Thanks for the great advice. I thought about it last time I was mowing and figured the back end of the RFM looked a lot like the front of those nifty zero turn mowing gizmos. But the point is well taken about being careful so as to not have the tractor crunch the RFM mower deck and bend the PTO shaft.

Try Hercules ROPS. They provide certified retrofit ROPS for many brands and models. They have a distributor in the USA. Website link is below.

ROPS will soon be available for most grey market tractors.
There is an Australian company called Hercules ROPS, that has a Distributor based in California. They supply certified ROPS for all the grey market brands and these ROPS will be available in the next 2-3 months.

Having rebuilt several D series Wheelhorses, I can attest to the potential difficulties that one will be experiencing finding components.

Many of the parts that were needed were for the engine. That is, I had the 20 hp 4cyl Renault auto engine in mine, Model D-250. This unit was the biggest and baddest of the breed, without question....certainly the heaviest.

A tractor WAY ahead of its time. Most of the parts for the engine, albeit metric, were able to be found either from junkyards (Renault LeCar), or cross referncing bearings, seals, etc. I also found a host of graveyards off the internet that I chatted with.

Are you looking to rebuild the engine? The tractor? Tiller? The whole enchilado? Most components of the D 200 are still reasonably available from the local Toro dealer, as Art mentioned.

I'm now interested in looking at the L3400 ... I understand it has a few more HP at the PTO but a few less options than the L3130 like ... a MMM <br>

With all that being said above I still would be interested to know what is thought by folks of the quoted dealer prices on got the tractors ... particullarly the L3130.<br>

I have a BX 2230 and I haven't really found a use for the float option. If you have the bucket angle such that it angles in to the dirt it will automatically continue to dig in just due to the physics of the situation, regardless of the float option.

If you have the angle of the bucket tipped back so it does not dig in, it is usually useless to accomplishing anything as the bucket just floats up over everything and does nothing. I suppose it might work if you raise the FEL up and tip the bucket all the way forward and use it as a scraper, the float function would probably work, but I never remember to use it in that fashion.

Unless I am missing something, that is my experience.

All the best to you and your son. Certainly heartfelt condolences are sent your way. Just realize, that your brethren that share your passion for the four wheeled beauties are standing with you.

Perhaps, you could bend an old coat hanger and paint it blue (as ROPS), spray a rhody bloom orange, and place them in the flower garden as a rememberance.

Have you ever tried to "ride" a 19" Murray ? Me thinks it would be rather slow, and uncomfortable! ...and the handle...where oh where could that go? (be nice now! lol)

Ann: Actually, anecdotal evidence has its value. In this matter of materials selection you need to be especially attuned to the climate and soil conditions (and pests) in your area and their likely effect on the wood used in the project. Talk to local builders and homeowners who have attempted similar projects and form your own judgement.

No more anecdotal evidence - I promise. I will just say that my choice of materials might be very different for my primary home in a subdivision here in SE PA versus my summer home deep in the woods of NE PA. A distance of 100 miles, different soil conditions, about 8 deg F. average temperature difference and 1000 ft of additional elevation combine to make a world of difference in materials selection.

I can appreciate being rural ~ I have a little better than a hours drive to get to the interstate highway, and would not have it any other way.

I recently had a neighbor (down the road a good piece) drill a well. The well drill rig was working from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm every weekday for three weeks! What a sludge pit and run...Not a lot of water or recovery either, infact I think I can still hear his jaw hitting the ground when he learned of the depth, oh, and the final bill !

I am sure he had a contract for x number of feet etc, but it was still a whopper of a finale!

One of the nastiest rock species in our area up here, is what is known 'round these parts as Cheshire Quartz ~ wicked nasty to drill thru - eats bits up real fast, and needless to say slows the entire process considerably.
Curious as to what type of subsurface you're finding.

Which tiller did you get? You said your tractor was the same but 4x4. Is yours only 17hp? I just bought one also.Most of the ones around here are rated to high in hp.I even been looking in the northern tool catalog.They have a Nortrac 47" rated 18 to 25hp.A suggestions??????????????

Well I went into the casing below the seat and everything looked normal. I manually put the gears into there proper location and everything appeared to worked fine. I manually worked the PTO from behind and found resistance from the gears. I tried it in 540 as well as 1000. However after putting everything back together again I found that the PTO still was not working. So now I'm lost and not sure what else to try. Any ideas?

Our entire fleet is equipped with quick drain fittings from new.

A 1/4 turn on valve is all that is required to drain or close each reservoir. The valve handles and housings are drilled, and each valve is tie-wired shut after each service. This provides both a safety feature and an anti-tampering indicator.

Mind you, this time of year our machines get new oil & a filter basically once a week also. We are more likely to wear the threads out than strip them!! LOL.

For the wheels we have a special set of 3/4" drive extensions, they have a pre-set torque value each, and are colour coded, it doesn't matter what the impact gun is set to, or how hard you yank on a Johnson bar the extension just spins free when it reaches it's pre-set torque value.

I got a chance to pull a nice load yesterday to try out the new truck's towing ability. After I figured out the change from 6 pin to 7 pin wiring connector I was off and running with the Kubota on the trailer and bush hog in the box. Do you know that there is a +12V pin at 1 oclock on the circle and if you're 180 degrees off on the wiring pattern your electric brakes are always locked up? :) <br>

To make a long story short, I'm really impressed with what 300+ diesel HP gives you as a tow rig (which I'm sure all you diesel truck owners already know). I was only towing about half the rated weight capacity for the truck at the receiver hitch but the difference between this and my old 200 hp V6 gas engine is like night and day. <br>

I'm thinking I need a longer trailer. 16' is not long enough to carry anything on the back of the tractor. That's why I had to put the mower in the truck box. I wonder if 20' is long enough to keep my BH on the tractor and move it?<br>

Put a little lean-to on the side of your barn and keep your tractor there.

It's a little work to make it, but less than it would be to dig a 6' deep hole to put you in because you have no ROPS on your machine!!!
