my 4310 has been in the dealership for a week,they have had the computer hooked to it directly to tech service ,still no answers but they say it is computer related,hope to know soon

I am thinking of getting a tractor. Here is a description of some jobs I do manually now, plus future jobs I envision with the right gear. Maybe you folks could both suggest a suitable tractor size, and suitable or alternative methods of work.<br>

I think 30 to 35HP, 2500 to 3000 pounds, 4WD, geared transmission is about right, but I will defer to you experts.<br>

I collect firewood on my property. I use about 15 face cords per annum. I figure I work about an 8 hour day per face cord by the time I fell the tree, buck it where it falls, use my hand cart to do the 100 or 200 feet to the nearest road access for my F150, load four cart�s worth in the pickup, truck it up to my staging area, rough split with wedges and/or maul, stack in drying piles, (months later) load hand cart and stack behind the house, finish split and load into the house. I figure with a tractor I could load up the bucket and dump in to the F150, saving the hand cart work, or possible move the wood in the bucket to the piles for direct stacking if the material is small enough to not need rough splitting. Or I could skid out the trees to the staging area, but I like to do this work in the winter because it is a slower season and it is nice to buck without worrying about hitting the ground or having a dirty log. I can also see given enough time making a skid system such that the tractor can pick up loads from the drying stacks and move them into the wood shed without need to load (either tractor bucket or push cart or truck) and stack again.<br>

I wonder what firewood techniques others might suggest given a tractor and a pickup truck?<br>

You can also take from above that I don�t necessarily need the most time efficient machine, just the smallest lowest capital cost machine that will get the job done eventually. I don�t necessarily have a lot of work for a tractor, just more work than I can do manually. I seem to fall further and further behind every year. Though I hear that once you have a tractor, new uses make themselves known.<br>

I might be interested in doing some very small scale saw log skidding as I woodwork and have about 20 acres of hard maple. I can�t see using more than about 1000BF per annum. Plus it might be nice to square off the small red pines for quick and dirty small building construction material.<br>

I do some small agricultural stuff for personal use and a bit of sharing with friends. I have about 4 acres of field which is of very poor caliber, pretty much sand, and about 2000 square feet of garden plot. I have not done much with the field yet other than have a pigs dig up 100 square feet at a time in a movable pen or �pig tractor�. This idea is failing as without irrigation, I can�t plant a cover crop after the pigs do their thing. Plus there are plenty of stones turned up that I have to haul away with the wheelbarrow. Then it takes me an hour to smooth over the areas with a shovel and rake as the pigs tend to level it, but the field slopes about 1 in 20. Also the pen is not very movable given the field slope. The 2WD F150 won�t pull it up hill, and I can�t manually move it uphill either. <br>

I�d like to get the area fenced in as the deer would decimate any crops. Then I�d like to grow some crops to feed the pigs, and expand the garden area. So I envision using temporary electric fences to rotate the pigs and crops inside the perimeter fencing that would define the 4 acre area. I would like the tractor to help with stone removal, plowing, discing, leveling etc, but not necessarily planting or harvesting. I have a walking seeder that would work well enough on large seed crops like corn for the small area that I would do in any year. Though I might at some point mow alfalfa and similar for winter usage, I don�t ever envision keeping more than one sow and a few smaller animals through the winter. Anything bigger scale than that, I�d buy in the food I think. The pigs would self harvest their share and I would manually harvest the people food.<br>

Just a bit more about fencing. I want to put cedar posts on 50 foot centers with 3 steel posts in between, though I would consider all cedar if the auger worked well enough. So the immediate requirement would be for about 50 post holes. Problem is, from the dozen holes I dug manually, 2 out of 3 holes would dig up a 4 inch or larger (8 to 10 inch) rock. These holes took 2 or 3 hours, the sand (not many of these) holes 15 minutes. Is an auger going to dig the nasty holes effectively, or am I going to end up doing a lot of this manually with my big steel pry bar anyhow?<br>

I have zero need for mowing as the amount of grass I have can be done < 2 hours with a push reel mower.<br>

A backhoe looks interesting as I have a 1000 SF barn that needs the foundation replaced, and my wood shed needs its retaining walls rebuilt. Don�t know if these projects would be too small scale to justify the cost of the backhoe. I also see trenching for irrigation piping, maybe 800 feet or so, and the odd buried electrical cable.<br>

I shovel the snow manually to a length of 3 vehicles off the road and then haul groceries etc. between the car and the house with a utility sleigh.. If I had a tractor, I might be tempted to maintain the whole semi-circular driveway of 300 or so feet in the winter. But I might not too. Shoveling by hand that much snow can take the place of a gym membership.<br>

I am trying to establish an orchard, so the tractor could help there also with things like moving the mulch away from the trunks in the fall, and adding new mulch throughout the growing season, and maybe with harvesting.<br>

I don�t envision much loader work that involves shuttling back and forth. The loader would be used more for moving things like harvested stones and bucked firewood. I think I would be a good candidate for a geared transmission over hydrostatic, but I am open to persuasion either way.<br>

I can see using a scraper to maintain the bush roads.<br>

I want to build some stone walls.<br>

I want my tractor to fit into an 8x12 foot building. Anything bigger needs a building permit and drawings, so it would take longer to do the paperwork than to build the structure. Yes ... I live in Ontario. If the attachments need a second or third 8x12, that is fine. If it would really need a larger building, I would purchase a kit garage which would presumably come with drawings. <br>

A big concern I have is service. I own no way of moving a tractor long distances and the closest dealership of any brand would be about 100 miles. My F150 is unlicensed so never leaves the property. I have no desire to pay to keep a truck on the road. So it would either cost me $500+ to rent someone to transport, or it had better not break down too often, or I better learn to fix it myself. I do have a truck mechanic buddy up the road, but frankly he is a busy guy, so I wouldn�t want to depend on him. I have no idea whether this suggests old technology say 8N up to 70s vintage which are presumably dead simple, or taking tender loving care of a newer modern tractor.<br>

As for cost, I�d rather not spend $30,000, but I can certainly do so if that much money buys me 35 years worth of tractor whereupon, being 80 years old, the race is on to see if I or the tractor dies first.<br>

I have some physical issues that might rule in or out certain tractors. I am 6'3" tall with size 15 feet.<br>

I'd only recommend the largest available for the tractor's mentioned. Industrial tires will also need the widest blowers available. The price difference is nominal and for keeping driveways clean on a daily basis and occasional blizzard you'd be fine. Two stage blowers were meant to be used for moviing old banks thats why the outer auger is made of heavier steel and they turn so slow. A good single stage in fresh fallen snow will work well otherwise. The mid PTO is available and dealer rates for for installation are all differnet. To have a two auger unit is not really a neccessity as normally the snow doesn't get that deep in a day. <br>

If you have a loader valve then that is a plus as you don't need to buy that with the snowblower. The L-series comes with hydraulic rotation and a cylinder to operate the spout is availale as an option.. On the B-series the electric is available for both positions.<br>

I don't like the units with the ful subframe and the rear drive coming from the rear PTO unless it is the option as it really cuts the ground clearence in the rear with the gear box so low behind the axle!!!!!!!

Be sure to disconnect any electrical ground connection such a wire cable or flexible wire strap between the generator and/or the engine and roll cage. And if the gen./eng. does not have rubber dampeners/isolators (which act as insulators) somehow disconnect that attachment.

I own a 98 magnatrac junior with about 20 hours of use. its a great machine for people that need to clean horse stables and get into tight places. The machine is very realizable and strong. I have it on craigslist.com for sale because I need a bigger tractor with robber tires for ease of transportation to pull a disc, mower etc.

You may have blown one or more of the diodes in the doide pack which are normally easily accessible from the end of the generator opposite the engine. They're usually behind a smallish access door. My Generac-brand pack ran me $35.

You might check out the MX-4 cutter at your JD dealer. My MX-5 has been abused beyond any reasonable use and it keeps coming back for more. You'll pay deere-ly for one but they are really well built.

Well, since we're throwing a little gasoline on the fire already.....

IMHO a union is no different than any other monopoly, including the goobermint itself, it has nothing to compete with, so there is no need to be competitive. Since it is a monopoly it also has little fear of obsolescence.

A number of years back a union organizer approached my workers on a large jobsite. They nearly laughed him back into his truck.

The foreman on that job, one of my longest serving employees, told him they already make more money than union scale wages and have no desire to fund a fat guy in a shiny truck driving around stirring up trouble!

The union tried to organize an 'information picket' on the jobsite, my employees went out to the entrance and told all the union workers about how much they got paid, and how well they get treated. The union guys went home, seems they were unemployed union workers who were instructed to show up or else.

A few asked if I was hiring before they left.

I also got black-listed when I bought the remains of a former (unionized) competitor of mine. I had been negotiating with the owner, but the union refused any concessions or to allow the company to de-unionize. I merely had the former owner bankrupt the company and bought everything from the trustee in bankruptcy, less the union.

I know this is an old thread. Unfortuantely this is an indication of a problem that we have seen on a few tractors with Yangdong engines. You may find that the bolts that bolt the front (engine) half of the bell housing to the engine are loose. This allows the engineand bellhousing (which contains the rear seal) to separate at the bottom, if you can get teh blade of a pocket knife betweent he engine and bellhousing, you have this condition. To get to the bolts you have to split the tractor, remove the clutch and flywheel. We have sold dozens of these engines and only had 2 or 3 of these in our shop with this condition. Seems to be on older tractors. What year is your NT254 made?

In areas with lots of snow and wind combined, you will the State Dept. put fencing along a highway that is angled away from the wind so as the wind blows over the angled fence it creates more drag as mentioned earlier, to cause more effective drifting. The fence is about 7 feet high (in an upright position) with flat boards about 6-8 inches wide and then it is laid over about 30 degrees ending up about 5 feet high.

For a residential area, an angled fence may look a bit goofy, but effective.

SG, no ole son you missed my point.

Take one axle off the mobile home frame and move the second one to almost the very back. Then add some 55 gallon drums to the underside for floatation. When you need to get to the island, back the trailer into the pond, like a Bailey Bridge. When the back axle gets to the island, set the front down, block it in place and drive over it.

You say it's only 33' across, so a 40' frame will give you 3' on dry ground each end, anything more is just bonus.

When the mowing is done, hook it up and roll it back out.

A friend does this at his deer camp, they used to get vandalised every year by kids from nearby summer places that ride his land on their 4 wheelers. So he built a new place on a small island, the 'bridge' is on wheels and gets parked a couple of miles away next to the old place. Cold water is a great deterrent.

Ole Bill- where in Colorado are you? Because although cando is right about TSC, the closest one to Denver is in Nebraska. There is a farm store called Big R I believe. Greeley, Colo Springs. Murdochs might help you out- there on the edge of Littleton I think.

Leejohn is correct. I don't believe you'll have enough flow to operate a log splitter with your tractor.

A log splitter, with a 4 inch diameter cylinder, 24 inches long, requires 12-14 gallons per minute to operate efficiently.

With 12-14 gallons per minute, you'll be able to split a log and return to the start position in about 20 seconds. At only 6 gallons per minute, that time will double to 40 seconds.

I'm guessing that your tractor will only put out about 4 to 5 gallons per minute......which will increase your cycle time to over 1 minute. The cylinder on your splitter will seem like it's not even moving.

Before you spend the time and money on this project, I ask that you look into the flow rate from your tractor's hydraulic pump.

Now.....your tractor will easily handle the mower cylinder. You won't have any problem there. The log splitter is a different story. It will split wood, but you'll be able to drink a cup of coffee between logs.

This is the primary reason why small tractors don't have remote hydraulic ports installed on them from the factory. These little tractors simply don't have what it takes to do that type of work.

You do have another option, however. You can purchase a Prince PTO Pump, and then run your splitter off of your PTO powered pump. This will require that you build an oil reservoir on your splitter, which isn't a big deal. If you go this route, make sure you get the proper PTO pump for your tractor. You can match a Prince pump to your tractor by the horsepower rating of your PTO shaft, which is generally three to four less than your engine's horsepower.

The E224 (three digits) is a gray market tractor. Imported tractors, which are sold by U.S. dealers, have four digit model numbers.

Your tractor's manual is not available in English.

I don't have access to the manual right now to confirm this. But if your gear oil level is correct, that mechanism should get sufficient splash lubrication. Check the pivot for binding. Alternatively, the finger could have jumped out of the fork. Depending upon which side it jumped out on, it could be binding the fork on the rail.<br>

The rails themselves should have detentes; one for forward, one for reverse. It's typically a spring-pin-ball arrangement where spring pressure holds the ball in a rail detent. Sometimes the ball will drop behind the rail and jam it up.<br>
