lucerne, that's a generous offer. I really don't know what all kind of Christmas trees would grow out here. Mostly in this area it's Noble and Douglas firs, with some Grands. We had some balsam firs at our last house but they were sort of a low and slow growing variety, almost a small shrub. We actually don't grow Christmas trees for sale, instead we have a lot of very big trees that will eventually be logged. The Nobles we have were planted as Christmas trees long before we bought the place and now they are way too big for most uses. Nobles make lousy firewood and are too punky for building lumber so once they get big they're not worth much. They are dying off 10-15 per year anyway. Apparently their tap roots are much deeper than Douglas firs and they drill down into the clay muck and drown. We will be replacing them all with more Doug firs and probably some Western Red Cedars. This year we sold about 10,000 lbs. of Noble greens to a guy who resells them to makers of Christmas wreaths. The smell of Nobles is wonderful too, much nicer than Doug firs.

Most snakes are pretty defensive but not really clever.

A long thin dowel or stick of some form with a bit of a ball of soft material or another mouse trap works well, especially if you can see them.

Push it right up to him and poke him in the nose a few times. Generally they will not take thios for long and will snap and bite at the end of the rod, when they do pull them out with one hand and whack em' a good one with something in the other hand.

If you were closer I'd loan you Deputy Dog, so far he's got about a 25:0 record with snakes.

Yes, absolutely. There are several ways we do it depending on the situation.

In our temporary work yards we use 55 gallon drums, since they are all equipped with 2 standard sized 'bung' fittings it is very easy to do. All 'standard' drums, regardless of size, have one 2" NPS and one 3/4" NPS opening.

We use the steel 2" plug and drill a hole through it, then braze in a piece of 1" � black pipe. The pipe has the bottom cut into a V-shape and extends right to the bottom of the drum. We then thread a 90� elbow (with two female threads) onto the top of the pipe. A 'standard' piece of fuel hose then threads into the elbow and a fuel nozzle (like on a gas pump) completes the first piece.

The second plug, the 3/4" one is drilled and has a pipe brazed into it as well. This one gets only an air quick-connect fitting. We then use an air line equipped with a regulator to step the pressure down to a safe level and maintain that pressure as the fuel leaves the barrel.

The air pressure can be run (depending on how full the barrel is) at anything above 5 psi. The variance is the total height you need the fuel to climb to, and the speed at which you want it to accomplish this.

If, for instance, you set the drum up on a stand a few feet above grade, say at truck bed height so you merely have to 'roll out the barrel', then basically all you have to do is get the fuel going up over the top of the drum, from there it is basically siphoning itself out.

A friend of mine does it this way, he built basically a small loading ramp out of railway timbers and soil, the top of which is the same height as the bed of his pickup. Things can then just be rolled directly into or out of a pickup truck. He buys his diesel in barrels, they load with a forklift and he just rolls them out and leaves them in the corner of the ramp.

We also have several truck-mounted tanks that are left in pickups. They are used transport truck tanks. Since they are already equipped with openings in the bottom of them we just make the openings larger and thread them to accept a 1" fuel hose. Any small machine shop or good welding shop can do this for you. In this case you only need a little air since the fuel is already above the box floor height at least.

A word of caution here though. If you use this design, be sure to make a place to 'park' the fuel nozzle that is high enough that it cannot siphon accidentally if there is a leak. It is also good practice to drain the hose back into the barrel after each use to prevent this or discourage 'borrowing' of your fuel by others.

Correct that: I finally got out my calipers and went outside and measured the thickness just to be sure, and it turns out that it measured .380", or 3/8" with some paint on it I guess, rather than the 1/4" I was thinking it was. I guess seeing that large a piece of plate made it look thinner. That means it is more like 1500 pounds, even less likely I am going to take it anywhere.

So I can:
1) Get some gas to use with my torches and cut it up, probably end up with a lot of belt sander and grinder slag clean-up, but I would have some working welding capability and experience cutting. What would I lose about a 1/2" of material in the cut? ? $ ? ten or twelve hours behind a torch, another couple days clean-up work?
2) I can hire someone to come out and plasma cut it. $200?
3) Rent a plasma cutter and do it myself (can they be rented?), learn a skill. ??? $200 cost?
4) Buy a $1400 dollar plasma cutter and do it myself, and then sell the plasma cutter lightly used. $200 net cost?
5) Cut it into manageable pieces and take it to someone to cut the disks with either waterjet or plasma. $250 cost?

Getting ready to change all "break in" fluids on a 2210. I've got the correct hydraulic spin-on filter from JD.. is there a good aftermarket hydraulic fluid that has the same specs as the JD brand? I don't want to botch my warrantee...

I'm getting ready to do the first oil change on my 2210, too. Bumping this up in case anyone else has comments on oil and filters to use. FWIW, I'm in the mid-Atlantic area (WV) so I need to have the correct viscosity for low temps during winter. Any thoughts?

Last year the Guy across the highway cleared about 40acres of trees ranging in size, in 3-5 days using a Large CAT, maybe a D8. Piled the debris in rows and it is actually breaking down pretty quick. Considering the time, and wear and tear on your equiptment, I would just hire someone that has experiance and equiptment for the job.

Well since I don't have a cable system, I am going to try a combination of suggestions. Coat with lithium grease, stick an oilpan heater to the base of the Control and cover the Controls. If that works then I will do that, if it doesn't, I will do the Relief valve trick. It doesn't surprise me that something isn't going to work, as the temp's have been hovering in the -40 to -50 degree celcius range. Good old reliable winter Winnipeg weather

I agree wholeheartedly the RTV needs an electric locking front diff. I'm tired of getting out and putting the 2'x10's with the 1' angle iron cross pieces under both front tires just to get over a little stump or whatever. When I could just flip a switch like on the Yamaha Rino. I think it is more of a price point issue than an engineering issue. We get snow over ice here a lot this time of year and I find I just park the 'bota more often than not.

If you buy a Kubota tractor here in Canada now this is what it will come to you filled with.

They ship tractors crated & dry, they are only filled with fluids during the set-up & PDI process.

Pricing takes a little math, we can get it retail, in either 4 & 20 litre containers, that is the equivalent of 0.945 & 4.725 US gallons respectively, they retail (at my dealer, with the Orange label) for C$15.95 & C$78.95 respectively, that would be ~ US$12.76 & US$63.16 (at 1:1.25 exchange).

The local Petro-Canada distributor gave me a 'ballpark' price of C$12.75 & C$62.75 (US$10.20 & US$50.20) but said that was without any kind of volume discount or terms.

Bear in mind though, this stuff IS now "Super UDT", at least up here. I'm going to do a changeover of the fluid in my own machine and see what if any difference it makes, it's due for a fluid change soon anyways.

As mentioned earlier, black smoke from a diesel under load is fuel not being "cooked" as well as it should. If you run it heavy and are producing black smoke, let it run at around 1200 rpm until the exhaust is clear to cook off any excess fuel.

Blue smoke and white smoke are trouble signs. Black smoke is un-cooked fule and should be run clear with out any future problems. Black smoke without working the engine hard is a sign of fuel system problems. As long as you can run it clear pretty quickly after working the engine, should be fine.

A seven thousand GVW lb rating is barely enough as you are pushing the 5000 to 5500 lbs of the unit. Go with an 18 foot trailer to allow room to balance well for your truck.

The first thing I would suggest would be to take some soil samples to your county extension agent to have analyized. This should tell you exactly with nutrients are missing from the soil and you can add what is needed. Then you can work on the seed bed and type grass.
