donb1963, A couple of questions and some things you could check and with my thoughts.....<br>

With the tractor running with the transmission in neutral, with foot off the clutch, will it grind when you try and put the pto in gear??<br>

I think the squealing noise you have when you push the clutch pedal is probably the release bearing. You load the bearing [close the gap]when you push the clutch and then the bearing starts turning.... stops when you take your foot off if adjusted correctley. I assume you have a two stage clutch??<br>

If you have a loader you will have to remove a bracket ... the left side is a little easier since the controll valve is on the right.... plus you can push the clutch pedal with your hand while looking in the bell housing to try and see what is going on.<br>

Here are some pictures of an 254 that will give you a idea of what to look for and see.<br>

What is the difference between the pull type and non pull?
Normally a pull type connects to the draw bar rather than the 3 pt hitch.

Is there a way to tell if a cutter is medium or heavy duty?
The SQ are light weight cutters. Normally they have 3 weights. In these 7-8 ft cutters light is less than 1000 lb. Medium is about 1200 and heavy is more than 1600.

Looks like the Woods DS96 is the lightest mentioned of the three links.
Oneace states the tractor used in the photo is a TN. If the Rhino talks as low as 45 the Woods would be the same. If you look at the pricing some of these are 1/3 more than the Bush Hog.

If you're 27HP and above I'd say you're ok. It depends on what you're raking too. Loose dirt with debris takes more power to pull. And 4x v. 2wd makes a difference too. You may want to consider mounting a rear remote-powered hydraulic cylinder to rotate it. Makes work into play!

BROKEN: My '05 LS185.b listed at $47,000 with enclosed cab, heat, standard aux. hyd., weight kit, turnsignals, block heater, 2-speed, hyd. locking plate (sweeet!), 72 inch bucket and a bunch of other stuff. Dealer gave me $20,000 trade-in on my '03 LS180 with 300 hours. You can buy these all day still for dealer trade-in price.

With your employee discount what would you be looking at?

You can get a used, plain-Jane 170 for about $10K, and it may work fine for you. Add steel tracks and you'll have a fairly powerful machine to do most of your tasks. Traction is another thing. You'll have 10 inch wide tires which aren't known for being floaters, though you can put 12" wide on there, it raises your bucket heel about 1.5 inches making grading difficult. Either way I would suggest steel over-the-tire tracks like I've got---mine's almost unstopable---I can go through 18 inch deep marsh mud with no problem with a full load! I can get you dealer cost on a set if you want. I saved $300 on mine by working toward being a dealer---and they're made in Wisconsin too! Ten inch list at around less thn $1000, your price about $800.

You can make your tracks like I didd using logging chain and 1/2 x 2 inch bars bent and welded to the chain, but that will cost about $600. They work realy well but need constant attention to adjust them to keep 'em tight.

Weight will always work in your favor when getting traction--if you've got the money, surely go for the 180/185--you won't go wrong. For comparison, for about 2 years I used a LS170. I thought it was a bully until I tested a 180 for a month. I was sold. The 170 felt like a kid's toy. I can pick up and move an entire car from the side with the grapple bucket. (have another one for sale just like it), and back home even dug my neighbor's septic tank hole in solid rock hard clay with it. Couldn't ahve done it without tracks though.

I also considered the Kubota 2630/3030 but after visiting and speaking with 6 different dealerships, I decided on the Deere 3120, plenty in stock. Reason: Kubota pricing on their tractors were not attractive and they did not want to haggle. In the end, the 3120 with FEL cost me $17,633. The greater weight of the deere 3120 at 2900 vs 1786 for the Kubota 2630 gives me much more needed traction, and of course the greater size comes with a commensurate increase in performance. At this time, I have no regrets but since I could only buy one, I am unable to offer a drivers seat performance comparison evaluation. However, given the scope of the work that I have done with the 3120, I am convinced that had I gone with the smaller and lighter Kubotas (at similar pricing), I would not have been happy.

Took possession of my 3120 2 weeks ago, I can't be happier. My initial interest was the 2520, but after getting quotes of less than $800 more for the 3120, in stock, compared to 2520 (need to order), it was an easy decision. Being that the 3120 is twice the tractor (2900lbs vs 1800lbs), I suggest you give the 3120 serious consideration. I got mine out the door (with 8.75% tax) for $19k with FEL.

Thanks Ken and Trashcanman, I would never have guessed that since my only connection to Stephen King is that my neighbor at my last house was the producer of "Pet Cemetary". Being next to me he didn't have a high class house, just a country hideaway for him. Guess not every producer lives a Hollywood life.

Exactly which test(s) in the owners manual fails? The Neutral Start Switch test? Gear models have a neutral switch that detects when the transmission is in neutral. Hydro models have a jumper across where the switch would be. If the switch is bad or the harness is damaged maybe it will give the symptoms you describe. Here's sort of a catch-all suggestion. Crawl under the tractor and inspect all the wiring harnesses. Sometimes a stick can catch and pull a wire out. Make sure they're all tucked up tight with some zip-ties.

Might be cheaper to mount a skid steer quick plate and buy a loader bucket than buy green. I would then give you more flexibility.

I have a stop at the JD and NH dealers today, then I will make my final decision. I guess I am a bit skeptical about Cub Cadet tractors. The 6284 looks like an overgrown lawn mower, but when I looked more closely, it seems to be have heavy duty axles. And it does have nice features.
