We do a lot of bush hogging in the course of doing our work, especially early on, a lot of the property we are working on is former farms that have been dormant for several years by the time we get to them.

One of the best tricks we have come up with for protecting the underside is using the FEL itself. We put the bottom of the bucket flat to the ground and set it up about a foot off the ground. Any brush, limbs, fence wire rolls or rocks get hit by the bucket before the tractor gets there.

The exhaust was VERY simple to put on. The trickiest part is to get the connection at the turbo, it is way in the back. I had a friend help me but about all he did was hand me stuff so I didn't have to climb out from under the truck everytime I needed something.

As for cold weather starting, it was going to be VERY cold here this morning so I decided top try a little experiment. I unplugged the block heater, but left the battery blankets on and put a small, 1 amp trickle charger on the truck.

When I went out this morning for coffee with the boys the truck lit right up, it made some pretty horrendous noises for the first few minutes, but it did start alright.

At 7:30am it was -32� Celsius which is -26� Farenheit, when you include the wind chill factor they said it was about -45� Celsius or about -49� Farenheit.

I suspect it might have been different if not for the warm, fully charged batteries.

For work boots, I agree with Beagle that Wolverine makes a really good workboot. If you get the model that has a Duroshock sole, you can feel the cushion compression on every step when standing or walking on concrete or hard surfaces. Mine have lasted for years.<br>

For Hunting and general outdoor work in the cold months, I go with Rockies-DeerstalkerII. 1200 Grams of insulation and Vibram sole for traction.<br>

I like Danner and Merrell boots for hiking and general knocking around. For washing vehicles and being in mud, I use "Muck Boots" they're full rubber outside with a light foam insulated inside.<br>

I've also have a pair of RedWing/Irish Setter work boots that seem OK but nothing like the DuroShock Wolverines.

Even without the weighted tires you're overweight. The trailer must weigh 1000 lbs so you would be at the weight limit with just the tractor. I've got the same setup without loaded tires and my 7000 lb utility trailer handles the weight nicely. I can nicely balance the load when the FEL is a few inches from the front trailer rail.

I have to agree with "it depends on the rental yard".. I went and looked at a 48 in Rhode Island,,, It was an 03 model and looked worse than the 65 Ford 5000 I got rid of... The Ford 5K had about 8 owners in its lifetime and was beat beyond any usefull purpose.. The 48 I looked at was a hundred times worse than the old Ford. For all practical purpose, that dealer who took it on trade will probably use it for parts, To rebuild all that was wrong, would be cheaper to buy a new one... I am sure this is not the norm, or at least I hope it is not., Most rental yards should do, nad maintain their fleets a lot better than what I looked at..

Thanks for the info Art. I have been looking for a missing sub-frame. As long as the top link bracket can take that kind of abuse, I won't keep looking for a sub-frame that doesn't exist. Thanks again.

Unless your yard is "Pool Table Flat", I'd stick with the 60 in. deck. Our yard just isn't flat enough for a wide deck, we drove a Deere demo with a wide (I think 70 or 72 in.)deck. It left a pretty uneven scalped surface so we got a 54in. on a 345 tractor and it's worked well. Frank.

I would certainly consider local first, because at some point, assuming you own it long enough it will require work and that's why going with the major players (Kubota, NH, Deere, Case, etc.,) would be my picks over other brands.

Just a thought about ease of obtaining parts. NH is a large Co. with many pdc's. I don't know about availability of Farm Trac parts. <br>
By the way I am from the old school I prefer the shuttle shift,hydro does have a couple of drawbacks.

We all know that the standard practice now a days it to keep your soil from getting compacted. Well there is a impliment called a cultipacker that was made just for that. If you can find one (and where you are it will be tough) It is a perfect impliment for food plotters to get seed to soil contact. Since many of us dont have or want to have a grain drill this workd fine. Of course you dont have to have it by anymeans. I dont. Check out my pics and you will see what you can do with limited equipment. After doing your soil test and prepairing your ground, spread your seed. Depending on what seed you are planting will depend on how you go about burrying it. The seeds that need only 1/4 - 1/2 inch cover I had pulled a bed box spring (burned off the covering) over it. Last year the soil was a bit wet so I chanced it and tilted my disk so the back was the only ones touching and lightly disked it
in. If you had a cultipacker now would be the time to use it. If you had one you may only be able to pack it if your soil is light.
Go to that web sight I gave you and read as many old posts as you can. They have a wealth of info on it!

It s a new tractor only 2 years old
It s been outside and let sit so I thought it was first the battery
I had problems getting it to start
It seemed at first that there was a load on it preventing the battery from turning it over then finally it fired up
The next day I was back to the same thing but it now seems that there is no load on the battery when starting
It does not even turn over and the panel lights don t dim during a start attempt so I m ruling out a battery problem
It has been sitting and it is cold and snow covered but I do keep it plugged in
I ll call the dealer tomorrow I need it to blow my 1200 foot lane

Several who use their loader for plowing have discussed a blot on "slit" piece of pipe over the cutting edge of the bucket. I haven't done this since I use a blade to plow, but you can probably find some discussion about it in the archives. It also has the advantage of keeping the bucket from gouging the gravel.

Yes there is a clutch pedal. <br>

Basically to change direction forward to reverse or vise versa you only have to slow down and move your shuttle lever to the desired direction with out the clutch pedal.<br>
The tractor will then slowly engage in that direction.<br>

With the manual shuttle you have to come to a complete stop then change direction.<br>
<br>
Either one you still have to clutch between gears and ranges. The gears are synchronized so you can shift on the fly but you still have to stop to switch ranges.<br>

How it works is through clutch packs one for forward and on for reverse.

Interesting discussion,
I use a wireless converter to a point about a mile away, then a relay to a tower approx 8 miles away and then inputed to a T1 line (probably installed by Alexander G Bell and his helper what's his name).

My point is this site is about as quick as any other to me!

I had the exact same problem with a pole horse run-in I just built. To make it blend in with the neighborhood I covered it with vinyl.

There is no way the purlins on a pole structure will line up with vinyl. What I did was just nail it with the normal kind of nails. On the inside I knocked all the nails down flat against the plywood.
