"I would love to have a truck like this."

The good thing is it's out there. One guy's dream is another guy's mistake. Isn't the marketplace a great, well oiled machine? Could you imaging living in a place where some bureaucrat decided which truck or which tractor we could buy?

Voltage is like water, there needs to be a difference to induce motion.

If the PS is putting out 12v. and the battery has 12v. it will not charge until the battery drops well below that point. If you put a meter on a battery charger you will find that it puts out 14++ volts.

They sell very compact trickle chargers that can be permanenty installed on a vehicle that are also very inexpensive, a good one is probably $20 or less in most places.

Ruining a good battery will cost you a LOT more than that.

The problem with burning corn stalks is two-fold.

First, while as a food source stalks are good, they are low in density which means you need far more volume-wise to get the same number of BTU's.

Secondly, in order to dry the stalks to a low enough humidity level to make them suitable you would expend more energy than you would recover by burning them afterwards.

They do make 'bio-fuel' stoves, including one I know very intimately, that will burn corn, but again, you need vast amounts to get any real heat out of it.

The big outdoor models seem to work the best from a reliability point of view, but are expensive initially to setup.

I have seen some interesting hybrids though. A manufacturing shop I know of has an outdoor corn-fired boiler which uses a propane burner to light the corn when it needs to make heat and shuts down completely when not needed. The glycol mixture it heats is stored in a large underground tank that acts as a thermal reservoir, the burner only keeps the tank above a set temperature, the heat is extracted from it by floor loops and heat exchangers that give off a slow steady heat almost continuously. The burner is fed by a large hooper that stands next to it.

In a previous thread (November 2004 Thoughts) it was clear that this board like the country is sharply divided in its political views. I stayed away from the thread on purpose because I in many cases did not know what was fact or fiction. Both sides made many claims for thier guy and against the other. The one thing that cannot be disputed is that Bush was elected by a majority as well as many other republicans. The republicans have been gaining seats in the senate and house regularly in the past several elections. It seems the country is turning more conservative as of late. Just an observation.<br>
P.S. I also think the cartoons are in bad taste.

I lived in Phoenix for 25 years, worked on cars for a good percentage of that time and have never heard of this oil wash-down theory. Engines there seem to last as long as anywhere else (as long as the cooling system is kept in working order) and summertime temps there are often in the 110-115 degree range. We got more than 200k miles out of some Buick gas engines in the 60s and 70s with no oil related problems and little oil consumption. I'm skeptical, but it sure makes for an interesting discussion.

Ck20, nice tractor, but as stated heavier than the 7510, and less horsepower. You may want to look at the CK25 for a better power to weight ratio. Make sure you drive them both, and get to know the dealer!!

The 1/4" valve on the Kubota's is a compromise. If you aren't going to do a lot of grading work, it shouldn't be an issue.

I usually chill out for 3 weeks... after that I have a list of things that has built up from the year. We clear brush, Some small tree work, Plow snow, service & /or fix landscape equipment that has broken during the season that we didnt have time to deal with in the busy days, Organize the shop & try to do as much snowmobiling in as possible.

Get a set of skid shoes for your blade. They are very helpful on a gravel drive. Otherwise, you can turn the blade around and push with the back side. The weight of the blade should keep it from riding up over the snow. Of course, be careful about using the diff lock in 4WD. Attempting to turn while the diff is locked can cause major geartrain damage!

First off I'm not an engineer, so this is just something I did about 25 yrs ago and it seems to have worked out fine so far. I added section on an existing building that I wanted to heat without any open flame. It's a stud frame structure with steel siding 6 in. roll insulation and sheetrock. the ceiling has about a foot of blown in insulation. I had investigated different types of non flame heat, what looked best were radiant cove heaters placed on the wall about a foot down from the ceiling. The manufacturer of the heaters recommended that the concreet floor be on top of 3 inch foam board insulation and this would give the concreet floor itself the ability to act as heat sink storing heat from the radiant heaters. This system has worked out real well, in fact I installed three heater units and found that no more than two were ever needed so I took one down and used it in another installation. Far as floor strength, it was just standard strength mix (6 in. thick) with re-bar. It's had some mighty heavy machines on it for all those years and I don't see any signs of stress cracking so far, plus it's been an amazingly economical building to heat. I do realize that in theory my floor should have bent, broken and had to have been replaced by now because of the lack of firm support by the foam, but in the real world it's just as good today as 25 yrs. ago. Just my experience. Frank.

Don't forget the strainer behind the rear wheel. This is very important. You will not believe the amount of mtal shavings you will find in there. Be sure to clean it and be careful as it is pretty fragile. Use the super UDT and good oil. It is a little more money but on a small machine like a bx it doesn't break the bank. Jim

I also asked about turning up the horse power. A simple chip can turn up a Cummins 30+% safely. How about just a 10% boost for a Yanmar. That would give 4300 owners the same power as a 4400, they are the same tractor, just different engines. He said no problem for 15%. These engines in power unit applications have been lasting 20,000 hours. More is possible but will risk tractor more.

this is pertaining to something said a while ago...but still in this forum...sears selling groceries...some of them do. There is one at gurnee mills that sells some dry goods and frozen stuff...like turkeys (and of course all the goods to fry, bake, grill, whatever you do with them is your business.)

My company used to build trailers and truck bodies, and I have to agree with MadReferee here, building any trailer, let alone a dump trailer is not exactly an entry level project for a weekend warrior (no offence intended).

There is also the public safety aspect of it if the trailer is for 'over the highway' service. A trailer can quickly become a deadly weapon if a couple of welds let go while it's loaded and in motion.

MIG welders just make the situation worse, it's REALLY easy to make a very pretty but structurally useless weld with a MIG unit. Stick welders aren't far behind.

There is a reason the law in most places requires trailers be built by certified welders and manufacturers.

In most areas there are certified welders who will come out and weld for you if you put all the pieces together and do the 'grunt' work, but I doubt you'd save much over a comparable unit anyways. The 'bulk price' savings manufacturers get from suppliers usually exceeds the profit margin. When you buy all the parts for full retail price you may spend more just in parts than you could buy the finished product.
