Dear Lion,

Yes, I am getting the little 'click' sound at about 3 sec after turning the ignition key to its first stop point. I thought this would mean that the glow plugs were done heating, but this appears to be wrong. It would not have been a concern if it were winter time here outside of Fargo, but with the warm days and nights of summer, it was strange that it was so hard starting. (I did have a heating element installed at the time of purchase to prepare for winter use.) I went to my Dad's house south of Minneapolis where he has a JD4400 and he mentioned not having the problems that I have. Seeing the comments here about all engines above the model 4115 makes sense now.

A guy on another board posted that he runs the Hydro Fluid he drains from his tractor in the engine.
Says he mixes it half and half with doesel .
What do you fellows think about doing that ?

Like 2ndhandlion, I run a 72" JD MMM mower. I also have a JD 325 with a 54" deck. Both cut just fine. But one thing I have found is if I'm running in deeper grass so the discharge chute can't let the grass out, I don't get a good cut. It's usually my fault for running the chute opening right against a hill or mowing 2 ft tall thick stuff.

I came across this phrase in a book yesterday "FENDER SKIRTS". A term I haven't heard in a long time and thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice.

Like "curb feelers" and "steering knobs." Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you.

Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental.

When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?" At some point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with "emergency brake."

I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the "foot feed."

Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the "running board" up to the house?

Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - "store-bought." Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy.

"Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term "world wide" for granted. This floors me.

On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure.

When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a family way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply"expecting."

Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just "bra" now "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all.

I always loved going to the "picture show," but I considered "movie" an affectation.

Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down!

Here's a word I miss - "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffee maker." How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.

I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "Electrolux." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!"

Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening kids with castor oil anymore.

Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most "supper." Now everybody says "dinner." Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts.

Someone forwarded this to me. I thought some of us of a "certain age" would remember most of these.

Check your local scrap yard. The yard near us has a whole area stacked with old forks. Be carefull though, many go to the scrap yard because they failed a UT or Dye Penetrant test for cracks.

If you over greese it on some mowers the mower belt rides in greese.
This happened on my bolens mower .
Belt was so satured with greese I had to replace the belt with with a new one.
A well greesed belt does a good job of slipping.Greese and oil can cause the belt to become hard and glazed and slip.

I have had problems with the Power Steering being hard to turn and the front end loader not wanting to go up. The PTO works fine. I have changed the hydraulic fluid, filter, and have cleaned the transmission screen. Everything seems to function after a cold start up, but that only lasts until the system warms up. I can tighten the rock shaft bypass valve that controls the rate of 3 point drop and it helps. I can remove the attachment off the 3 point and use the loader only and everything works OK.

How many of you owners out there are aware that the TC40 (at least my DA's) have an aux power port (cigarette lighter type)?? I have 2 of these units and only yesterday found this neat little feature while cleaning things up while awaiting return of the dump truck to load. It is located on the floor pan behind the seat and in front of the fuel tank. It is covered by a black rubber cap with a raised grip. At first I thought it was a vent for the differential so I looked under to follow the hose and found wires attached. That led to pulling out the cap to discover the outlet.<br>

Only place this is covered in the manual is buried in the wiring schematics - no mention whatsoever that I could find anywhere else. Don't know what ohter TC models have this feature but it's worth a look. Endless uses - cell phone charges, cd/dvd players, spotlights, etc.

I am considering buying a new 40 hp 4WD FOTON tractor. The price over the big makers is outstanding. Well I was wondering if anyone could give me a review of the tractors (FOTON) and any problems they have heard about with them. I had a 4110 Mahindra with the Bradco 511 hoe. Was a great machine,. I don't think anyone can go wrong with the brand. Mahindra at least strives to get it right, help the dealers if ever a problem and tends to continue offering machines that can pretty much cover any category a person may need
