I think temperature can affect the residual pressure too. Drop the FEL and relieve the pressure on a cold day and wait for a warm day to put it back on and you will have the same problem.

I fooled around with ways to relieve the pressure, including pressing the fitting on a hard surface, rigging up screw clamps, etc, and decided it was just to dangerous.

Now I get a couple of wrenches and loosen a coupling until the fluid weeps out and then tighten it back up and connect it to the tractor.

That keeps it out of my eyes, off my clothes and keeps me out of the E.R.

Great info guys. I appreciate it. I have to go try to work a price. He started at 16000 which I thought was way out of line but recently came down to around 13000 and I know there is still room. The owner is moving south to a condo from a 7 acre horse farm. I know he is getting ready to cut it loose cheap soon. I am hoping to get it for the 10-11K range unless someone beats me to it.

It looks like a nice machine but you don't see to many of them around here in CT.

If they were properly maintained those hours are nothing at all.

Some of my machines (see picture # 6) do that many hours a year, EVERY year.

As Art mentioned, they're just nicely broken in, that's all.

If you think of hours on a tractor in terms of mileage on a vehicle, 1000 hours at an average speed of 45 mph would only be 45,00 miles. If it was properly maintained would you be concerned about a pickup with 45k on the clock?

Thanks for the response JAZAK5. Versatility is what I'm looking for since I will use the same tractor for mowing and box blade work. I just wanted to hear from someone that has actually used the 7 series backhoe. The Terramite packs a lot of punch for its size and if the 7 series hoe will do nearly the same job, I'll be happy. To what model tractor do you have the hoe attached? Is the subframe an add on extra or does it come with the 7 series hoe? Any comment on the 4WD JD790 w/ FEL/backhoe combination?

I have to agree with the others regarding the Landscape Architect. I work with them frequently b/c our local planning boards often require us (as civil engineers) to submit Landscape Plans prepared by a LA. It really doesn't guarantee that you'll get what you want. I would just go to a reputable nursery and have one of their guys come out and make some suggestions. They will have a much better grasp on what plants will do well with your specific conditions (soil and climate). And because they will most likley be selling you the plants, they have a vested interest in making sure they spec species that will thrive.

Also, regarding your investment... I think you'll do very well if real estate trends continue as they have in that area for years. My brother in law owned a similar plot in Cold Creek Canyon, outside of Denver/Boulder. He sold it 5 years after purchase and I believe almost doubled his $$. He now lives in Boulder at the base of the Flat Irons and has watched that property grow in value as well.

Wow!!! First time I've seen anyone complain about the $20 charge. Don't you think you've already saved much more than $20 by getting other peoples actual experience concerning the specific product your researching? I bought my first tractor before joining (payed membership) this forum. I talked to several people that owned tractors and most of them only knew about the one tractor they owned for many years so info was a little outdated and not as valuable as info I have gained from this board/forum. None of the dealers seemed to be real communicators either. I'm sure they knew about their product but it had to be drug out of them and I wasn't sure what to drag. Anyway, good luck with your purchase.

Seems like a 10' would be a bit large for the pto HP your producing. I would think an 8' would be about the size you would be after.

Since gators are not hydrostatic units the fluid you are putting in is only for lubrication for the trans. assy. Super UDT is a little lighter than Hy Guard in constituency. I would say that it would probably be OK. but There is always that chance. If you do not want to spend the money on Hy guard I would go with a universal hyd. fluid or even regular 10w30 motor oil.

You are probably a better mechanic, but was the shaft worn any? I am trying to replace my seals again. The last ones lasted about 5 yrs. The best that I remember was the housing of mine is starting to get egg shaped. Shims and replacement of shaft are the only answers that I have gotten from my dealer.<br>
You do have to drive the load shaft all the way out of the tractor to get to the seals don't you?

It will vary quite a bit by geographic location and the name on the machine. Smaller areas away from big cities...

I would think based on our service calls: $1.50 a mile (round trip) to come out and $50-$75 or so an hour.

Depending on the company they can also tack on hazaradous waste disposal, cleaning supplies. Caterpillar is the worst for a multi-tude of various add ons and the highest price per travel mile and per hour, they go so far as to charge for hand cleaner.

As Beagle said it's not rocket science but the new electronics over hydraulic systems, transmissions and fuel systems necessiate dealer service.

Call around ask your dealer for a spring quote for the service.

Hey kwschumm-

I'm looking around for PTO driven chippers for my 42 hp diesel tractor. I see you initially wanted to chip less than 4", since larger than that could be firewood. My sentiments exactly. Now I see you have a 12" machine, and the Jinma was not enough for 'your' needs. So, did your needs change to larger size, or is the Jinma 6 unable to handle 4-5 inch stock?

I would be chipping Doug fir, maple, Cedar or Alder. Would you recommend the Jinma? I have a dealer not too far from here...

I had Starband for a few years because it was the only way I could get highspeed internet in my rural area. I dropped it once Cable Modems were available because of cost.

It worked pretty well and was alot faster than dial-up, but it was really expensive. Cable was half the cost. Look at the monthly cost, the equipment cost, and any cost you might have to pay to run wires.

The thing about satellite is that it's designed to be superfast for sending info TO you. When you have to send info back to the net (running a web server, playing an interactive game, uploading to the net), it's much slower. Because of the slower upload speeds you also can't do realtime multiplayer games well (this is called latency -- the delay in getting groups of information back and forth to you). This isn't the end of the world unless you (1) live for realtime games, eg. Doom (2) plan on hosting your own fast web site locally It does work VERY nice for downloading software and music and such.

Technically in my opinion, any of these can be considered "broadband" as they are all significantly faster than dial-up and are always on.

Some of the providers try to limit what you can do. Most of these limits are easy to circumvent. For example I can run a Web server on my home computer even know my cable internet provider says it's not allowed.

I priced a hydrostat, it is generally 600 to 1,000 cheaper for gear drive. Iam also not sure which is better, seems to be personal preference. I have to admit I'm kinda scared of the hydro simply because of the expense if something did go wrong over the long haul.

I have the 1072, probably just an older model. I consider it just right for my 4300. I certainly would not want one with less steel. I consider a blade that swivels and tilts a minimum. It is nice to have one that offsets too but the woods/frontier 1072 does not. My rhino blade does all 3.

I just bought a 1996 Gator 4x2 with a manual dump. It is mechanically fine. Looks decent for a 9 year old utility vehicle. Does anyone know the "problem" areas of these that I should focus on? I plan on keeping it. It runs great. What do you run in the transmission? It says to use only the JD fluid. What is the general replacement for this? I think I got this thing pretty cheap, I paid $1,000 for it - the owner sold his house and was moving soon so he needed it sold. What a cool machine. I had to have it!

I don't believe in the tube for fluid. A locust thorn, nail, or other lovely hole is bad enough with fluid but at least you can put the leak up and plug the tire. With a tube it is a disaster. Any one who has had a long stretch of good luck with a tube has lucked out of a leak.

Hey guys, new to the board here. I am in the process of moving to 31 acres; upgrading from my current 5 acres. I currently have a JD 650 and 67 loader and I don't think that this will be enough tractor for 31 acres and 12 horses. I plan to use the machine everyday for stall cleaning and paddock cleaning as welll as grding my drive way and plowing snow. I have talked to my local dealer and he is saying i need a 3320. I like the dealer, just hesitant to completely trust them so I am here to look for your guys input. I think he may be right on the size but he is giving me a price of $23,000 for a 3320 HST tractor, R4 tires with 330CX loader with 72" bucket and pallet forks. Is this a good price? What have you guys paid for your machines? Also what can I expect to get for a 1985 JD 650 and 67 loader with about 650 hours on it? Sorry for the long post, just kinda overwhelmed with all the options in the compact tractor market. I really apreciate the help and thanks in advance. <br>
