I have lots of beautiful blue spruce I have grown from seedling. Last year I moved three large spruce (6-8 foot). I lost one of the three because I gouged the trunk with a tow strap. This year I moved about 16 large similiar sized spruce. I figure they are too close together anyway - might as well try to transplant rather than cut them down.

First I dig around the roots with backhoe, then wrap small piece of canvas around trunk, then loop towstrap around tree trunk and tie to bucket - pull out with bucket. Planted them ASAP and am watering them often. I'll give you the success rate next year. :)

So many tractors, so little time! I am looking to buy a new compact tractor to maintain 8 acres of finish mowing at a rural residence. In addition I will be doing some light landscape work and snow removal on a 400ft. lane. I am looking at the Kioti DK35, Kubota L3400 and New Holland TC35. From what I have read, just about any way I go would be a good bet, however, I am looking for insight from you the experts with regards to maintenance (I'm not mechanical), easy to operate and change attachments, Hydrostat or not (acreage is wide open with minimal trees), and what is the best bang for my buck. All 3 units have local representation. Any advice is greatly appreciated - Thanks!

To some extent it depends on what you're cutting, but my guess is a 5-footer on that machine would be best. I have a JD MX-5 medium duty cutter that is built like a tank, but it's a step up from the LX series. I don't know anything about Rhino's.

My TC29 powers out in waist tall field grass with a 5' cutter; anything less than that is does pretty well. In your case I'd worry about the weight of the cutter making the front end on your tractor light, unless you have a FEL or front weights. If don't have heavy cutting and the field is not steep, you might be able to use a 5' cutter. 4' would be safer and easier on the tractor.

Borrow a 5' if you can to try it out.

I also have loaded R-4's on my 7800 and have no problems with turf damage. The last tractor had turfs, and I think the R-4's are just as easy on the lawn, and cetainly much better for general work.

I use a RFM for mowing, and really like the convenience of on-off at the 3-point. It took a little getting used to, but after a couple mowing pattern changes, it works great. And when you're done, roll it off the back and get on with life.

We really like the 7800. We've made several modifications to it and call it our 7810. With interchangable parts from the 2910, we were able to add some features the 7800 lacked. Great tractor, wouldn't be without it.

The KK II 48" tiller is a pretty heavy tiller, a little over 600 lbs I think. That might be right at the capacity of the BX2230 3 pt hitch lift capacity.

I have been looking for a tiller for my subcut. Befco makes a 34" model that offsets, quoted $1300. Woods makes a 40" (GTC40) that Woods recommends for subcuts, quoted $1250 and $1200. Woods also has a 52" model (GTC52), quoted $1289. The Woods rep I spoke to said you could run the 52" model on a subcut but it may struggle on land that has never been tilled before. I believe Bush Hog makes a 36" model for subcuts and cuts, it was the most expensive at $1400.

Everyone has given you good advice so far. Cover your butt is the key. When I lived in Washington state, neighbor let a friend put a horse in their field. There was a stake sticking out of some old concrete hidden by the tall grass. The horse ripped open it's belly on it. Killed the horse.

I have a friend who had one of his bulls bust out of a fence. Totalled the Honda that hit the bull (doing well over 55 mph, car that is) and almost killed the driver. 2 other cars were damaged when they came upon the accident. That was a bad one but he had insurance.

So listen the other guys and be thorough in covering your butt. Accidents do happen.

16.1K for the TLB + 60" deck (plus 0/36 financing) would be a buy in my book. I have a number of quotes, and 16.7K seems to be the best so far.

You are nearby in PA. Can you share your dealer info?

If I was setting up a dedicated(seasonal)snow blower and a dedicated summer mower I would:

1) Get turf tires or retrofit truck radial mud&snow tires with studs. They would do better in both applications.

2) Mount the blower on the front especially if I was operating in hilly terrain and wanted to stay on good terms with my neck and back muscles.

3) With the blower on the front, it is much easier and cheaper to ballast the rear end (about 700 pounds should do). You can just drop the ballast for summer mowing. A properly ballasted rear end will provide the maximum traction available with carefully selected tires.

I don't know much about New Hollands since in our area the CaseIH version is more popular because of the dealers. I understand they are pretty much the same tractor. I was recently looking at them and my dealers also suggested to go from the 35 to 40 because of more power and that the 4 cylinder is quieter. If doing allot of loader work, I'd get the optional joystick controller.

In the hydro versions the tractor comes with a 2 range system that has an electric downshift/upshift function making it 4 ranges. I usually downshift when hitting a big pile of dirt. That would be handy on the loader joystick, rather than trying to hit the button on the right fender while also running the loader.

Spartan, don't know where in Michigan you live but Frankenmuth and Reese both have good CaseIH dealerships with lots of inventory. Both have always treated me fair and have good service departments. That is a big farming area and their mechanics would add rear hydraulics or whatever.

I'm still not sold on the loader design which sticks out way in front of the tractor.

I agree.

For years I took every chance I could to get out on a jobsite and climb on a machine. When one young employee finally questioned why I would want to leave an air conditioned office to go out on a machine in the heat & sun to work, my answer was simple. Because I'm the boss and I can.

After I was forced into a retirement of sorts, I bought a tractor for home for the very same reason.

Now that I'm back to working a bit, and have started a new business, I still take my 'breaks' on the tractor whenever I get the chance.

Pole barn is 30� x 40� set on 16� of compacted runner crush located in Upstate New York. Pad is 38� x 48�. Excavation work was done last fall. Building pad is approximately 12� above grade. Pole barn was put up in December 2004. Looking to pour 5� of 4000 psi fibermesh for floor. Contractor�s post hole digger failed during construction, so a small backhoe was used to set posts. Dirt was mixed in with the runner crush by contractor and spread over the floor area. Now, looking to cleanup and level the floor area and spread more runner crush before pouring floor. Based on the way that the splashboards are installed, overhead door and people door, we will have to remove/level 1� of mixed runner crush and dirt below bottom of the splashboard to get a 5� pour. Looking to get as much dirt removed as possible and refilled with new runner crush. Once all is done, we will compact again with a power tamper. <br>

Main concern is that frost will be able to get under concrete and lift/crack the floor in the late fall/winter/spring. Splashboard sits on top of pad. When digging below splashboard (1� for 5� pour) you can now see outside under splashboard. Considering digging out the entire outside perimeter of the building around the splashboards, filling with topsoil, hand tamping and then covering with runner crush and hand tamping again. <br>

Thanks Art. I'm probably looking for something a little newer, maybe a little more HP, plus I need the MMM. If someone trades in a nice 7510 or similar, that would pique my interest.

Thanks again....It's a long season and I'm patient as "upgrading" is not nearly as urgent as the first machine.

The 4wd front end is not designed to handle the additional stress imposed by reversed rims, but it makes no difference to the 2wd. You should be OK up front. If you were not aware, there are four different rear wheel spacings available to you, from a narrow 900cm to a wide 1020cm. It's not very clear in the Jinma manual, but you'll find it under "Adjustment of the Rear Wheel Tread"

I hope some of the old guard can answer the question as I'm curious myself. Typically, a hinged steel guard will follow the highest land point. So debris can escape while a chain guard conforms to the ground better. I'd also think the hinged steel guard might snag if you backed up where a chain guard would allow you to back up.

I hope someone with experience can tell me if I'm right or not. I'd like to know. Just finished taxes so not sure how the mind is working.

Chris it would depend on your lawn as to the time difference. I do like the smallest tractor with the largest deck to try and tame the trim work time. Ferris has been with Brigg's for a while now! I'd fire your rep!

The Bh75 is an awesome hoe with the frame work for the four point hook-up built to be out of the way and super strong. The price seems like it is pretty good as there is some work to put the sub-frame onto the tractorto mount the hoe to.. This unit looses no ground clearence from the original tractors clearence when the hoeis installed.
