IMHO there is no such thing as an "expert"--whether here or in life in general. There is always someone who knows a little more than you, lived a longer than you, and done it a different way than you (wow I sound like my dad now), and had a little more fun than you doing it, and did it cheaper than you. I've worked for and with so-called experts and invariably we each brought something to the table that the other didn't have. But that's life ain't it?

I like bvance's reply. He's dead-on in my opinion. When this site becomes a board for strictly asking questions and no one can go off topic, then that falls under the category of DRUDGERY. Or a newspaper column. Or pay-by-the hour mechanic (some of my best friends are mechanics)

Those of us who are familar of "shop talk" or worked in a shop, know how things can get out of hand, but like bvance said, we are all friends---some have known each other longer and more intimately than others (and yes, Ann I realize this a sticking point with you, but that's the way it is).

Each of us come here for different reasons. For me it's an opportunity to "meet" others with semi-similar backgrounds--or not. Or "meet" others from the other parts of the globe. And I've come know some upstanding, nay outstanding people.

It just occurred to me that what we are doing here on TP is a modern version of farmers talking over the fence, or going into town and talking to parts guy at the local tractor dealership, or the feed store (who remembers those?) You know yer gettin' old when you start asking things like that.

When setting up wireless on my laptop I made the mistake of calling my wireless network by my family name. Then after I got all set up (including encryption - it takes some effort but do it.) I realized that everyone can see my signal and know which house it is coming from. (After I myself went around scouting out signals around me.) They can't tap into it but I still don't like people knowing which signal is mine.

KT, I figure for $125 a year for an annual inspection on one hand, and freezing risk on the other - I am willing to take the risk. No more risk than any house has of freezing pipes when the power goes out. I have seen the damage that freezing pipes can do with a place we once rented out. The tenant had the utilities and stopped heating the place.

Reason, if there's someone nearby you who does fabricating and welding, you can rig up a front plow like that shown in my picture # 15 for about $500 all in, using an older truck plow as the basis.

Good call Tony as I have a fellow that we helped about twenty years ago add them to his 430's but I'd have to look at the tractor again to remember where we went in with the lines. He did sell one of his about three years ago and although not in concours condition on the road side he did get 3,500 for it. The tires were all good and the original paint I'd rate about as good as you might find and the tach read around 2800 original hours.

With regards to the 1000 hours. I have seen some come in with that plus the highest being around 4500. Some looked like brand new others were ready for the scrap pile. You pretty much answered your own question. You best bet would be to look it over really well. Drive it around, try all the levers and buttons make sure they do what they are supposed to do. Then go drive a new one was there any strange noises in the used one not in the new. Don't be afraid to take some serious time going over the unit.

I loved the 2000 Tacoma four-banger I had but the wife simply could not get used to such a small truck. I like the older body style too! Of all the imported trucks they have always been my favorite.

That said, I now have a 2005 Dodge Quad-Cab 4x4, HD250 Diesel that cranks out over 16 MPG around town and averaged 18 MPG the first few tanks when I drove it to Maine in a snow storm during the break-in period (running in FWD much of the time). Have not taken a long trip since that time to check it.

But man do I love that diesel!

hardwood, realize you asked about saw dust but the newspaper will work if you put it down several layers thick. There is a lot of black plastic used in my part of the world for garden mulch. I like the solid one better than the woven for flower beds. It will absord the heat and kill weed seeds. Be sure to have drain holes in it. The best way I found was before unfolding use a pitch fork. You don't need a lot, while still folded ever foot of so will give you plenty. It also holds the moisture great. You do have to use something to hold it down. Something true in all mulches I guess, some animals like living under or in them. Man, makes me want to get the garden ready!

Dennis, I'm wondering that being this old computer is all but dead if it just isn't recieving all my E-mails, I never got the one you sent me with a password and user ID. Frank, sometimes when my antivirus software updates, it renews that problem for me. Right now had to cut it off to get TP to operate. It is not just TP this happens with for me so I know it is something about the antivirus software itself. The next update normally fixes it.

ALOHA! HAWAIIANBOB HERE; I JUST BOUGHT A NEW JD 115 A LAWN TRACTOR. THEY DELIVERED IT WITH A NEW BATTERY. I TOOK THE BATTERY OUT A SAW 2 SMALL SPECKS ON THE BATTERY HOLDER. I THINK THAT THIS WAS FROM AN ACID SPILL. I PUT A THICK PLACTIC BOTTOM PLATE DOWN AND THEN I GREASED THE WHOLE AREA WI GREASE, THEN I TURNED THE BATTERY UPSIDE DOWN TO CHECK FOR LEAKS, IT IS A SEALED BATTERY, NO LEAKS. THEN I PUT THE WHOLE BATTERY IN A HEAVY DUTY PLASTIC THICK BAG BEFORE I CONNECTED THE TERMALS. JUST IN CASE. ACID CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR PAINT PLUS YOUR BATTERY WILL DISCHARGE LITTLE BY LITTLE IF NO PLASTIC IS UNDER THE BATTERY. ALOHA! HAWAIIANBOB
