Buzzlight,

I've never tried putting heaters on my fuel lines, or in my fuel tanks......but they do make such things.

State highway trucks have heated fuel tanks and lines. It's not cheap to do. (they also use heaters on the air compressor drain lines.) However, you might get by with a magnetic heater stuck to the side of your fuel tank. They're designed for use on an oil pan, but they will work on diesel fuel tanks just as well.

Battery blankets are just too cumbersome to be used on the fuel lines, but heat tape might work. (The type used to keep water lines from freezing)

The real problem comes after you unplug these devices. If you plan to operate your machinery outdoors in these cold temps, it's best to have 12 volt DC heaters installed....but then you might find that you'll also need a larger alternator, and possibly a bigger battery. Small tractors just have the room inside the compartments for all of these additional equipment items.

I still like the Knipco heater the best. It warms up the entire tractor.....wheel bearings, transmission, differentials, hydraulic fluid, etc. But, again, it doesn't do me any good once I back out of the barn.

We live pretty close to each other. You're 200 miles northeast of here. It's been a fairly nice winter so far. Nothing in the -40 range YET! hehehe.

Frank covered things pretty well. I would only add that if you have any crop residue remaining from the previous season's crops, that you leave it on top, if at all possible. Don't work it under. Use "no till" practices in dry years.

The most important thing is that you get your seed down into the moist soil. 2" is the normal planting depth for corn seed, but if you have to go down to 2-1/2" to find moisture, be sure to do so. (Straight from my own county agent)

Murf, as to the higher cost of the water compared to soft drink, I think that is to a big part related to shipping. The water is often not bottled locally as they try to keep the same taste and there is no flavors added to it so you taste the water only. Where as the soft drinks have so many different items added that affect the flavor or covers up the water's true taste they bottle that locally. Years ago I traveled to Wilmington NC often and here would drink Pepsi and there would drink Coke because it tasted more like our Pepsi than did their's due to the water used.

Now to fountain drinks and the water they use...wonder what kind of filter system the small stores use? kt

I looked at the tools needed to take them apart and it looked like this type of connection is best used where you have good access to fiddle with it. I wonder how the plastic parts hold up as well.

The only problem with the shark bite fittings is that they are expensive. Make sure that they give you the little shark bite release tool so you can take the fitting off if you mess up.

With copper prices going through the roof you are going to see alot more PEX used.

Don't the road tractors and cars run in the temp. The dye I thought was to keep farmers from useing diesel that was tax exempt for tax on farm uses. You might want to get an additive to keep it from gelling. When I drove on the road we used it because all terminals might not add it.

Bvinduck; I did forget to mention that in the info from the Deere website on 48 hoes that the subframe for your series tractors is called a "Weldement". to me that says that you get a kit which is welded up to an existing subframe for the smaller tractors. Your question about the subframe being in the way for other attachments; No not anything I have encontered would call for removing the subframe. When you mount the hoe on the tractor you must remeve the three point hitch lower arms and the upper three point link, a five minute job going on or off. Mounting the hoe after subframe installation just taking you time to be sure you do the steps in proper sequence is ten minutes tops with no lifting, the tractor three point upper arms do that for you. Mounting of the hoe it'self is pretty simple long as you have parked the hoe on a reasonably level surface. Hope this helps. Frank.

Don't buy a shibaura 2643 nor the Ford 1910, spares are very expensive if they are available. I would go for a Ford 4000 if I could afford it.
