There is a LOT (one heck of a lot) of posts on the JD 4000 series tire/axle scuffing problem. I'm an experienced owner/user and I have provided turf care with both the 55 and 70 series machines up to the 1070. None of these machines would tear up turf (except in 4WD) when used at a reasonable speed - even when turned at maximum lock! None of these machines would leave rubber marks on concrete (except in 4WD) either! I recently took delivery of a JD 4400 HST and it definately has a steering geometry/axle geometry problem. I am working with my dealer to rectify the problem and I fully expect to have NO steering problem when this is over. If I am not satisfied then I will pursue other alternatives until the problem is rectified. Other than the steering problem, I love my JD 4400!!

The first question you must ask yourself is what type of work do you need to do? Is it 100 percent mowing, or will other stuff come up that you will need the tractor for, like back blade or boxblade work, digging post holes,pulling a wagon or manure spreader, etc. etc. I have posted on my fascination for the Steiner before - they are beautiful machines. For me, however, I absolutely needed a 3 point hitch (catagoty 1, not the smaller catagory 0 available on machines like the Steiner and the larger JD garden tractors) and the attendant rear pto. To give up the 3 point is to give up a tremendous amount of versatilty for projects you might not even know today that you will end up needing to do. Let the board know what you want to accomplish, and you will get plenty of advice.

I bought a cheapy tiller from a discount farm supply (QT Farm and Country). You get what you pay for. If I did it again, I would buy a name brand, Howard, JD, Landpride (heavy duty series), Bushhog. BTW, Howard makes JD's tillers.

Could anyone tell me where I could find an operator's manual for a <br>S700-D shibaura tractor. This tractor was bought used and there was<br>not a manual with it. The tractor runs great. I use a 4' cutter and<br>a 4' box blade behind it. I would like to know the spacifics about<br>the tractor. My e-mail address is DMLJLL@aol.com. Well we took delivery on our TC18 in Feb. It came with a 60" Midmount Rear discharge multching mower and 5 ft rear blade. Tractor is loaded with 4 wheel drive and hydrostatic drive. Walked away with it for 11,900. Although it took us about 6 months to get it.

I have an International 234 compact tractor. These tractors are fairly light and seem to run out of traction long before horsepower. I looked for cast iron rear wheel weights but could not find any used ones (new ones would be too costly). I made rear wheel weights from cement. My rear wheels are solid center with holes to bolt on cast weights. Here's what I did.

1. Installed three anchor bolts through the hubs with the ends that get cemented in facing out.

2. I lined the hub with plastic sheet to keep the cement from sticking to the hub.

3. I made a ring to fit around the hub (where it meets the tire) from aluminum roof flashing. This was about 6 inches high. Since the wheel would fill with cement before I had enough weight it was necessary to have the cement stick out past the wheel thus the 6 inch high ring.

4. Filled each wheel with 2 bags of cement .. total weight per wheel is about 160 pounds.

5. After the cement cured for a week I removed the nuts and washers from the inside of the wheel and removed the hardened cement weights.

6. I also used an anchor bolt set sideways so I could attach a eye bolt to lift the weights when mounting and dismounting.

These have been in use for 2 years with no problems. Total cost was $8.00 each.

The price quoted for a new head sounds correct. Lowe's Tractor at (812)663-8928 should be able to supply you a reconditioned used head for half that price.

I've had a Sear's 18HP lawn and garden tractor for 12+ years. No complaints. I use it to push snow and mow 5+ acres. Cannot seem to kill the damned thing.

I recently switched the snow plowing work to a L3710 Kubota w/ a 78" snow blower, but I will never mow the lawn with a 6000 pound tractor...

Say what you like about the lawn trash tractors - I'll keep mine until it dies.

Have had a reply from Kobuta Canada and they have given some good suggestion also. They suggest to increase the drag shoe and to add weight to the front. I will try this next spring and hope it works. Thanks for the help. Gerald

Hi again! I was in a neighboring town yesterday, stopped at the JD dealership that supposedly specializes in the compacts and garden tractors. Asked him if he has heard anything lately about what JD is doing to fix the scuffing. He was not aware of any fix, no updates at all. I find this hard to believe that 2 dealers around me know nothing about any fixes for the scuffing! My dealer believed that mine was the only one with the problem, even though they have sold them to the golf courses recently! I have a feeling that this may be like pulling teeth to get something done!! The other dealer was going to call the main store (they have 3 dealerships) to see if they have heard anything and give me a call on Monday. Wondering what the answer is going to be........
