Your local bank's loan officers should have a farm equipment blue book. This book is much like the Kelly Blue Book, when dealing with new and used automobiles.

Your local bank won't mind if you inquire about a tractor or two, but if you're serious about shopping for a tractor, it might be best to invest in a farm equipment blue book of your own.

If you don't want to invest in the blue book, your next best option is to compare prices at tractorhouse.com, or ironsearch.com.

The blue book will give you much better pricing information. Armed with the REAL value of the tractor, you'll be in a much better position to wheel and deal on any used tractor.

The price is around 60 dollars for the annual farm guide, but armed with this information, you could save maybe a thousand dollars on your next tractor purchase.

I just stepped up from my 10 year old 4100 to a 2520. While the 2520 is only 30% more HP it is about 50% more machine. It handles every rear implement I own better both in terms of handling the weight and speeding up my jobs. While only a couple hundered pounds heavier I think most of that must be up front because it handles weight on the rear much better without having to add weights. Each year I rototill a one acre garden. While the 2520 uses 30% more fuel than my 4100 it finished the job in less than half the time. The rear tires are so much wider that the traction is way more than the 4100. I do not have a loader so can't comment on how that performs. The only warning I would give everyone is that there are some problems with tire inteference and the 3 point hitch - read the topic on this forum that talks about a 3 point hitch problem. I have also heard about interference problems with the front tires and the back hoe mounts. I don't have a hoe yet so can't verify that one. The tire interference problem was a show stopper for me in that I use this machine with a back blade to grade my driveway and plow snow. The JD back blade does not fit between my tires. I also need to use chains in the winter which were impossible to fit. After a lot of fighting I got JD to replace the draft arms on my machine. They have a fix for this problem. Also note that the new 2720 comes with draft arms identical to the new ones JD gave me to avoid that same problem on the 2720. Last but not least, sell your 4100 yourself. I put it on Craig's list and sold it in 3 weeks for several thousand more than trade in value. Hope this info helps.

Not a regular, just surfing but noticed this post. I've been through several of 3 point issues with my new 2008 2520 and my 62D MMM so I had to get on here and respond. Here's what I learned:
The 3 point draft arms each have two holes in them that can be used to connect the rock shaft lifting linkages to the draft arms. You have to have the lift linkages connected to the proper hole in each arm. One set of holes closest to the tractor will give you the most travel. Apparently some units get installed wrong. I read a JD DTAC report that explained this problem. The other set of holes will seriously limit both up and down travel. Check this first. According to the DTAC this is the cause of most problems with restricted implement vertical travel.
The other problem a lot of people are having with the 2520 3 point is draft arms hitting the R4 tires in full raised position with certain implements. This is such a prevalent problem that JD is replacing the draft arms with a new design that are bent so that they provide more tire clearance. I got this fix for free on my tractor. There is a DTAC report on this as well that describes the problem. JD does not have a formal recall replacement program yet but if you complain a lot you'll eventually get the new arms. I had this problem with all my JD implements and others say that there IMatch also will not fit unless they turn the pins inward. If you want tons of data on this go to tractorbynet.com and do a search on 2520. Read all posts about 3 point hitch or tire clearance problems. Lots of people are getting this fixed.
For anyone with 62D mower deck. There is a replacement program for the anti-scalp wheels. There has been so many problems with the front castors digging into sod that JD will replace all 4 wheels with a more rounded corner version and also provide instructions on how to install zerk fittings on the front castor wheels so they can be greased and thus spin correctly. The castor axis had no way to lubricate on earlier decks. I got these free parts and it drastically improved the ability of the wheels to do their job without digging in. The newer decks starting some time in 2007 already have these wheels and zerks. Thee is a DTAC for this also.
I spent many months figuring out what caused these problems for me and eventually got them all fixed by digging around on the internet. My dealer was no help in finding the fixes to these problems. I hope you all have better luck.

Well after 8 hrs ,I have a broken rear axle. I am having a hard time getting Valley Ventrac to get the parts ordered.I called early Mon. morning and as of 11:00 am Wed. nothing has been ordered.(I checked with the factory).I promptly called another dealer and got parts coming.I expect a dealer to go above and beyond to get parts to the customer,after a breakdown in less than 2 weeks.Thanks TnT Williamsburg.Ia for getting the parts coming. I am still happy with the tractor,but not with Valley Ventrac service. Eddie

I am in the process of doing my 50 hour service. The book says that the front axle takes 9 quarts. However, is the oil level only suppose to be up to the check plug or can it be higher? I put in 8 quarts and the oil is flowing out.

I never bothered with an arch because any log longer than 35 feet or so could never be maneuvered through the twisting trails we use. The trails could be straightened but we kind of like the twists and turns because it adds character to the trail as a walking trail.

Not sure on any of the numbers on our Gator but when we bought it the dealership very much suggested larger than the normal tires on it. Have no idea if the rims were the same or not as it was all changed before we got the gator. I will say sure am glad he made that recommendation. kt

Safety features are there for operators that have a brain cramp and forget a known procedure. Shut of PTO etc.

If you wan't some input on the 3030 check , Compact tractor.net,(some cab tip&noise complaints)the 7800 had the overall best ratings of the Kubota's & the other brands,but you can also wait on some input from Me,I have absolutely no intention of pampering mine!..In fact I'll let you test drive it,...If You let Me hunt your property!..

I got the same answer, the 485 is a 448 with updated mounting brackets for hoses so it can be used with a cab tractor.

I got the mechanical spec sheet and all the digging dimensions and such are identical from the 448 and 485.

I am looking for a tractor in the 40-50 pto hp range, and I need an SCD/Motor valve to drive a few implements. Does anyone know if JD offers this type of valve on tractors in this hp range? If JD doesn't, can you recommend a brand that does? Thanks.

It would seem a dealership and the company service tech would between the two know what is proper and what is not proper. You said you have 25 years experience as certified automotive mechanic so it would seem you would also know something in the mechanical world at same time you said the dealership (think it was the dealership) told you there were four with the same problem. Looked carefully at the wording you said was used: everything was to spec, that may not mean he did any kind of "road" test. It is possibly something tested proper on pressure or clearance or such and just does not work under load. If it would not start due to corroded battery terminals sure seems they did not run it to check or test anything.<br>

I would doubt another dealership would want to now look at the tractor. However if they would it might help.<br>

Try to track down the others and find out how their tractors are. If may be the four together have much better chance. I have a friend who considered suing a auto dealership and was told the only way her case stood a chance was to gather others into that had the same issue with the dealership to prove it was not just her. Hope you well. kt<br>

Does the dealership you purchased from sell any other brand? If so ask them on a trade and if they give any down side to your tractor ask them how that is possible since they and Mahrinda have both said it is to specs. Again ask, might be you need that recorded or a friend with you for the deal making conversation. <br>

Yes, that's the nature of a normal 2-cyl Yanmar.

Watch the gauge especially at startup, which is when a pressure problem is most likely, to see that the needle immediately starts climbing. Don't rev up or ask any work from the engine until it reaches normal, about 60 psi.

By all accounts the 955 is a pretty solid machine. I hope it wasn't stored outside in the burial ground for a lengthy period of time! My guess is it is too small to do any serious baling.

The Kioti 3054 clutch is identical to some Kubota models. Same clutch dia. etc. I had a customer who said kioti clutches were weak, so i set him up. I placed his old Kioti clutch pak next to an old Kubota clutch, and he couldn't tell the diff.

Depends upon which engine. Post the info you find on the engine plate (usually on the valve cover, sometimes on the side of the block)
