Mystery solved. Got the alternator back from the shop today. ($50 vs $281 for a new one.) Reinstalled it and it works fine.

Well I decided against this whole idea. I think it will be so large to be done right that it will be tough to tow with my Jeep and be an eye sore which is just what I was trying to avoid.

It turns out I think it will fit nicely in my boat house. The boat house was built in 1906 and is not used as boat house because it was built for a 1906 boat (like 3 ft beam). I've been using it as a shed. I had already filled in the floor. I'll have to beef up the floor a bit for the tractor. Should be fun working on my back in a foot of cold water this weekend.

"If" that is the problem, yes it will go away. I run the recommended dosage of Power Service (the white bottle) in all my diesels all the time, it makes a noticeable difference.<br>

If it is contaminated fuel, and it has gotten as far as the injectors, you will have to clean the whole system out. Water in particular will not just get flushed out from running the engine.<br>

You didn't say if the knock went away or it was there for the 2 hours you ran it?<br>

I don't know that specific lever configuration, but 2wd/4wd lever selection is not an unfamiliar subject with me. Have you actually removed the housing cover to see what's happening underneath? In my experience, that's the very FIRST place to start.<br>

I guess it is possible there is no fuse panel but hard to believe. If no fuse panel there must be some place where the power leads would split off. Track your postive battery cable. It probably will lead to starter relay but that should lead you to fuse panel.

Pull out your truck owner's manual, look up fuse location, and then go to the passenger side footwell. The fusebox is behind a panel forward of the door opening. Pull that off, and then pull the fuse box cover. I can almost guarantee that you have a blown fuse. I have that problem on occasion with my 2006 f-150 and it usually happens when I plug the trailer in with the lights on the truck turned on.

I don't know if they're common elsewhere, but up here we have a bottom track system that is great for dealing with snow and ice in regards to sliding doors.

It is sort of like a piece of eaves trough that that mounts to the bottom of the wall, except the opening is lined down both sides with a sort of strip of bristles like a long thin broom head. The two strips, one front and one on back meet in the middle in a sort of peak roof style, when the door is opened the bristles hold the door from flapping in the wind, and when the door is closed the bristles form a sort of roof to keep a space open for the door to open into.

They work quite well at keeping the door functioning in winter.

If clearance is an issue you may want to look at overhead bifold door mechanisms, or if you are a little handy they're quite simple to make yourself.

Try Unverferth Manufacturing in Kalida, Ohio. They are the OEM for many tractors, equipment and implements. You'll need to have a buddy (or befriend a new buddy) who works/owns a shop order from them though as they sell only wholesale.

We are planning on replacing our Ford 850 to get:<br>
Live PTO (allows better snow blower, brush hog, roto-tiller operation)<br>
4x4 allows better operation with deep snow removal<br>
Power steering (to make it less of a chore to operate).<br>

We are looking at a Satoh Stallion (35hp, 4x4, loader, etc) as an economical option which seems to fit the needs.<br>

Our main deterrant in buying the Satoh is that it is a 24 year old tractor. Only a few scattered dealers seem to deal in Satoh/Mitsubishi parts and even those make the parts availability look pretty slim for the Stallions (based on their web sites).<br>
<br>
The big American names (Ford, JD, etc) make owning their aging machines less risky because of good parts availability.<br>
<br>
I assume that the typical consumables (filters, clutch, brakes, etc) are still available.<br>
<br>
But are major components available? Like:<br>
PTO output shafts.<br>
Front/rear axle parts.<br>
New pressure plates.<br>
Transmission parts.<br>
etc<br>
<br>
The Stallion has an Isuzu Diesel engine.<br>
Can I expect to find rebuild kits, injection system parts, pistons, etc for it?<br>
<br>
Were there enough Satoh tractors sold in the US to supply a used parts market, and enough still in service to support the aftermarket parts business for many years into the future?<br>

Is there a bona-fide Satoh/Mitsubishi parts supplier in the US that really can get most of the parts for their older tractors (possibly from Japan)?<br>

Are Satoh Stallions respectable enough tractors to make the need to worry about major repairs a small worry?<br>

I think you are right.

But as to my interest in the knowledge that this forum has to offer, in abundance!........,is , hst vs shuttle can some one frame the practical convenience of the shuttle and that of the hst, from service, to, maintenance ,to power, given the pump drain..........on the bucket ....... vs speed or have all of you guys already given this in hints.... ?

The whole idea behind scheduling a rebuild, at a specified number of hours, is to prevent any serious damage from occurring, which would then require an engine replacement.

If an engine is overhauled prior to noticing any serious damage, it's most likely not going to need much more than bearings and rings......along with a valve job.

Diesel engines might last far longer than 5000 hours, but if a bearing spins, or a rod breaks, rebuilding it may no longer be possible.

Should be a one time repair. use locktite and good lock washers, make sure the bolts are long enough...usually are when the flat washers (if present) are removed.

james; I just came in from crawling under the 4310 looking at how the subframe is attached, then got out my service manual and did more checking. If I understand you correctly the final drive housings you break are on the left hand side of the tractor, looking at the tractor from behind. There are 8 cap screws 6 long and 2 short ones plus two alignment pins holding the housing to the transmission case. Standing beside the tractor facing the left rear wheel the backhoe subframe is held on by four of the long cap screws at the eleven, one, three, and five o'clock positions, correct? As I understand you the capscrews in those four positions break leaving a chunk of the housing still attached to the transmission case by one long and one short cap screw at the bottom. The four capscrews that hold the subframe on should hae been longer bolts furnished with the subframe, were the proper bolts used, correct hardness, etc. The assembly instructions also state that loctite must be used on the threads when bolting the housing to the transmission case, was it used? I'm now quite suspicious that either the wrong bolts were used, not properly tourqued, no loctite, etc. You also mention that the same dealership has had several incidents of the same problem as yours, did the same tech. do all the subrame instalations that failed? With probably less than a one in ten thousand failure rate, how many of this model backhoe did the dealrship sell? I doubt the even the biggest of dealerships have sold more than a half dozen of the #48's on a 4000 series tractor, that is a horendeous failure rate for one dealership. Something is definitely fishy here with the proper assembly of these failed units. Don't give up, get to the "Head Shed" at Deere, there is a way right on their website to get there, I've been there done that, you will get results with a legitimite complaint. Tell them what's going on in a business man like manner and you will be surprised at the results you will get. Frank.

Joel, unless I'm way off on my math, a load of 150 gallons of fuel shouldn't have been enough to damage the S-10. 900 pounds plus the container weight (300?) isn't too much weight, unless the guy was jumping terraces with the truck or something like that. You're right though, the operator can make all the difference in the world, which is why I never loan my tractor.

Being in the country more we only sell a couple Wrights a year. The products do hold up well as we don't see them in the shops for much if anything but the simplist of maintence.
