hehe Well i can agree that if you want to plug in two things, go ahead and warm the oil as long as it is not a dipstick type but I assumed we were talking one vs. the other, in which case a coolant heater is the way to go, or at least it has been in every industrial diesel (and gas) engine I've ever seen in my 25+ years here in Maine.

The coolant warmth will actually circulate through the engine but that warm oil is staying in the pan, until it is suddenly thrust into a stone-cold block on startup. And of course the oil near the heater will be much warmer than the oil, say in the other corner of the pan abd this will reduce the life of the oil and it's additives IMO.

I agree it would be nice to have warm oil as well but between the two I personally will warm the block.

I guess people who "boycott" Wal-Mart do not understand that they started just like everyone else did, as a small store with one location/idea, just like Microsoft did.
The fact that KMart and other former retail giants (Sears usued to be the biggest retailer...what happened??) did not wake up and smell the coffee when Wal-Mart had say...100 stores and growing is their own problem.
And let's not forget this is the American way as well as the law of nature. The one with the cheaper product who just does business better all the way around will prosper. The weak will die and the strong will survive, and eat the weak one if needed. If Sears/Kmart/others could have crushed Wal-Mart and drove them out when they were still small, you know damn well they would have with no regrets. If Joe sells beans for $1 a can and Larry moves in and sells a similar can for .98 with a free can opener, Joe better do something, right?
Do I want mom and pop to go under? No. Do I want to import even one item from anywhere? No. But it is impossible at this point in the world not to and due to our own greed as a collective people that has made it this way. If none of this stuff was imported, we would be paying $150 for that toaster made 100% in the USA because GE or whoever would have to pay for Joe Six-pack's $25/hr salary/insurance/bonus/401k/health/dental/sick days/vacation/back injury/workman's comp/etc/etc/etc

The bottom line is this..our system is the best on earth, but it does have flaws. One of those flaws is that the big fish will always get bigger..until a stronger fish brings them down. If you don't like that idea then move to a communist country where everybody is equal - equally forced to be the same (except of course for the leaders who prosper)

ps Please dont hit me with the import thing...retailers have been getting goods from wherever they could get them cheapest since before any of us were born. Would they do this if people didn't want cheaper stuff regardless of quality? No.

pps If we had leaders with backbone there would be a tariff on every imported good to bring it equal to our goods. Then it would be who makes things better, not cheaper and I think we a would all benefit.

Around here the preferred method of setting poles in the ground for buildings was to set them into stone cairns.

Basically they would dig a hole a little deeper and larger around than the pole, then put one large flat stone in the bottom of the hole and some very small stones (gravel today) on top and stand the pole on that, then backfill around the pole with small stones, gravel and sand.

The idea was to create an area of very good drainage around the pole. If the pole stays dry it won't rot.

It would never fly today, but it used to VERY common for people to dispose of their used motor oil by pouring it around the base of all the poles, it soaked into the wood and saturated the soil making them water-proof.

My 4300 has r-4's filled with calcium, (no I didn't fill them and never would have with fluid, especially calcium), but with the 61" heavy duty bucket, I can't scoop enough to get tippy. A heaping bucket of wet 2A modified is just fine. I have the JD ballast box filled with concrete (It came that way) and have never used it. Personally, since r-4's have no real flex anyway, I would have filled them with foam for weight, Not as heavy as water but you also fill to the top, unlike water. Wheel weights would be my next choice since changing weight box to implement is a pain, and it is nice to have a shorter machine for tight spaces

same reason big rigs can easily last 1,000,000 miles and a pickup is luck to hit 250,000, they are not built as heavy. I am sure the demo was impressive but with some experiece, you can overcome the stalling issue if that is what you are worried about. Personally, I like the fact that when I push the hydro pedal, it moves linkages and valves, not relying in electronics to interpret my foot and tell the machine. Honestly if it were Japanese, or had been used for 10 years with great success, I would be more trusting.

I just built a weight box for my BX and I went through the same thing you are trying to figure.<br>
I found that you need to put the top pin hole in line vertically with the bottom pins, and 15" above. This makes my weight box go up vertically like it should.<br>

That is true about the additives in the coolent. I often recommend several of the additives to bring the coolent back up to it's original. The coolent normally doesn't loose it's cold protection just the additives wear out.

It's hard to tell on a 20year old tractor what the condition is and the hours that may be on the unit. They normally go for a low in rough condition for about 4500 and the prices go up to about 8500.

This is the thread that JParker mentioned and DRankin identified that covers the "Dr.Murf" innovation -- a split pipe on the front of the FEL for snow work. It addresses the "shoe" question that JOEHONDA had for his new BX23. So much good discussion that it deserves to be re-introduced.
