Well guys winter finaly hit upstate NY with a vengince. I moved to the southern tier 17 years ago and now I remember why. Eight feet on the ground snowing 5" an hour and a lot more on the way according to my daughter and brother. They live in the snow belt off the Eastern end of lake Ontario. I remember back in 66 it snowed hard and the wind blew for nearly two weeks. Barns and houses were coverd with 30 foot drifts and on the level it was documented at 15 feet, ah those were the days. No school for three weeks, waiting for the big rotery plows to cut the roads out. We all had plenty of food, the power stayed on and we just hunkered down.

Sounds like the key to filling tires vs. not filling is the size of the tractor and the tires. On my JD 4710 I have the R4 tirs and was able to gain about 1000 lb. of weight. On smaller tractors and tires it sounds like adding external weights be it wheel weights or 3 pt ballast and possibly chains is the way to go. I went with the Rim Guard product because I did not want to deal with the corrosive nature of calcium chloride. Yes the Rim Guard costs more but not as much as a new set of wheels.

I guess it is universal, we all want our smaller machines to dig and pull like the big ag tractors and that just won't happen. All we can do is weight them down and give them all the help we can.

Blueman, they last a long time, wear is not the issue, chewing up the pavement is.

We used to use them in a commercial snow removal application, both at a trucking terminal and we needed to clear the ramps and loading docks, nothing else would plow up the ramps, and also clearing the access ramps for underground parking at the condo complexes.

A set would last a full season of commercial plowing operations no problem.

They changed the regulations now though after a person was killed when a vehicle they were trying to push slid down the ramp and killed them when they were pinned between it and another vehicle. All such ramps have to be heated to keep them clear now.

They don't do much for deep snow, but on hard-pack, or ice, they're tremendous.

Same up here Harvey. There was a big push on a few years back after some duals came off in traffic, to clamp down on big trucks not up to snuff.

After the got that issue straightened out, and got the junk either fixed or off the road, they started to look farther down the list, and rightly so.

I was speaking with one of Provinces top enforcement officers with the Provincial Police, our version of the State Troopers, at an industry trade show and he said they have told the front line officers to focus on pickups starting this year, particularly those pulling trailers, and landscapers and contractors in particular.

He said the will be focusing on safety above regulations, but wont turn a blind eye to a big violation of ANYTHING unsafe.

It's about time, if I have to play the rules, so does everyone else.

You can do a very rough calculation pretty easily, but, when I finish explaining how to do it, I'll explain why it's a waste of time.....

First, look up the "flat plate" size (footprint) of your tires, the tread width, multiplied by the length of the contact area, for instance, according to the Firestone Tire Data book, a 17.5L24 R4 tire has a footprint of 192 square inches. On the fronts, 10-16.5 R4's would have a footprint of 72 square inches.

So, 2 rears at 192 each is 384 square inches, plus 2 fronts at 72 each is 144 square inches for a total load-bearing area of 528 square inches.

Now, according to Deere, the tractor itself wieghs 3,450 pounds, so without the FEL or B/H attached, or an operator or ballast on it, it applies a pressure of about 6.5 PSI to the ground.

Now, speaking of operators, the average 225 pound man, with size 9 shoes, which have a "footprint" of about 10.25" by 3.25" or about 33 square inches, but you rarely stand flat-footed, almost never when walking in fact.

So, when the above person steps on the ground with just one foot, they are exherting 225 pounds, divided by (generously) 33 square inches, 6.8 PSI to the ground.

If you talk about just the heel coming down at the beginning of each stride, triple that, plus a little for the impact itself, so nearly 25 PSI is created.

So, as I stated early on, a tractor at 6.5 PSI is of little concern compared to what humans can do at 25+ PSI, or about 4 times as much.

One of the biggest problems in turf maintenance is the foot traffic, not vehicles, although repeated traffic can cause compaction, it's nothing compared to what a crowd walking can do to a field of turf.

Art, where do you find the "The ratings help but a higher TBN like 11 plus is a good thing to consider as well as a Sulfated ash count over 1."

I have looked at some of the brands here and don't see it on their label. Is that what Rotella means by "soot control"?

Anyone have an idea where to get internal engine parts for a Hinomoto E224 3 cylinder diesel. I think my rings are toast, as there is a lot of blow by (smoke) coming out of the vent tube, and the tractor is getting real hard to start when cold. I am hoping to find rings, and get by just deglazing the walls, and installing new rings. Hopefully I will also be able to find head a gasket.<br>

I have a JD 4300 year 2000. Within the first year my battery developed some corrosion at the positive terminal and under the battery. I cleaned and repainted the area, bought an equivalent Delco Freedom battery, made a new hold down device. The battery went in in 2000. Jan. 7th, 2007, still going strong. I didn't go to the dealer because the replacement would have been the same leaky type that was removed.

I sold the chipper so can't check how it rides in the pulley, but I do remember the Gates A-36 not being the perfect size on that chipper. It worked though. I still have an unused spare on the shelf for it.

I know the skids for a number of years have been using motor oil but not the tractor. I don't get in the shop for first hand wrenching anymore but I've never known about switching from one to the other without complications in longeviety.

Does the valve have cables, if so could have ice in it. The detent is on the bottom of the lift spool could have ice or rust in it. Iv'e only seen rust there but bein cold out ice is possible. The detent will unscrew off the valve.

Not for nothing, the frames should extend to the middle of the tractor or more. To connect to the loader frames is a plus and to get beyond the clutch housing area should eliminate any worry of the chassis as the weak point that normally breaks on the tractors is the clutch housing where it bolts to the engine. To add an additional brace from the front would also benifit the design.

I cleaned up a dog pen area for my next door neighbor that had a fence around it.<br>
There were several wood, 2 inch steel pipe and chain link fence post. <br>
Some I just pushed back and forth a time or 2 with the fel<br>
then hooked a chain on the FEL or BH bucket and wrapped the chain around the post and lifted them right out. I had to dig around the others a little with the BH before using the chain.<br>

EW,

You raise an interesting challenge. But this thread would need to get more interest than just you and me :)

I would probably want to appeal to the largest potential audience out there which I would guess is the SubCuts in order to get the most responses.

To simplify, folks could just respond: Green, Orange or Blue. If it gets a lot of interest, we could then expand the poll. But if not, this thread would just die a lonely death :(
