably wishful thinking on my part. I have been laid up most of the winter and all summer so the tractor is now used sparingly. I checked the brakes with the rear tires off the ground. They seem to release with no problem. In free wheel rotation they both stop at about the same time.

Kinda look the same as the "Gator's" to me. Maybe the reverse lift would just push the grass back into the ground and there wouldn't be any clippings to worry about. Yup, my Uncle Verner Von Krautsinduzer, had a 200 MPG carburetor on a 49 Ford but some oil company paid him millions to just burn the blueprints. On and On they go.

Cutter, it was as smooth as a ball hitch, no motion at all.

A properly sized and mated pair of lunette ring and pintle hitch will not have any motion since they are both supposed to be rounded on the contact surfaces, the lunette ring is round stock, and the pintle should have a matching rounded bottom of the hook.

Mind you my truck as loaded heading out (see my pic. # 5, except without the jet boat) wasn't likely to be anything but smooth!! LOL

Hettric; I won't comment on your using super UDT in a Deere, you're on your own there. A few pieces of metal usually looking like a small flake are normal, getting more than maybe a half teaspoon is not. Frank.

Thanks for the classifieds tip. This crawler has been sitting on its trailer for about 2 years now... Time to recycle it into something I will use more often!

Dry wells are great IF: - You have low water tables lower than the bottom of the dry well, - Have soil that drains easily and quickly, - Have more than enough water storage capacity under ground for worst-case scenarios e.g., bad storms, runoff, snow melt. And ideally the dry well should be free of infill (stone, gravel, broken concrete) for maximum storage. If infill is used, keep in mind that by filling the dry well DECREASES the capacity to just a fraction of the original volume---all the capacity you have left is the air spaces between the infill. The so-called dry wells I've done at the insistence of the client had a perforated 6" dia. drop tube to the bottom of the hole and capped like a water well. That way the water level can be monitored and pumped out if necessary. Also the dry well should be lined with a geotextile before infilling to keep the air spaces free of surrounding dirt--otherwise over time as everything settles you'll have just a sunken depression in the ground with no capacity underground.$ Retaining wall drainage

You need to change the oil in the transmission. The brakes run in the oil in the transmission. The John Deere Low Viscosity HyGard can be picked up at any John Deere dealer. The brake chatter is indicative of poor quality or contaminated transmission oil. This information is in the trouble shooting section of the manual and the how-to preceures are in the maintenance section.

Rubber over-the-tire tracks (OTT) will suck out 30% of the net engine power---ask any rubber track seller. They are extremely costly--$3-7,000.

I use lightweight, alloy, high floatation (16" wide) steel OTT tracks on my New Holland LS185.b. If you go to www.tracksplus.com you can order thenm directly from the manufacturer----ask for Sue Wagoner and tell her Jeff from Earthwerks Unlimited in Michigan sent you---she may be able to get you discounted shipping if you mention my name. There are guys on the west coast who buy these tracks from them and resell them at a much higher price--sometimes double the price.

I used these tracks exclusively when I was cleaning up Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi and New Orleans for the Army Corp of Engineers---they loved them since I could climb front yards that previously could not be climbed by regular bobcats. And I used them on the beaches where sugar sand, gravel and clay are the prevailing soils. I could fly and float over sand so fast that I was making roostertails! These tracks outperformed the bar-type tracks made by Grouser or Loegering.

Tom, first things first, you need to know, or remember, the style of slip clutch you have.

Generally speaking they have either a smooth or splined socket that goes over the input shaft of the gearbox on your cutter. The other end will have a means to attach it to the drive shaft, that will be either another shaft usually, and again, either smooth or splined, or the 'ears' of a half a U-joint.

In order to mate the cutter to the clutch to the drive shaft they must all be of the proper type. Given that all you are doing is swapping out the shaft itself, we'll leave out the gear box to clutch part since we already know it was mated and therefore the same.

Now, do you remember whether your slip clutch was joined to the drive shaft by a U-joint or shaft to socket?
