I certainly am a fan of the newer Kubs and JDs, too. I have seen very few of the Korean makes, and none with Hydro. (That Kioti CK30 is very rare, apparently.) I have little doubt that LG makes a nice machine, and 34 and 39 hp hydros are going to be very popular if they sell for much less than the L3130 or the JD4320.

OB1, can you tell me what you sell the 3440HST with loader for in CT? How about the LG backhoe...have you seen one? Who makes it an how much is that?

Thanks so much for the info/heads up. I haven't checked my fuses, so I'll do that tonight. I have put on new terminals and should have the Optima battery delivered in the next couple of days. Hopefully that will do the trick.

I just bought a used JD 455 from a dealer. It is a 1995 with 315 hours on it. I do not know the person that owned it but was told by the dealer he had less then a acre of ground and wanted to move up to a 2210 and that was the only reason for getting rid of the 455. It looks like it was well taken care of, the machine looks just like new. <br>

When I start it up there is a big puff of black smoke out of the exhaust. While running I can put my glove by the exhaust and pick up a slight hint of black soot on my glove but exhaust looks ok I can not realty see anything. I do not get this with my JD 4115 but that only has 30 hours on it.<br>

Is this normal to have black smoke and to be able to pick up soot on a glove too? I do not have much experience with diesel engines. The dealer says it is normal with the 455.<br>

Thanx for the reply, I am assuming the BX23 is a 23HP machine. And small enough to mow with in tight spots. How is it for power, does it have enough to push snow and dirt?<br>

Here is what I did with my BX 23 within the first 50 Hours<br>
FEL<br>
Moved 3 small piles of dirt.<br>
Moved another pile of dirt 6 feet wide, 44 feet long 3 to 4 feet high.<br>
Dug out an 8'x6'' drain pipe replaced it and added another 13 foot to it.<br>
Installed another 23 feet of 6'' pipe in the other end of the ditch.<br>
Spread 3 eight ton truck loads of slag.<br>
Filled in a large dip at the end of my driveway.<br>
Dug up and removed about 15 feet of an old cement side walk.<br>
Pushed over 8 or 10 trees that were from 2 inches to 8 inches in diameter.<br>
Moved the trees out of the way.<br>
Back filled the holes where the trees were.<br>

I have a BX23 that works well for the 4 acres I have. <br>
1*The small size allows it to fit in some tight places, yet the backhoe and FEL have sufficient power to do everything that I have needed thus far. <br>
2*It may take a little longer than a L series machine, yet the BX23 still gets the work done. <br>

1*If you get a larger tractor you will have to hire out jobs you can't get it to or where there isn't room to operate the larger tractor. <br>
The problem here is it's pretty hard to find contractors with the smaller equipment.<br>
They all have the big stuff like yours that already won't work.<br>
On the other hand if you have the smaller tractor you may need to bring in a larger tractor for certain projects. In this case finding the larger tractor to hire is no big deal because that's what all the excavation contractors have.<br>
Here is just one example of where you can't use a bigger tractor but where the BX23 really shines.<br>
I have 3200 square feet of dirt floor in 2 buildings to fill in smooth out and bring up to grade in preparation to pour the cement floors. You can't get a bigger tractor in there due to the door way and ceiling hight. Even if you could get it in them the tractor loader and hoe would be to long to maneuver around in there.<br>

Wouldn't it feel great having to do all this by hand with a wheel borrow mattock & shovel while your parked big ole tractor loader and hoe just sets there taunting you???<br>

Do not use dirt in concrete. Dirt asorbs moisture which will expand when frozen and crack the concrete. Also, the finish coat will flake off and the concrete in general will crack and cumble quite quickly. Always use clean sand and agregate.

Ardician, I made these last year so that I could pile logs after skidding them out. They were made from 3" x 5" rectangular steel with 1/4" thick walls. The steel cost about $70 (I happened to find some used pieces). I paid $125 for the quick attach plate but they could probably be made much cheaper. I suppose with welding rods and cutoff blades and nuts & bolts I have $250 and two long evenings of work into them. <br>

You're right, they don't need any additional hydraulics which made them attractive. The trick to them working is that they point down when the tips are at ground level and still have a little downward angle at the highest point of the pile. This allows the logs to roll off when you release them. It works much better than forks because you don't have to get underneith the log to lift it plus you can clamp down on them to move and pile.<br>

It's in pic #11. It's just drawn from memory, but the idea is there. I made a full size cardboard cutout that I taped to the loader to get the geometry right before making full size drawings on poster board.<br>

Denwood, thanks for the info. I used to visit Quarryville regularly, I used to be a Ford rep, and stopped at Stoner Wade Ford (still there?). I bought 10 of these yesterday, including 3 of the Frasers, and was planning to plant them near my house, which is a south facing slope...I might have to re-think that? I have north facing slope on the property, but out of site from my house, and the deer would make quick meals out of them. I don't know much about the Norway Spruce, which are the nicest of the bunch. Anyone know about their care, and how tall they might get, and how fast?

While I dug into the books and the 1020-1520-2020 are all on the right side of the transmission case. Engine numbers are embossed on the right side of the engine block.

Probably your best shot on a used one is in dairy or other heavy livestock aeria dealers. Most all the livestock industry has gone to skid loaders so there might be one that's been traded in. Most dealers now have a website listing their used equipment. Just click on the "Where to Buy" bar on the main JD website. Best of luck. Frank.

my la211 with the front grill guard (spend the money - it's worth it) and the valve was $2658 plus tax picked up, installed and delivered back in 2000 from the previous owner. He had the purchase order in the docs that came with my machine.

Do not forget rear ballast or the loader is useless for anything but mulch. I made a 3 point block of cement out of a metal garbage can, a length of steel rod, 2 eye bolts for the top link and several bags of redimix. It works well and comes right off when you don't need it. These little machines are very unstable with a good load and no rear weight.

On some tractors the rear wheels are two piece, center and rim, where the center bolts to the rim there sometimes is a zig zag square block piece of steel welded on the rim with the hole through it. See if you are mounted to the inside or out side of this bracket. If you are on the outside, move the center plate to the inside of the bracket. For the front wheels on some tractors you can take the left front, flip it and put it on the right front and the other on the other side. By turning the rims backwards they extend out further. I know this worked on my Kubota,don't know about JD but I think they are the same. If you are using a bucket,boxblade or other tools you might not want your tires wider then the tool.

To Bvance, most of what was said, directly relates to this thread you started. Speed on the internet directly relates to the speed one can pull down a website, You may have a high speed pipe running from your home, but the upstream your provider has could get clogged, therefore some sites like this one can show performance issues that not everyone can see, hence the discussion of T1's and others. I know everyone has seen cable internet commercials and how they brag about outperforming dialup and DSL, and most people fall for it and wonder why sites become slow. So in closing, there is a 99% chance that nothing at all was wrong with this site, and instead you experienced a network bottleneck somewhere between the server this site resides on and your PC where you were viewing it.

That depends on lots of factors. How much time do you have. Do you have an alternate drive to use. How deep is the topsoil. Where do you want the topsoil to end up when you're done? Just for something to use as a guide line 400 ft. X 12ft. wide X 1.5 ft. deep will equal about 20-25 tandems of soil, that sounds like a lot of dirt, but last summer I did about the same thing as you're talking about over about a 10 day part time span with the 4410/430FEL/box scraper with scarifier teeth. Allways start at the lower end of a drive doing such a thing as a rainy spell can turn you're project into a mudhole unless you're working you're way up the hill so the water drains away form where you're working. I'd pull three or four boxes of soil loose then just back over them and use the FEL to carry it out the end where I stockpiled it. Frank.

We used one of those commercially with good success as far a spreading for several years. For the short amount of use you will do, the cleanup is quite a pain. We were very thorough with hot water pressure washer and oiled it up with diesel to help with rust. It still rusted badly over time.
