Grinder, earlier this year I purchased the 18HP Honda 8000 watt portable generator from Northerntools. I'm very pleased with it with the exception that I have not been able to manually start it as backup (it starts fine using electric start). Cost me $1,900 I believe.

I liked the 6500 watt portable diesel but it didn't have enough watts to drive all the appliances my wife wanted to support. I would rather have 20 gallons of diesel hanging around rather than 20 gallons of gasoline.

I spent a lot of time considering more expensive options, but as AnnBrush suggests, you get into big money very quickly. If you use the propane standby units you need to purchase or rent propane tanks, use fuel on test cycles etc. Here you are talking $3,000+. If you go diesel standby you are talking $5,000-$10,000.

I realize you last posted a while back, but have you tried using John Deere Machine Finder on their site? Before we purchased one three years ago I was surpised at all the used ones there.

Depending on the age of the vehicle there may need to be a lot of small changes. Ethanol will have a high percentage of water and can be corrosive. I think the brass fittings can be a problem depending on the type used.

Exxon state the base stock is polyalpha olephins with additives, same as Royal purple. If reacted these are essentually the same as polyethylene only shorter chains. Purified from mineral bases they are sold as ISOPAR or Isoparaffinic oils. These are sold as rubbing oils and placing in a variety of lotions. The longer chains are vasoline. Straight olephin chains have poor lubicating properties, they are just have better oxidation resistance than less refined mineral based oils. Originally Quaker state or PA grade crude was high in paraffins as the oil bearing stata was older than most and the organics were nearly free of reactive double bonds. Without other additives the polyalpha oils would not be useful. Exxon Mobile states that they improved the additive package of Mobile 1 in 2004.<br>

If you read the MSDS for the Rotella Synthetic it is just highly refined base stock. Petro Canada and Penziol/Quaker state take regular oil and react it with hydrogen to remove all the extended conjugation (reactive double bonds)of the molecules to product a clear oil. These base stocks are then composed of cyclic olephins, some stable aromatics and naphthenic (cyclic olephins, hydrogenated aromatics)which in theory provide better film strength and lubrication ability than base synthetic alpha-olephins. As they are all ready reacted with hydrogen they are as resistant to degradation as the synthetic stock. They are synthesis is one on the molecules.<br>

I was unaware until this thread that the hydrogenated oils were now being called synthetic. No oil is 100% synthetic oil as other additives are required to carry contaminates (surfactants), reduce oxidation and decrease thermal break down. Most alphaolephins also have additives to increase the lubricity of the oils. Essentually the oil just becomes the carrier for the other additives. Improvements in mineral motor oils as evidenced by the SAE letter codes are primarily due to the improvements in these additives.

OK - But as stated earlier the automatic STILL gets better fuel economy on average, so not withstanding all the programmer biases and other objections raised, the computer still beats a human as a gear shifter for this objective.

I have a new CK30HST and it is a great tractor. I also have
2 JD CUTs and I have had a bunch of Kubotas. My nearest
dealer is a 5 hr RT drive thru horrible traffic. No way.
I get my parts drop-shipped from a good out of state dealer and everything so far has been way cheaper than Kubota or JD parts, despite the new $15 added drop-ship fee. Just don't buy one oil filter at a time. Since I do my own service, having a dealer near me not a big issue, however.

The factory hoes that come with 3-pt connections generally
come with a very hefty toplink and 2 side brackets that connect to the middle of the toplink and the ends of the lower 3-pt lift arm (or near it). This "triangulation" makes a rigid connection to the tractor which keeps the 3-pt arms from lifting. Some people leave these side brackets off. That is a BIG mistake as these hoes can toss
a CUT around like a toy.

As for CharlieK's L3130, Woods makes a "4-point" subframe that is very nice and is used for the 7500. Unfortunately, it sells for about $950 and takes months to get. This subframe seems to be used on the new Woods BH80X backhoes, too.

Kthompson is right about some construction companies having specific equipment colors. There is one I know of that is large enough that Deere changed their factory so they could paint backhoes in that color. Helped them make the sale since the customer didn't have to go through the extra step and higher cost of a re-paint.

I went to Hitachi's website (link below) and their equipment is an orange color. Probably helps with visibility on the jobsite. But I may be reading too much into it.

My concrete slab is not an agregate surface. There isn't any problems that I saw as long as you are careful. If you ram the tractor in there and shove the loader forward, then you will get scrapes in the concrete. I've had to do that once or twice due to the differening levels of the floors. If I have room, I shove the loader more forward on my concrete pad and then it works fine. When I get cheap on space, I run into issues and then I have to shove it forward which puts scrape marks in the concrete. Blame the user, not the unit.

The L245 I used to own had an L1200 FEL on it. Not sure if other FEL's were available or not. To ballpark the value, it the FEL is in decent shape allow $750 to $1,000. About the same for the hoe. The tractor itself depending upon condition and actual hours (the L245 tachometer hour meter does not register actual accurate time used unless the engine is at FULL pto operationg rpm) just estimating around $1,500 to $2,500. Expect to pay much more if you are buying it from a dealer off the lot.

Mark, we run just the stuff in the silver bottle, "Diesel Kleen� +Cetane Boost�" year round in our fleet. If we get a fill up (on-site or on the road) of junk fuel we put some PS 911 in as needed only.

Never had a fuel related problem yet, summer or winter.

No matter how you slice it, a 100 spot parking lot has to be 3/4 acre or bigger.

How MANY Ventrac's are thinking of buying?

For the same money I would be looking for a Toyota or Nissan pickup truck or a Jeep TJ and put a small snow plow on it.

Scott, according to a dealer for Kodiak they only make impliments. That name may be a local brand name. I am interested to find out what company manufactured the tractor. Have you found out who did?

If you need to put a PTO hydraulic pump together you'll have about $500 into the pump, reservoir, hose and fittings. By that time you might as well buy a self contained splitter with two stage pump. The plus to that is that your tractor is then independent of the splitter.

Bunky, in your case, a RFM will work and give you a good cut. In my opinion, the mower that will give you the best cut is one that is equipped with as many floatation wheels/rollers as possible and has the higher blade tip speed. Woods and Land Pride make very good RFM's althought a bit pricey. The draw backs to a RFM is that it adds to the length of the tractor and makes turns and operations in tight place much more difficult although is does make it easier to gut up under trees and shrubs by backing the mower under. Trimming around trees, flower beds, fences, etc. is more difficult with the RFM. I think in your case, the question you will have to mull over is whether swaping from a MMM to a RFM is worth the considerable cost. If you can sell the MMM at a decent price and perhaps find a good condition used RFM, you might come out OK.

I use my L3130 much like you plan on using yours. I've had very good service out of the AG tires. If you plan on using them out in the woods in the snow they really shine and should be much better than the wider R4s with less tread depth. I've used mine for logging the past two winters and in loose or packed snow they have excellent traction.

Just did my 200 hour, actually a little early due to the weather. There is a fuel filter replacement procedure in the owners manual. As long as the fuel tank is more than 1/2 full, you can open the bowl and replace the filter without needing to bleed the system. I make sure the tank is full before replacing the filter, just to be sure.

Front axle fluid at 200 hours is recommneded.

I also clean the suction screen every time I change the Hydraulic oil. There is always something stuck to it. Clean with a little solvent and low pressure air.

Check the primary air cleaner, blow it off with a little low pressure air.
