sesails; I'll have to agree with you that Bush Hog has a good reputation in the equipment field, they have been around a long time. And also I have to agree with Art, the Kubota backhoe was designed to be mounted on your tractor thru a subframe that spreads the load and the stresses a backhoe can produce so as not to damage the frame of your tractor. Three point hitches just weren't designed to handle the type of load that a backhoe can create. I have a model 48 Deere backhoe that mounts on my 4310 in basicly the same design manner as Kubota uses. I'm not dead positive, but I think that the Kubota subframe like the Deere subframe stays on the tractor while the backhoe is off. Mounting is pretty simple long as the tractor and the backhoe are on a pretty level surface, a cement floor works great. Enjoy your machines. Frank.

No offense taken! A dealer does make a differnce! I do get to here that often enough and with your past farming experience you must be able to appreciate it when you need your equipment working at it's peak. How are they doing with your power, they say it's headed this way.

I made a middle buster of sorts with a furrower welded to one of the scarifier teeth on my box blade. It was for running shallow sprinkler lines. It didn't work. The wings have to be higher and much wider than the trench to be effective otherwise the spoils go over the top or around and back into the trench. Looking back, if I had a single-bottom plow and going each direction that proably would have left a cleaner trench an less hassle and no worries about getting it right in the trench each time.

I have also used pallet forks set next to each other on the skid steer to make trenches for running corrugated plastic drain tile.

A few years ago I saw on the web a guy who made 3pt attachment that was pulled forward and consisted of a flat-bladed "chute" (think a piece of wide U-channel angled into the ground) that as the cutting edge engaged the ground the spoils were pushed up the "chute". To prevent the buildup of spoils falling over the back side and into the trench, the top of the chute was curved to one side dropping the spoils to one side. Supposedly it owrked well according to the inventor, but I quickly fabbed something up to try it and all it did was build up at the front end and fall over the sides.

Murf is going blow a nut when he reads the next entry, but I have used a backhoe with it's bucket set at the right depth and ran forward with it...ahem... like a plow (a rented NH 655 backhoe). I could make a 24" wide trench about 24" deep in two passes in compacted clay.

(Murf I've got my ears plugged so fire away, buddy---on second thought we tend to think alike ---scary I know--so you probably have tried it too.)

a service manual should list the pump presure for diagnostic purposes. For the price of the manual you will save on the price of the pump and then some!!

Guys, Look up Mircle of Swedish Bitters on Computer. I have been taking them for years now and swear by them, Wife finally got on band wagon and uses them regulary.

OK thanks guys - all positive comments, I'll check the compression. The air filter element is newish < 1yr of VERY light use. There is some use on slopes ±30° (cos it just fits along an embankment next to the road frontage) and the oil has never been over-filled. I will also tune the carb as it drifts a little each year and at the end of the season is always backfiring once you turn the engine off (pre-ignition?).

Yes I know what it does; it returns the pedal to center. I could have my engineering misplaced (for a lack of better terms), but I'm fairly confident that the part is either nitrogen-filled with equal pressure on both sides of the piston with oil between (maybe even a compression spring on either side), or, the geometry of the linkage is such that it causes the return-to-center by only having pressure on the extend stroke and oil inside.

Since you're in New York I assume you have snow. I agree with Hardwood. Power Service is the way to go. I would warm it up without draining everything (no garage? throw a non-flammable tarp over it and use a torpedo heater (safely) to thaw it--may not take more than a hour or two depending on temp. and degree of freeze. Then dump in Power Service and run it. Be sure to top off the tank too.

Be sure you don't have a build up of ice and/or snow clogging the fuel cap vents. Otherwise you'll get a vacuum lock inside the tank.

Lowafun; Yes she used to give me the business about the 4100, and does not like to talk about it. However, once I let her mow with it, she really liked it. Well she liked it so much, she mowed a 65 foot strip on a neighbor's grass cause she did not know where to stop. I plan to let her take a turn on the 4310 once I get used to it, and see if it hypnotizes her into liking it. I know the first snow that comes where she cannot get out of the neighborhood and I rescue her with the 4310, it will be ok then. Just like the 4100 was when we got 24 inches in two days, and she could not get out of the garage!

These engines have been known to throw a pushrod out from under a rocker arm once in a while. Seems to be more common when cold, I'm not sure if it is because a valve sticks a little or if the valves are just not adjusted well from the beginning. I have not had it happen twice tot the same engine, but have had it happen on a couple different engines. so pull the valve cover and see whats up. If thats not it you can do a valve adjustment anyway while you are there.

JD 4100 in the blue book for 2006 with a hydro is 6300 for high and 5250 for a low. The going retail is 8200 for the tractor only. The loaders we book at around half of new so lets add on 1500. The mower again should be half of new.
