This will be my first tractor purchase & part of me prescribes to the notion that you can never buy too big a tractor but... What size (model) should I look at for 5 acres wooded. I will be clearing a lot of trees initially and then bush hog cutting and maybe a finish mower so loader will be a real perk. I obviously would prefer not to spend an arm or leg and used is ok with me. (BX2300, B7500, L3710?)

Can you run the brush hog without the FEL in place for balance/ballast?

I fooled around with loaded tires too and now use steel as ballast.

Amerequip's website used to explicitly state that they OEMed/made backhoes for Great Bend, Bush Hog and John Deere in the OEM section. It now just states "Amerequip currently works with major OEM companies." Guess some corporate types did like the fact that they weren't making the equipment being sold on their machines exposed out there... Not sure if those 3 still OEM from Amerequip or not, but the backhoe designs look remarkably similar.<br>

Yeah. I kinda thought the deal was too sweet and easy. I had my reservations about a loader on 2 wheel drive for another $3500. I'll keep on looking. Thanks for the help.

Almost two years ago I bought a B-1550 hydro with a 54" deck. It had around 200-220 hours on it and was in excellent shape for $7500.00. I've since bought a 5' rear blade, 4' tiller and a 4' brush cutter and this tractor has been excellent. I now have 630 hours on it with little problems. It sounds like a good deal to me.

By the way, at the risk of causing a riot after having read this thread, I once had a licensed electrician set up a backfeed for my house where I could plug in a portable generator. A relative of mine is a professional engineer who has built a power plant and puts up commercial buildings. He backfeeds his house. Convincing people to buy a transfer switch for $500 when professionals around us simply "turn off the main" is difficult. <br>

Also - it is true that transfer switches do just that. They just simply ensure that the main is turned off before the generator input is turned on. You take the risk that you could mentally slip and forget to turn off the main when you avoid purchasing a transfer switch.

There is a left hand reverser that you don't need the clutch to work. It basically is a gear transmission that is shifted by hyraulics. It isn't like the old 4020's that you maybe familier with as the Kubota is locked into a gear so the power loss is less.

Hi,

The HPX that we're having trouble starting is the gasoline version.

We have tried adding dry gas and it's been maintained according to the manual.

We will definitely be checking these on a more regular basis from now on. THe machine only has about 80 hours on it but early on had a rear seal leak that was returned to the dealership for repair. Because of our poor experience with this dealer and numerous stories about how others in our area have had problems, we wondered if they failed to tighten the nuts up properly. The nail polish is a great idea.

Let me put you at a little bit of ease. Who ever is doing your repair has gone though all training and yours will 9 out of 10 will not be the first that he has done. The majority of the time involved is removing and installing the operator's platform. The actual splitting of the tractor and putting back together only takes about 6 hours. that includes pulling the guts putting in the beefed up brake AND PTO clutch pack. To also say you are going to get a PTO clutch that is much stronger than the existing. Yes it will be at least two days but it is worth it and it will cost you nothing.

The New Holland loader for that model, the 7308, is as good as it gets for going on and off easily and quickly. Like the international 2250 mount-o-matic and John deere's compact models. My partner even showed his wife how to do it.

What you can comfortably afford is the only way to go! Our kids have to realize that just because Bobbie-Sue had a wedding that was 40K and Jessica had one that dad paid for that was 21K does not mean that they have to have one of that magnitude. Every family has different income levels. I will not spend more than 3K. Fact is, that would be the wedding gift also. We are doing OK but I still want to be able to do OK in retirement LOL

They look nice enough, but I don't know if the double auger is worth the price. I have little doubt that this one will not get a bid at that price. From what I have seen, a blower is more limited by how much snow can fit in the actual blower rotor, not how much the auger can move in. Progress is limited by speed/size of 2nd stage of blower which is limited by HP. Perhaps if you have really hard packed chunky snow to blow.

Thanks Beagle! Of course, the only thing standing in the way of me getting another tractor is the slight, small problem of MONEY!! HA! But the good thing about not having millions is you shop & investigate & make a good decision

The top link bracket on the tractor itself. From what I have been able get from the owners manual for a 4672 and 4690 BH, the bracket ON THE tractor gets replaced with a "reinforced" bracket. I have part no.s for the older series tractors, but not for the 2910 or the 7800. That is why I will need ro do some digging to get numbers for the 2910/7800. I have an old manual from the BH.

It makes sense, especially if the actual mounting to the tractor is "enhanced", for the lack of a better word. I'm not so worried about the top link itself, it is having the bracket tear off the cylinder case the worries me. From the parts manual, it appears that the reinforced bracket has additional mounting holes into the top of the case to help take the horizontal loads from the BH.

Any other information about this would be welcomed. This is as far as I've gotten so far.

Murf, thanks for that idea. I think I've got some PVC pipe out in the shop. I think it's a good idea. They do like to crawl into good hiding places.

Reminds me of the time I took a tour of Catapillar's engine factory in Lafayette, IN. They make engiens fo all sizes there including tyhos big daddies with cylinder bores you can crawl into. That's a serious engine!

Not really. The Erskine is about 2 grand more than the front mount New Holland. Not to mention a real pain in the a$$ to put on and off.
