Other questions to consider: What about the warranty issues involved in mounting a backhoe on a new tractor not designed to handle it?

Unless you are very, very small you will have to replace or fabricate a new ROPS. The standard ROPS is too short and narrow to sit under while operating a backhoe.

If you prefer Green, head straight to the 4110/410/46 package and accept no less. You will get a factory designed, complete unit that is all covered by the same warranty. I don't think you will be disappointed.

If you are open to all colors, it is real hard to beat the BX23 for package price. I have had both, and IMHO, Kubota makes the better backhoe.

The controls have a wonderful "touch" and there is no slop or banging around anywhere in the structure.

I just couldn't live with a 500 pound loader capacity, and the small tires on my lumpy ground were beating the hell out of my back.

You're right. I added another pic to the pics! This home built trailer made out of 2x3, 3x3 box frame with 2-3500 lb axles measures 62" between the fenders and is a little over 12' long. As you can see the tractor, tiller, loader actually just fits but I move it forward a little to add more tongue weight. Pulling a narrow trailer is great but it would be nicer about a foot bigger in each dimension.

I had my first opportunity to look at one of these XL units this past weekend. Here are my overall impressions comparing it to my BX2230 (all observation are my OPINION):

FEL: The FEL is a nice design, it is similar to the JD 2210's FEL. The install/removal seems to be very quick and easy. There are no "legs" like on the Kubota (My only pet peeve) and looks to be self standing. The construction of the unit, however, does not look anywhere near as robust as the BX, JD or the TZ. The bucket, especially, is very light looking to me.

3pt: Is much more limited than the Kubota which is smaller than the JD and TZ. It looks more like a CAT 0, very small, and no turnbuckle adjusters of any kind.

Tractor: The tractor itself looks like a nicely made unit. IT HAS FULL GAUGES!! There is a hand lever for the travel control (forward) in addition to a 2 pedal system, a-la JD. The Hydraulic Valve control is one lever to control the FEL, 3pt, Deck, everything. There is an electric toggle switch to go from the FEL to the 3pt. (Looks like a future problem to me) The tires and wheels are small, they may be smaller the BX1500, this could be a limiting factor too.

There is NO ROPS or SEATBELT! I didn't think this was legal, but I'm not a lawyer. Definitely a safety risk!

Over all I would call this unit a large lawn mower rather than a sub-CUT. Not to diminish its capabilities, I just think that it is less machine than the "big 3's" sub-CUTs (BX, JD, TZ).

Still, its better than a push mower and a shovel!!

To expand on JAZAK5, the 990 has the wet disk brakes and the 790 has the dry.

I went with the 790 because I didnt want a tractor that had lots of electric switches. Great machine. 128 hr since May-04

Chances area the shifting fork and the shifter are not where they should be. Normally at this point you would have to remove the shifter from the tractor and look at the fork to see why they became out of place.

THANKS. So I need to either down size to the 33 or fork out the extra $1400 to go the to TC40. I'm not sure what to do! If I have a TC 40 on a tandem axle trailer do you think I can pull it with a 1/2 ton pick up truck, or should I go to a TC33 , I know the TC33 weighs less and may trailer better than the TC40. I won't be moving it a lot, but there will be times when I will load it on a trailer.

First I have no direct experience, so don't mistake anything I say for knowledge. However, denwood's ideas make good sense to me and he's had success, so there ya go... Finally, I was at a conference recently and some of the Cooperative Extension folks are recommending barly straw "wattles". You might contact your local CE and see if they support this idea and could give you some tips for your particular situation. Good luck!

A hundred different things could be the cause of this. I would bet your not the first to have a threaded rod bust or strip out. With that many hours on it and no problems before, sounds like something happened recently. Any recent mishaps on or around the joy stick?

Whew! That's not an easy one to answer. There are several good manufacturers out there that have a tractor that will suit your needs. One thing you will here often on this board is discussions about the local dealer. You will need parts and service. That is a fact. You may want to find out which manufacturers are represented by local dealers. Then go visit them and get brochures for the tractors that you will be looking at. Talk to them and see if they seriously talk to you or will almost ignore you once they find out you are not buying a $200k farm tractor.

Now, getting to the good part, the tractor itself. If you are mowing down fields, then you are talking about bushhogs. Those will need to run off the rear PTO. So, look at you size of land that needs to be mowed with that. Then look at the power requirements for several sized mowers. That will help you to determine your minimum power you need.

For example, My JD 4310 is 32 Hp and 25-27 Hp at the PTO. I went that route because that was the power I needed to run a 5 ft tiller and a 6 ft mower off the rear PTO. It fit what I needed it to do. Also, that was the best balance of need and cost.

Will you want to be finish mowing with this tractor or just rough mowing? Are you ok with pulling a finish mower if that's a need or do you want a mid mount? Remember, a mid-mount is not as easy to attach/detach like a rear mount mower. But I find a mid mount is more agile for going around my many yard obstacles.

Maybe a good start is to make a list of what you want/need this tractor to do. Then prioritize the list starting with the absolute must do items and the minimum you can tolerate for that. Then what are the items that are nice to do's but are not critical so you have more give and take.

Remember, more power can run bigger implements. Bigger implements can get the job done quicker like rough mowing 5 acres. But, more power costs money. Less time/more money or less money/more time.

I'm not sure I am being terrible helpful. But when I finally bought my JD, I had a list of critical items and their minimums (like a 72" mower deck). That gave me my minimum power and therefore my minimum machine. The I balanced the like to do's with the cost.

Another area to look at is gear vs hydrostat drive. If you are mostly working with constant speed stuff, then you may be able to handle a lower cost/but usually rock solid gear drive tractor. If you do much maneuvering like I do, then hydrostat is a huge plus. Is it just you or will your wife be using it? Can she handle a clutch and shifting a gear transmission? Mine couldn't.

Just start looking at things one item at a time and you will slowly start eliminating the tractors that will not work for you. That is a start at least.

I'm in the market for a new tractor with a cab. I just looked at the Kioti DK65S 4x4 with cab and Perkins diesel. Also have looked at the New Holland TN70A with cab; both have FEL's and the prices are not that far apart as the NH is a new '04 and the Kioti is a new '05. Both have similar specs, but the Kioti seems to beat out the NH in some categories and is cheaper. Does anyone have input on these two rigs?? Thanks, Steiny

Maybe they thought the 4110 wouldn't have enough power to haul a Mirrow!
I remember reading where someone installed a mirrow on their loader. I can mount a mirrow on a piece of wood and then use clamps to hold the wood on as I don't want to drill hoes in the Loader Frame although I wouldn't think those little holes would weaken it. Thanks Bob
