As Mark mentioned, for my point of view the engineering and thought that went into this machine is absolutely top drawer stuff.

They have obviously had a real good look at the competition and what it's owners are saying about them before putting pen to paper (mouse to desk?) on this one.

Interestingly enough, if you look around the 'net a bit for opinions on this machine, several boards have little good to say about it, one in particular is really down on it. Although I don't share their opinion on tractor stuff either, so take it for what it's worth. ;)

IMHO it's not much different in looks from the competition.

Paul, thanks for the reply! One of the things I did try was spinning the rear wheels by hand with the rear end jacked up. They moved reasonably well with the transmission in neutral. Granted, I did NOT try to move them both at the same time however I DID note that, while I could spin them with the brake off, I could NOT spin them when I applied the brake. Still, it's an interesting thought. Although a stuck brake would not explain my low power steering pressure though. Worth a call to the dealer to have them investigate. Again, thanks!

Bob, first off, I'm glad to hear you are making progress.

Secondly though, be aware that the 'deck screws' are not going to be anywhere near as strong as the stainless steel ones you are replacing. IMHO the problem was the amount of expansion and contraction in the material, NOT the screws themselves. Any time we have used man-made lumber we installed it using fastening strips, these have elongated holes or slots in them and as the material expands and contracts the screws just slide back & forth in the slot. I suggest you look at something similar in your case.

My house isn't that big, I just have a dozen or so less people living there than it was designed for. :)

But hey, there's advantages, I can get away with having a ride-on vacuum, and when my good lady tells me to get lost, or go for a walk, I don't even have to go outside.

That and I can fly my radio-controlled stuff inside on crappy days. :)

Wow, It sure sounds like the dealer didn't prep this one very well. I don't like the sound of all those problems either, but all of that should have been taken care of when it was predelivered! Before you took delivery. As far as fit and finish, The 5X03 series are designed to be price fighter models to compete with some of the cheaper brands out there. I guess they cut some corners in the frills and cosmetics. Hopefully the mechanical problems were flukes of new model and lack of dealer prep.

So far Jack has been real good about staying in at least the new high tensile 5 wire fence I recently had put up. He is real good at finding holes in the old falling apart cross fencing.

Greg, I moved about 3 years ago and now we are about 100 miles south of Nashville.

The temps were in the 14 degree range this morning but Jack seemed like he was not bothered by the cold. He has about 6 inches of matted wool on his body and about 2 inches on his neck. The horse got the turn out blankets and neck coats so they stayed nice and toasty warm.

Jack and the horses are still working on establishing who is the "pasture boss" but so far it seems like Jack is the "boss man". ;-)

It's a pretty specialized thing, and not (relatively speaking) of interest to too many people.

Although some of the equipment is compact but not all by any means, most of it is way beyond full-sized in the price department.

Generally speaking, compact sized equipment on a golf course exists ONLY because of one critical factor, weight, or more particularly COMPACTION. The bigger the machine, the more soil compaction will result from running it around on a course.

The big difference is scale, the average person has a few acres of grass to maintain, and usually none of it of the caliber a golf course needs to be.

An average golf course is 150-200 acres in total site size, of which about 3 acres are tees, and another 3 is greens, 32 are fairways, 67 are roughs. If there is a practice green it is generally about a 1/4 acre in size, and if there's a driving range it is another 7-10 acres in size.

Maybe just a Turf Care board could be used, but any time a question of turf care has come up that I recall it was on the General Board.

blacksmith, too many years back to be 100% sure but if memory is correct my father in law's old Ford had an adjustment screw to adjust for worn gears in the steering gear box. It was located at base of steering column.

I would following on Joel's suggestion and have some one work the steering wheel back and forth with the tractor sitting still while you look for the point where the linkage goes from quick response to sloppy response. kt

Thank you for responding.

We now know that your solenoid and starter are both working. The problem seems to be in a relay between your ignition switch and the 12vdc control wire.

The click you hear in the dash is probably a low voltage relay that controls the power to your glow plugs, and possibly the power to your starter solenoid.

If you have a wiring schematic for your tractor, you can follow the 12vdc wire from the solenoid back to the ignition switch. Something in that circuit is not closing......not making contact when you turn the ignition switch to Start.

More than likely, the culprit is a simple low voltage relay.

Take a look behind the dash. You should be able to figure out where the power to the solenoid should be coming from.

of spool-type and poppet-type valves.

Still on the topic of leakage, today I'm going to
explain the potential pitfalls when measuring
case leakage from a hydrostatic transmission.

A hydrostatic transmission consists of a
variable-displacement pump and a fixed or
variable displacement motor, operating together
in a closed circuit.

In a closed circuit, fluid from the motor outlet
flows directly to the pump inlet, without returning
to the tank.

Because the pump and motor leak internally, which allows
fluid to escape from the loop and drain back to the tank,
a fixed-displacement pump called a charge pump is used to
ensure that the loop remains full of fluid during normal
operation.
