I am considering a boom mower for my Kubota B 2710. This is a CUT with 27 hp. I would appreciate any feed back and suggestion on brand of mower.<br>

I read with interest these replies and remember once helping my hephew with a very well snagged auger. Nothing sheared and nothing stopped until the full auger was in the ground held by tree roots. So, shear bolts as is any safety device is not 100%. That was when I wondered, where is reverse? It was a lessoned well learned in keep ready to stop the PTO at all times.

Yes the axle ratios are VERY different, but so are the rolling circumferences of the front and rear tires. The difference between axle ratios and tire sizes however negate all but about 5% of the difference, this is called "lead". This is done on purpose for reasons of handling, if it was not there the front wheels would want to wander side to side when the tractor was in 4WD.

The traction lock only acts on the rear axle on most (especially smaller) tractors, on some big units it does act on both axles.

Locking the front axle on a small (read: homeowner sized) would also likely lead to all sorts of complaints and warranty claims from people who locked the front end then made a sharp turn.

The only real reason for having it on some and not all is cost. This is sort of like cab & A/C, on a big tractor it's pretty common, on a CUT it's pretty spendy.

I have a 1974 135 with 2500 hours, decent shape though with cosmetically challenged fenders. Loaded tires, Perkins diesel 39 hp, 4x2/2R trans, everything works I'm selling for $3,600. I'm too far from you though, this is just for ideas. This will pull 6' equipment all day long. I needed 4wd and bought one and need to sell the other. Good luck, Jim

I thought I would give an update. I decided to go with the BX23, and I think I have made a good choice. I now have about 70 hours on it. Here are some of the major tasks I have done with it:

1) Tree Stump Removal

I have removed a variety of stumps from 4" to 12" in diameter. The larger stumps definitely take a while to dig around, but the BX23 was able to do the job.

2) Live Tree Removal

I needed to clear a place for a new Lester Building to be put up so I could park the BX23 someplace. I had to take down around a dozen trees in the process. They were poplar between 4" and 14" in diameter. I would dig around and break the outgoing roots and then push these over. Some of the 4" trees could just be pushed over. The 14" tree ended up with about a 4' in diameter root ball. This one took several hours to eventually push over. I do recommend doing this rather than cutting trees down and then trying to pull the stump.

3) Organic material removal

For my new garage I had to get rid of all the organic material (dirt, roots, etc) from an area of 48' x 41'. On my property it was about 6" deep. I did this mostly with the FEL but used the BH at times. It took me a couple of days, I would guess in total I moved about 10 yards of dirt.

4) Putting in fill

I had 12 truck loads of fill delivered, each about 12 yards. It probably took me about 30 minutes to spread out one load. I used the FEL and a King Kutter BX 48" Box Blade. The guy who delivered the fill was impressed with the amount of work the BX23 was able to do.

5) Making trails

My property is mostly Poplar and Birch. I have found that by dragging the box blade behind me I am able to do a great job of creating new 4' trails and smoothing out my current trails. I have had to remove quite a few boulders (12" to 18" in diameter) and was able to do so with a combination of the box blade and FEL (I didn't want to go back and switch to the BH and then have to switch back to the BB). This is probably going to be the main job for my BX23 and it does a great job. Typically when I come across (yet another) tree across a trail I just get the FEL under it and then push it either out of the way or push until it snaps and then push it out of the way. My trails have never looked so good! I find I prefer the FEL and BB with the BX23 over my Swisher Rough Cut and ATV for the trails.

I am very happy with the BX23. Sure, a bigger tractor would be faster in some instances, but if size and price are issues then I think the BX23 is a winner.

I use 2-ply 6" wide drive belting from TSC. Buy the belting by the foot, slot belting to fit behind the cutting blade and hang below blade about 1 1/2". If you need stiffer soft blade add two belts. works great on fine gravel and blacktop drives.

Did you check the LoadMatch switch? When that is off, my 4310 will lag when ascending hills. Even with it on, it still lags a bit, but not nearly as much.

Unless they changed it, what keeps the thing from unscrewing are a couple of deep punch holes that interrupt the threads.

The Phillips screws cover the pilot holes used in the punching operation.

Pick one, dual tires will give you better floation, but less traction. Single rears will give you better traction but less floatation.

You can't have it both ways.

If you're concerned about spreading out the weight it would be far easier for you to use a 3pth dolly, sometimes referred to as a jeep.

Besides duals on the rear would be a big hinderance to your traction with items like a box blade.

Only mildly related, I heard of a guy who added some ATF to a tank of fuel in his diesel pickup in an effort to imporove injector performace.. went to a livestock auction and the feds did not like his red fuel, fined him for burning off road diesel in his on road truck...of course I doubt anyone would check a VW for this but....

First let me say that any tractor is great, but I consider the 4200 the red headed step child of the John Deere line. It is a mid frame compact with a small frame engine. The front tires look and are tiny on the tractor and the bigger the better. It can only take the 420 loader, a distant second best to the 430 loader. The hydraulic pump puts out only 2125 PSI compared to 2500 PSI for the 4300 and 4400, meaning the 420 loader should be stronger on the 4300 and 4400 and the 420 is already weak. The 3 point lifts 500 pounds less 24 inches behind the links. It is exactly the same length and width as the 43,4400 but 3 inches shorter in wheelbase, and only 225 pounds lighter. If the price is truly great, fine, but go for the better models if possible. Should not dent the yard, mine does not even with loader and loaded R4 tires. Axle should not be an issue in 2001, if it has one hydralulic cylinder and a tie rod to the opposite wheel it is the newer one on a 43,4400. Double ended hydr. cylinder is the older style.

They love them. Both neighbors are Amish and one has it on its own steel wheels like a trailer that attaches to the drawbar, and the other has it on the 3 point hitch. As you can imagine the one with the drawbar mount actually lifts up on the tractor, so with either setup a large tractor is helpful. Another thing to keep in mind it the lift cylinder is single acting so it does not replenish the tractor at all. My neighbor has run dry on high lifts when the tractor was low on hytrans.

Greg and Tommy, Thanks so much, With Tommy Help today I started in to the drive shaft and with hope I will be able to discover the trouble tomorrow morning. I am having trouble moving the spring loaded shaft back but at Tommy suggestion I will find a way tomorrow. Work called on account of rain. Thanks guys

Thanks for the tips, Murf. I just bought what the guy at the trailer place said I needed. The hook came with a ball as an assembly so I didn't question if it was correct or not. the hook may not latch closed with a taller ball on it, but measurements will tell the tale. A smaller lunette ring will surely help too.

Slightly off-topic, but I talked to a guy that builds houses on the side of his regular job (electrical utility lineman). This was about 3-4 weeks back. At that time, he said plywood had jumped $5 a sheet.

Also, my transformer had blown and needed replacing. I was lucky. My utility is down to 25 transformers left for a 50 x 70 mile service area (mostly rural) for the rest of teh year. Everything else went south. It would suck to lose a transformer in Iowa in December and be told the utility has nothing left.

Thru the years I've always had a liking for Case-IH hytran in hydro's as they were the first people to use the hydro's. I have had the time to see the differences in transmissions and I only recommend the Super UDT! There is no real copy as much as some say they can! Super UDT is not a 20 weight in any shape or form meaning in cold weather you definitly will be hurting the life of your tractor.
