A BX 23 should have the backhoe on it if not I'd be really leary of it. They are both good tractors and have performed well. We have over five hundred of them out with the highest hour one that I've seen over 3500 hours on it and still mowing strong.

Frank you are so true with what you say! I don't believe I see a lot of problems with this tractor but! Why is it so hard to start in between use? What type of storage is used as normally they could sit for a long time with no problems. What is the actual condition and is it really worth any more investment.

I've seen a lot of people, me included take on projects of restoration and find out that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to the pocket book. I find that some do it for the fact of having something unusual or unique. I know I sold a fellow a 4010 that was about the forth or fifth off the assembly line. He is a collector and he gave me good dollar for the tractor, about what it would cost if perfect any other serial number. He did rebuild it totally even though it just needed engine work and he made it look factory fresh with tires, paint and decals. No bargin at $77,000. invested thats for sure but he has one!

Thats about the most extreme that I've heard of but I didn't ask him about his other tractors, there are plenty of others that have still put double and triple the money into a tractor of it's worth being sentimenal or just carried away.

The other side is how much to get the job done and what it is worth to you.

North Dakota's record high temp and record low temp occurred within 5 months of each other, back in 1936

In February of 1936 the record low was -60 F.
In July of 1936 the all-time record high was +121 F.

That's a temperature swing of 181 degrees, in less than 6 months time.

Granted, in most years our temps don't get that hot, nor that cold. However, temps of +110 and -50 are not all that rare.

We carefully choose our oils and other lubricants, because one just never knows what the temps are going to be like before the next oil change comes due.

North Dakota's weather will test the extremes on nearly anything made.......and I can tell you from experience that most things fail to operate properly at -40 and below. If you've never heard a car scream back at you, try starting one in North Dakota, in January! The noises a car makes at -40 will scare a guy!

The 9N you're looking at is priced too high for my liking. (I know it's been restored.......but....) You should be able to find a perfectly good 9N for less than $2,000.

Several years ago, I purchased a 9N with the mower, loader, plow, cultivator, harrow, and cement mixer, for only $1000. I doubled my money less than a year later.

There are thousands of 8N and 9N tractors available at prices much lower than the one you're looking at. If you are planning to spend that much money on the 9N, I believe you'd be far better off finding yourself a used modern tractor, for about the same amount of money.

The 9N is a good tractor. It is one of the best of its type ever made. Nearly every farmer has owned one at one time or another. They are dependable machines, but they are very basic tractors with absolutely no modern safety features, and they can be hazardous to operate.

A fully restored 9N might be worth 6300 to a collector, but nobody else.

EW, I think who to blame is a lot of the problem.
A few years ago a couple fell asleep on a local Beach. Right in a truck path across the dunes with ruts to prove it, on the ocean side. They awoke as a pickup was above them on the way to the beach. No doubt scared them. They sued for the mental anguish as it was the drivers fault they fell asleep in a road where they could not be seen, even though the pickup did not touch or harm them in any physical manner. In that case the free loaders lost. The honest legal people won. It only cost them sleepless nights and a few thousand dollars. Now who's to blame?

There was a MF dealership here a few years ago. One of the owners shot either one or both of two guys breaking into his business. He lost his business in the law suit brought by the crooks. There was no doubt they were breaking in and no doubt he was only trying to protect his property.

but...I'm just saying...it's that kind of people and that kind of lawyer. If people with common sense do not serve on juries the court room will brankrupt honest people to reward those who don't take responibility for their actions.

I think I would be looking into the difference in cost of having a Kubota cab system installed on your current L3830 and selling your L3830 and buying a new L3940 cab tractor. Kubota makes a real nice cab tractor. John Deere does too but I just cannot get past Deere building a tractor with a cast aluminum gear case and final drives.

Chain saws, water pumps, limbers and the other attachmnents do make it nice for the rtv when using the proper system. It certainly isn't for everyone but it does add some versatility to the unit. I don't recommend just hyjacking the dump circuit but to spend the money for the entire system.

Our beloved Aria leaves us an ample supply of lovely "trail apples" in the pasture next to our house and yard. After the piles have sat out in the sun for a week or so and dried up, they can be easily and evenly spread out by dragging an old bed box spring or chain drag manure spreader around the pasture. I am sure you could do something similar but on a smaller scale for your "trail apple" project. Horse manure is not a very good fertilizer in so far as nitrogen content as compared to bag fertilizer. It's biggest benefit is that it adds nutrients as well as biomass of the soil and in so doing helps to create an excellent, less compactible soil bed which is very beneficial to the grass the following spring. The grass build up under the lawn mower deck is very similar only it has not been processed in the horses gut. If the flys become an issue; I would suggest spreading some Fly Preditors around your yard and areas near where the horses poop. Fly Preditors are a little spendy but they work really well when applied properly. You can do as Murf suggested and compost it down if you have the yard space and time which is probably the best method.

Art...What is your opinion...on John deere deck thickness and performance. Would a 10 gauge 62 drive over deck last just as long and perform just as good as a 72" 9 gauge deck and a 7 iron 7 gauge deck. I had someone on here answer one of my questions earlier as to 72inch decks. He said I would be unhappy without a 7 iron deck but it wasn't avail. for the 2520 deere tractor. Would anyone on here be dissappointed getting a new 2520 tractor with turf tires and with 62d drive over deck and a cx loader,to mainly mow once a week or so in ohio.

I have the gas version of the extended cab 2500HD. I'm most likely going to get the Diesel 4 door in the next year. Reason I'm going for the 4 door - it's a huge pain getting things in and out of the back seat when you're parked next to someone. I almost always have something in the back seat - so I deal with this a lot.

Just my 2 cents worth on the extended cab.

No on the post hole auger for either basically. The 154-185 series had a front blade available for them that was manual angle and raised off the center rock shaft.
They did have a front snowblower available for the 154-185 series but not any other attachments to speak of.

Billy, they are built well and with the 54" deck if that's enough for you then it would be fine. The 60" worked for some that didn't want to mow twin sticks full ahead!
Have you looked at the drive belt and the spindles! You can't beat it, no raised pulley, they pull on the bearing. The hydraulic lift is nice but the hydraulic pto clutch means less stress yet on that double wide belt getting the blades started. The old style deck is the way to go in this area. Customers that have had both perfered the older decks over pro series but I've heard good things about the new decks.

My best thoughts on gear to hydro and hydro to gear.

Pto, loader, direction change, hydro one size larger tractor then gear!

Deep tillage, plowing, ground engaging, hydro one tractor size smaller.

Way to move the largest possible load with out wheel spin, hydro.

Mine is simple; it reflects the color of my tractor. This is the only site that I use it...not too creative...seemingly not enough time to be creative, as the father of four. I grew up in the suburbs in NJ, but learned to appreciate the rural life during summer visits to my grandmother's farm, where I make my home now. It is a much different way of life for my children than what I knew as a child; but they appreciate the land and the tools that we use to take care of it, including the "blue" tractor.
