Let's put the shoe on the other foot for a minute here.

The little cafe, on Main Street, is just as dependent on the farm income as my family is. But, when winter comes to North Dakota, our farmers head south to Yuma, Phoenix, Key West, etc.

Without their government CRP payments, they wouldn't be able to afford these long winter vacations.

And while they are gone, that little cafe on Main Street closes their doors......for lack of business.

The government subsidy payments have killed the small towns in this country, along with the businesses that once operated in them.

When a farmer retires, he should be forced to do what every other business owner does.......sell his assets and use that money for his retirement. Instead, only the farmer can lease his land to the Federal Government and live off of the taxpayers.

I find it rather amazing that a farmer can finance his retirement on the backs of the taxpayer. NO OTHER person in this country can do that.

I am using the loader and a blade I have on the back to grade our roads. The blade is not very heavy and the tractor will get hot while only using the blade. Most of the time I do haul road base with the loader and smooth it out with the blade. After the tractor gets hot it looses it power. I do not use it for mowing. The clutch seems to be ok while just moving around. If I am not very careful the tractor will die very easily while I am trying to pickup a load of base. I can not push it very hard.

I'm with Harvey, get a reliable lawn service. There are lots of people out there doing that sort of thing. Ask your neighbors who they use. You get better rates if a service is doing other jobs within a few blocks of yours.

They will also mow every week or as you require but best is to be on the same schedule as your neighbors. You can't always rely on a teenager to be there when you want. If you want to stick with a non professional, go with a semi-retired individual.

The same guys will more than likely do snow as well.

A yard that size should normally go for $25.00-$35.00 per mowing.

You might try going to a auto parts store they have oversize plugs just for that. They make new threads as you put them in. Real easy. Lee

You will definitely need the operators manual for this mower to install it. It covers the installation process well and it is not that bad after you have done it a few times. Do you have the lift linkages and hyd. lift cylinder for the mower? You can look up the parts diagrams on the jdparts website under mower model 2667.

Thanks for the information. I'm still considering whether or not I want to make the trip. Not sure I want to go that far for a tractor.

Still, I'd like to see it. I figure it might be around until next Spring.....if I'm lucky.

I have a daughter who's expecting her first child in Feb. She lives in southern Minnesota. Maybe I can schedule a trip sometime after the snow melts, in May, to see the new grandbaby, my daughter, and the Ford 2000. From here to Monroe, MI, according to Google Maps, it's more than 1100 miles, one way.

If you get some pictures posted, please let me know.

im sorry youre having this problem,this has been a real pain for me.dealer charged $822.00 to fix this and i still dont know exactly what they did .this is a great tractor but has way too much electronics.theres basically nothing you can do except send it to dealer and hold your breath.i love my tractor but am growing tired of these damn little quirks

Bobbyb4,

Follow the fluid changing procedures in your tractor's manual. Replace ALL of the filters, screens, and fluid.

Run the tractor normally for a few hours, and then change the filters again. The fluid will not have to be changed a second time.

of every hydraulic system - the oil:

1. Don't change the oil - filter it.

Water or particle contamination rarely necessitates an oil change - unless the contamination has resulted in additive depletion or base oil degradation. These contaminants can be removed from hydraulic fluid by filtration.

2. Eliminate particle contamination to reduce breakdowns...

Research has shown that maintaining fluid cleanliness at ISO 4406 16/14/11 will result in a tenfold increase in the average time between breakdowns when compared with a fluid cleanliness level of 24/22/19. This is based on the findings of a three-year study of 117 mobile and industrial hydraulic machines to determine the
correlation between fluid cleanliness and breakdown frequency.

3. ...And extend fluid life.

Particle contamination reduces the service life of hydraulic oil by stripping additives and promoting oxidation. Additives attach to particles, which are then removed by the filters or settle to the bottom of the reservoir. Wear metal caused by particle abrasion is a catalyst for fluid oxidation.

4. Keep it cool.

Elevated operating temperatures increase the rate at which the oil oxidizes and this decreases its service life. By-products of the oil oxidation process - varnish and sludge, can cause reliability issues such as valve spool stiction and filter clogging.

I'm willing to bet that the cylinder furthest from the oil pump was the culprit.

I try so hard to teach my children to allow their vehicles to warm up properly before driving them, and to NEVER rev up any engine after first starting it.

Even if the engine is warm, the drive train is still frozen solid. The first mile or so should be driven at very slow speeds....especially at temps around -40.

Cold weather will kill a machine faster than most people would believe.

I cringe when my kids tell me that they need to go to town when the temps are in the -30 to -40 range. If a vehicle doesn't have to be started in these temps, don't do it. It's akin to committing murder, I tell ya.

What did the dealer find on your fwd/rev problem? Did the pto problem start when you got it back? If so it seems they should fix. But first things first, there is probably an operator presence safety switch under the seat that causes the pto to not operate when the driver is out of the seat. Check the wiring to this switch and maybe jumper across it to rule it out as the problem.

$50 per hour is very reasonable (and defensible for depreciation costs) Its a rough wag I use for my business - though you could justifiably charge $60-65 per hour.

I figure my cost based on hours and years of service before replacement is req'd. We have a rental place just up the road with that size machine - I'll see what he charges.....

My uncle put me to work building a permanent fence, back in 1976. We finally finished it in 1979, just before I left for the Army. It's still standing, and it looks as good as the day we finished it.

If you have Google Earth, here's directions to the farm I grew up on, and the fence we built. You can see it in the satellite photo.

Type in Glenburn, North Dakota. Go south 1/2 mile to Glenburn Road. Travel east 2-1/2 miles, to 21st Ave. Northwest. The farm is located on the south side of Glenburn Road, and immediately to the east of 21st Ave.

Now there's a fence!

Posts are set 8 feet apart, and are made of 4" steel pipe.

The Top Rail is made of 2-1/2" pipe, welded into saddles cut into the top of each vertical post. The saddle ears were then heated with a torch and hammered over to cover the top rail.

There are four smaller rungs, each made of steel oil-well sucker-rod, 7/8" in diameter.

Each sucker-rod is run through three pipes, joined in the middle, and welded on the outside of both sides of each vertical post.

There are a total of 9 welds on each post. There are 8 holes burned into each post, as well as a saddle cut into the top of each vertical post. All of this was done with a jig that we moved from post to post as we cut the holes and the saddle.

The fence is over 5 feet high, and each post was set into the ground using a surveying instrument to locate them. Every post is set in a perfect line with the others. All vertical posts are sunk in concrete. They are EXACTLY 8 feet apart, as the sucker rod is 24 feet long, and must join exactly in the middle of every third post.

The corners are made at 45 degree angles, and are 24 feet long.

The entire fence was then painted white, by hand.....by Guess Who? hehehe. Well, OK, my brother did about half of the work. He painted on one side of the fence, as I painted on the other. Total length is about 1 mile....maybe a bit longer.

Ihookum, it is hard for me to tell you what is the best off my cuff other then those we see with the most hours before rebuild. Then it's a matter of if the metal left is strong enough to be worth rebuilding. Today many of the engines are reman or factory reconditioned as the days of it being cost effective in the normal shop to rebuild is cost prohibitive.

I know where the price of milk is and it was less then 18 months ago that it wasn't even 18 dollars per hundred weight but about 12 dollars!!! How would the rest of the people be able to live with that kind of a fluctuation in their pay!!!! The next part is even harder, who would work for seven days a week and be available 24 hours!!!!

Kenny, if you're thinking of using that for your ditch mower you might want to rethink it--in my opinion. A properly made cutter can weigh 2,000-3,000 lb. That's a lot of weight hanging off the end of the boom, and it could be very tippy---if it will pick it up at all. Even a 10,000 lb machine might tip. And that's especially bad if you're driving on the shoulder already at an angle.

Also, it sounds like you're going to be "driving" this around a lot?? These machines are not designed and built to driven like a backhoe, so expect rapid wear if you will be mainly on pavement.

And if you're looking to use this for the pond and stumps you might be disappointed when it comes to not so much digging but loading them in a trailer.

I still think at a minimum a 10,000 lb. machine is what you need (actually they're rated just a few pounds under 10K so they are "legal" without needing a heavier-rated trailer). And remember too that if you install a thumb the weight of the thumb has to be deducted from the lifting rating too with the bucket.

One last thought---whatever you buy be sure it has a backfill blade. They are not only good for stability like a downrigger but good for grading/backfilling like a minidozer. (I've used the much larger Kobelco excavators with a 6-way blade and they are truly like a dozer) And when the blade is fully up you can grasp larger loads between it and the bucket such stumps and brush and transport them long distances versus using just a thumb. The blade can also be used to level the machine on an embankment too.

Chitlins is somethin real good like.

Rather than stuffing the pig intestines with sausage, as most folks do.........

they simply turns 'em inside out, scrapes 'em off real good, roll them them in flour, and then deep fries 'em in peanut oil. After they's fried up real good, they take 'em out of the fryer and puts 'em in brown paper sacks. In about 10 seconds, that oil saturates the paper bag, making it see-through, like that fancy Macy's lingerie stuff them girlies wear in the big cities.

In Georgia, we used that sheer lingerie for holdn' catfish bait on the hook. If you need a recipe for catfish bait, give me a holler. Catfish like the stinkiest stuff man ever invented, cept them thar chitlins. Even Catfish won't eats chitlins. Catfish is a whole lot more smarter than people.

Usually I use the tractor sprayer to spray the roof while standing on a 36 foot extension ladder. But the ladder won't reach up by the chimney so the roof is moss-free except for that area. Time to nuke it :)
