Pressure washers need a pressurized inlet water supply. Damage to the pump will occur if the pump is operated without a pressurized water supply. Call some of the supply houses and obtain the price of a pump to replace the pump currently on the unit. I would recommend you be setting down when you get the price. I am sure your friend would/will be real surprised at having to replace the pump when you return the unit. That said, the bottom line will be beteen you and your friend when you return the unit.

In my area the state is the second largest employer after IBM. IBM has been holding salaries flat for several years, while the government is raising my school taxes 6-8% per year. It will be almost impossible to retire where I live. Like Art says, there are no controls on tax increases. If taxpayers complain and vote the budget down the taxes increase anyway because of past contracts signed by the school teachers. Where does it end? Will the state and local government employees help feed me while I am living in my cardboard box in a few years? What type of box do you recommend? A refigerator box may work well. Can I fit a sleeping bed and a small table there? Maybe I will afford to keep my cell phone :)

Going a step futher on possibilities, from time to time the shippers have some damage or might have been done while uncrating and some pieces might need some touch-up. This is done at the shop that is selling the units after assembly. We use several types of cleaners to remove any excess overspray if the units one of them is Collinite color-up pre-wax. There probably are others but this has been a good product for many minor restorations of paint from old discolored paint to just overspray.

I'm about to dodge them in my Chevy for the Labor Day weekend. You would't know Michigan is struggling when you see the traffic on I-75, but it sure gets obvious when you see the number of vacation homes for sale when you start running the back roads.

I have a 5234D. I liked the tractor when I first got it. Have had 2 1/2 years put 86 hours on it. It has been in the shop for weeks and months at a time. New front end and way to much work on the tranny ( 5 times). The tractor is the worst investment I have ever made. If Cub Cadet doesn't replace the tractor this time it will be an expensive planter until it is paid off and I can get a Kubota.

Ahh, my mistake, I misunderstood you, I meant 2' of sand out from the wall, from the surface to the footings.

I agree, a slab at grade and flush with the door sill is not good.

Peters is right about the newer 12 volt batteries. However, all the Russian machines I've seen, Belarus, Zetor, etc., all had two ENORMOUS 6 volt batteries in them to aid in cold weather starting. Each of these have not just massive cranking amps, but large amounts of reserve cranking power. This is not needed south of the Arctic circle though. As you say, your's lights up just fine.

You could easily replace those in your machine with a pair of modern 12 volt batteries wired in a parallel circuit., simialr to those used in a diesel pickup as Peters mentioned.

Bear in mind though that on a diesel tractor, there is no real need for much, if any, wiring beyond a starter circuit and a fuel shut off relay. You can rig up the basics in just a few minutes if need be.

As for pulling power, yes, they are that, the reason is they also weigh a LOT more than a comparable horsepower North American tractor. This made them really popular for things like forestry work. The extra weight was good for traction, but creates a lot more compaction from the tires too.

Art was referring to the category of machine, Industrial as opposed to Estate or Chore Tractor. Kind of like Car VS Truck, but we all know the abuse a police car gets and they stand up fine.

Most of my fleet is not Industrial machines, and they stand up to far more punishment in a season than most homeowners can inflict in a lifetime!!

As an aside .... FIVE HUNDRED HOURS on a 2002 machine?!!! Good Lord man, get that beast working!! LOL.

We've been averaging 200 hours per machine a MONTH up here this summer!!

Yes, you NEED a FEL on that machine!!

My client had a cheepy Poulan "Wild Thing" saw that wouldn't start. When she gave it to me, it was drenched in fuel and oil since she had it stored up side down. I sprayed the area inside the cover where the off switch connects to the handle and linkages with carb cleaner. Turns out the contacts either weren't making contact or were contacting and shouldn't have been---the cleaner worked.

EW, it's a sort of convoluted process, but the 'clients' I'm talking about are municipalities that we contract to for snow removal for sidewalks and such.

Thus the units you see in my picture # 6.

In order to meet "minimum equipment standards" as laid out in the bid forms, the machines MUST be CUT's, equipped with HST, R4's and a few other minor things, remotes, etc. Without this meeting this list of minimum spec's you cannot even bid on, let alone win a contract.

Our problems are not with the tread design, per se, but that the rubber used in an R4 (or those that you spoke of and all "industrial tread" tires) is very hard to prevent them being torn up by rough ground. Unfortunately in the winter the already hard rubber is like marble and is so slippery that the tires spin like they're on ice, and since we cannot run chains or studs (which would chew up the very sidewalks were clearing) the only thing we can do is lay down an inordinate amount of sand (which also grinds the tires down) and spin happily along.

If the slip clutch was working properly it would not have been welded together. Sounds like this unit may have had some use. IMHO there is rarely such a thing as a lightly used item for sale. My experience is that lightly used means "lightly used after I painted over the signs that it was heavily used".

I had essentually the same system using a spring in KY. In the summer the spring was just a steady trickle. I only had 2 kids, but the previous owners had 6. It used a normal cement septic type tank that was 1500 gallons.
The tank was buried with the top exposed so you could clean. With a steady flow I never had any problems with freezing in KY.

Before I got to excited about changing a bunch of parts, I think I'd spend $10 on a good stainless steel thermostat, get the tractor to running temperature and stick the thermostat in the coolant and see if it really is that hot, or if the $5 sensor just went bad, or there is a bad ground in the meter's cicuit or something simple.

I've seen several instances were people thought their machine was running either really hot or cold, in all cases the thermostat said it was the gauge or sending unit that was wrong.

As far as I can remember, pump spec's are purely hypothetical. All done on paper if you will.

Likewise flow rates, displacement times the rpm yields what they say the pump "can" do.

I don't know about the particular efficiency ratings, but I know if you look at the Mil. Spec. ratings of things, they usually represent the "real" numbers, such that a 9hp Honda is Mil. Spec. rated as a 5hp engine.
