They did the same thing in Grand Forks, ND after the big flood. But the government kept the land and turned it into a nice public park. I look at it this way, the flood insurance program is run by the government. Granted, they take in money from the insurance payments, but a big flood easily overcomes that. So the tax payer gets stuck for the repairs. So if tax dollars go to remove people from a flood prone area, then in the long run, we might be saving money by buying them out.

I haven't done a cost analysis, but I know it sounds logical to some people. I don't understand buying a home in an area known to flood. Just down the road from me is a place that is in a spot of land next to a creek that floods every spring. They tore down teh shack that was on the place and built a really nice looking house. In spring, the creek flooded again. House was built up so it didn't flood, but they couldn't cross the driveway and the shop was under 4 feet of water. So the shop is worthless. They put it up for sale, but recently took it off the market. No buyers. Wonder why...

I don't have any experience with your model tractor, but perhaps something has came loose in the linkage. Does it do the same in reverse? Does it make any unusual noise? Frank.

I might finally get some time to get in some practice welding tomorrow. Thinking a bit about what to use for practice, with a mind toward building up to welding new ends on a couple of hydraulic cylinders for my TNT project (three ball pin sockets, and one large clevis). <br>

I've got a lot of 1/8" sheet steel from some scrap equipment cabinets. I've also got some 3/8" plate and 3/8" x 4" x 4" angle stock. Some old 5/8" foundation "J" bolts, a couple odds and ends like an old worn forged clevis, etc. I've also got a bit of 4" x 4" x 1/4" box tubing, but I'd like to save most of that for real projects and not burn it up in practice.<br>

Is it easier to begin with big stuff so you can work the puddle more slowly, or would it be easier to work with some of the 1/8" that I have the most of?<br>

I've got a couple big chunks of aluminum an inch thick or more, a 22' disk, and a 16" x 24" platform that I was thinking might make a decent work surface for some small pieces?<br>

The rod I bought is 7018 1/8", and 6011 3/32", but of course I can get something else, that's just what I happened to get. Given what I have to work with, what seems like a good fit?<br>

In general; clean the surfaces bright with a wire wheel, stripping off paint and rust? Cut bevels for thick stuff? For larger joints, tack weld pieces together and then work a bead a little bit at a time from opposite directions to minimize "creep" of the joint from thermal expansion? Clean off the slag of each layer before laying on another bead?<br>

A friend said that in his college welding class, the teacher had them weld together two pieces of 4" angle stock, making four of the six sides of a cube, and then lay on layer after layer of weld beads till they had a 4" cube made of nothing but layer upon layer of weld beads framed by the angle stock. Then they took a band saw and cut them in half and were graded on the uniformity and density of penetration with no voids. Seemed like a pretty good exercise. <br>

Oh, my welder is a Miller Thuderbolt 225A AC/DC, and I've got a good fat 50A circuit with solid 240VAC (branch circuit coming from a 400AMP service!), should be plenty of power.<br>

And I also have a Hypertherm Powermax600 20-40 amp plasma cutter to cut pieces and patterns out. I am going to be using the gouging tip to remove some welds to get the 3/8" angle stock loose from a large plate. Also going to use the plasma to cut the existing ends off of the hydraulic cylinders mentioned above.<br>

I was thinking that I could use the J-bolts to simulate welding ends on the hydraulic cylinder rods. Maybe weld it to a big plumbing fitting or something...<br>

Given all this that has been rattling around in my head all week, looking forward to a weekend to get a first crack at it, any advice beyond "Just do it!"?

I'm not one for visibly displaying a firearm unless it's neccessary (ie they've crossed onto my property and I feel threatened), but concealed with just a friendly 'what you up to' from a distance would be the ticket. The firearm is 'just in case'. I'm of the camp that you don't even 'show' a weapon until you're committed to using it if the situation goes there.

I would have dogs on my property, and Im a big believer that unless someone is specifically after you, dogs will discourage most all of those from the darker side of society. And it's sad, but even in rural america, tall fences have become a neccesity these days.

I've lived next to a psyco neighbor before, and I can attest that situation definitely 'sucks'. You really feel at a loss as to what to do.

For me, it's important to put things in perspective though. For as the scriptures say, "Do not fear man, who can only kill the body, but fear God, who can destroy the soul"

The moral of that story is, that like it or not we are vulnerable creatures, but you can't live in fear (of man). If you do, you wont have a life worth living

LOL They have not got any better in the last 19 years??? I bought some of them for my house trailer on the land 18 yrs ago. They used the things for dancing I think caues they definatley were not bothered by the sound back then either>

The sad thing is that they think that all these movies they make and all these tv shows the make represent the typical american life/family. In reverse that may eventually be true in that they affect our children and cause them to take on some of their bad behavior, but hollywood is really full of a lot of really sick, spoiled, rich people, who have no perspective at all.

They also seem to consider that whole 'red' section of the country as 'fly over' states. Full of people who are ignorant, stupid, and backwards. Not worth their time.

Pretty arrogant bunch, IMO.

I was thinking the tractor frame may have a ledge some place where you could weld a lip on the weights. (or possibly more mounting holes. You could then use two holes as short studs for support on your first weight, the other weights could have a lip going back to the adjacent weight) Even through you may have grade 8 bolts, tractors are subject to allota bouncing and shaking when going over rough terrain, etc.

I bought the tractor to maintain ~ 3 acres. It had 600 hours on it and is in fine shape for an 11 year old piece of equipment.
Although a gear tractor, I don't find this to be am impedance for the work I do. In fact, I prefer gears (but I don't do much loader work other the snow plowing).
The 670 has an 18 HP (16.5 HP at the PTO) Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel engine which is quite torquey, considering the displacement. It's a very tough smaller tractor. I use a 6' back blade for snow plowing. The 3PH doesn't complain at all about the weight of either the back blade of Befco finishing mower. The gear spacing is quite adequate to meet my needs (of course, my needs are 1st and 2nd low range...I rarely use higher gears and never use high range).
This tractor has a single stage clutch. This does not allow the PTO driven implements to run when the clutch is depressed. In retrospect, I'd rather have a dual stage (to allow the PTO to drive when I'm changing gears). The tractor is also a bit light (I've no ballast other then what ever is hitched to the three point and the FEL. On more then one relatively light snow, the front wheels have come off the ground while plowing with the FEL.
The FEL works well. I do see the advantage of having a toothed bar on the bucket. Mine doesn't have one (yet) and the tractor tends to ride up a pile of snow, rather then digging in. The FEL bucket (in "float") woirks really nice for pulling snow away from the house, or back off the road when I'm doing the snow thing.
I'd buy this tractor again. I expect to use it for at least 5 years....at least! If a choice between one with a single stage or dual stage clutch, I'd definitely grab the dual stage, all other things being equal.

You might get lucky and find a BX deck, but I'm sure used ones are few and far between. My vote is for a rear finish mower. They're not as manuverable as a MMM, but they go on and off arguably easier and used ones will be much more plentiful.

BTW, I don't mean for my above comments to degress into a MMM vs. RFM argument. The only real point is that a RFM will be easier to find on the used market.

Looks like a reasonable deal. I paid $15,700 for B7800f, mid pto, R4's filled, LA402 FEL, with two hats, in November of 2003. I also had a trade-in and new that it affected the price.

My tracor has 1420 hrs. It is a 1999 that I bought used last May. We built a new home last year and I purchased it to do landscaping, snow removal, and mowing. I dont have a mower yet, hoping to get one in the spring. I purchased an adjoining property this winter so now we will have 5 acres total to mow. I have done alot of work with it thus far and have alot more to do. Another reason I bought this unit was that it has a Curtis Soft Cab on it. We live on the top of the hill and the wind really blows in the winter. The cab makes a huge difference when clearing snow (I just use the loader to plow with). When I took the tractor out of the garage after I hooked the light up, it was dark and it was really nice to see when backing up!!
My tractor is in pretty good shape. I bought it from a New Holland Dealer. It appears it was neglected somewhat on minor items. I have replaced grease fittings, filters, etc. but it will work perfect for me. I hope to post some pictures soon. Thanks again for the help.

To be Certified is a great accomplishment in its self. I've been bugging the heck out of welders around here and not one of them is Certified! I'll be happy just to be able to weld some attachments for my Tractor and things around Home. It is almost impossible for me find a welder that wants to do small jobs nd I don't blame them. If I ever learn to weld I might be able to help out, but I won't hold my breath.

Being that I have absolutely nothing better to do since I have been off work, I have kept my drive (the black topped part 120' and the last 50' is 3 1/2 cars wide right down to the black top with the ole shovel and hand blower! My wife thinks I am doing it for her!LOL
