Well, here is the latest update on the backhoe quest.

I sat in on the Proxy auction Saturday and the two excavators I was interested in went for what I believe was about 2-3k below retail, same guy bought both. My own fault I missed them as I had not done enough prep work in advance.

Since then, however, I have come across two backhoes for sale locally. One is a private owner and the other is a dealer. I looked at the Case 480E yesterday and am looking at the 580LT tomorrow. The price is so good on the new dealer trade that I signed an offer with the salesman today (he met me on the road) with an inspection clause so I can decline if I choose to do so.

I have seen pictures of the 580 and it looks good but we shall see. It is 4WD with "extend a hoe", full enclosure, remote hydraulics and a heater (yesssss).

Keeping my fingers crossed ;)

I put a set of Western Snow Plow shoes on my rear blade and that works fine. Glad I don't need to use just the rear blade any longer, one winter was enough of that with the old AC D12.

I tried to post a picture of mine but for some reason I can not make that feature work :(

I have the three point blower with hydraulic chute, a cab and a heater. Only issue with it is when the ground is soft you need to use the bucket instead :)

i need an 8" clutch and pressure plate for a 2304, 13 splined clutch, i would even be interested in a used pressure plate only, if anyone has a source please let me know thanks

Just purchased an L2550. It works, but can't change gears. I pulled some tin on the right side, and can see the mechanism on the steering yoke. There is a separation between a square pin and it's slot. Looks like someone tried to force it to shift and wrecked it? Is this a common problem? Anyone have any suggestions to repair? I'm going to have to look fo a parts diagram? I tried to loosen the 10mm that holds the square drive and move it, but the whole assembly moves even with the bolt loosened as there is a round pin that slides up and down for the 1,2--3,4 selection. Thanks in advance.<br>

The seals and bearings need to be replaced. Perhaps the shims also if the old ones are too warn.

James, you hit on an interesting point just now.

I had a similar (but with a completely unrelated product) situation a number of years back, a product failed three times, the manufacturer cheerfully fixed the first time under warranty, the second did so also, but only after much prodding, then the third time, outside of warranty, flat out refused to do anything about it, period.

After much pushing, including a letter from my lawyer, the manufacturers rep. agreed to meet with me at the dealers. When I stated it was a defect, and clearly covered by warranty, it was their problem, the rep. argued it was not and demanded to see the maintenance records claiming it had never been a defect, but a lack of maintenance, the bolts were supposed to be re-torqued twice after installation to prevent slack caused by use after installation.

At that point I pulled out the owner's manual and asked him to point out to me the section that said the torque had to be checked. He pulled out the INSTALLATION MANUAL and showed it to me.

I laughed, and turned to the dealer, and said "So it's NOT WARRANTY, but YOU are PAYING not me!!"

The dealer had done the installation, but left me the installation manual.

I cannot be guilty of not doing something when I didn't know had to be done..........

The dealer did indeed pay, and then made a point of handing me the inst. manual and making sure it came back twice to have the mounting bolts checked and re-torqued also.

I thought about the lever being disconnected too, but Mike's statement "The lever moves from 2WD to 4WD positions with some difficulty but the tractor remains in 4WD." seems to negate that possibility. If the lever was disconnected it would move easier even than usual.

IMHO, the only thing that would result in both the lever being difficult to move, and the lack of disengagement is a fork problem. Especially if it was stuck and the lever got pushed a little too hard trying to get it to move.

I asked my maintenance man out in the shop, his answer was "Tighter than leaking, looser than a mashed washer.".

So there you have it, the voice of experience......

Thank you for your help. It does not have a fuse box of any kind but I did find a broken fuse in line in the wireing harness off the key. I replaced it and it fixed the problem. The inline fuse had each end exposed and could easily short out. Thanks again. D Kenney

I have noticed lately that the temp gauge on my BX never registers above the minimum level even when I have been working it fairly heavily on a warm day. Is that usual for this model?<br>
The gauge is your typical analog display with a needle that goes from low to high, but the needle never goes above low and appears that it never gets off the peg. Do I have a faulty gauge or do these models just run "cool" and rarely register in the "normal" range?<br>

Thanks for the info. I need to look at the Raynor prices for overhead doors. I like that barn look, so will see what can be done. I would like an area to play basketball, and the overhead door would hurt that idea. I was going to eliminate a truss in one of the 8' bays to create a vaulted area as wide as the barn, and 16' long, at one end, for basketball. I could always put the overhead door on the side of the barn, and then see about how to design the front (gable) to make it look "barn-like". The other issue is whether I should put concrete slab in right away, or wait a year for the fill to settle.

The theory behind the alt being bad and disconnecting it is that there is enough residual power before the battery was disconnected (becuase the alt was already turning) that it keeps making enough power to power the ignition. Hopefully I haven't got my proverbial wires crossed on this one.

Please feel free to correct me on this one! Uh-oh I can see it now!
