Talk to the nice folks at Carter & Carter. I bought my top & tilt kit from my JD dealer, but if I had wanted HTL only I would have bought it from C&C. If you want to maintain full use of your FEL you'll need an electric valve kit. Not real complicated but will be a few bucks.

The biggest factor in keeping the price of wood pellets low is the fact that they are manufactured as a 'value-added' product. In other words, the pellets are not manufactured from trees harvested for that purpose.

They are made with scrap wood and sawdust which are by-products from the manufacture of other things, principally lumber.

This is a good deal for the producer, especially if it's a lumber company since they are now getting revenue from their waste. If the price climbs too high the demand will fall off and it will go back to being waste. This doesn't mean they don't edge the price up a little when oil or other heat sources go up, but overall it has stayed pretty steady.

In the 10 years that my sister has been buying pellets she says the cost has only gone up by 15%. Even the cost of firewood has gone up far more than that around here.

There is only one way I know of, patience.

The subtle grinding you are hearing is because the gears are still spinning on one side but not the other, if you wait a few seconds before trying to engage the PTO it will give the gears time to slow or stop.

The other thing that helps is to engage the PTO with the engine at idle. With the tractor in neutral, and before you step on the clutch, bring the engine to a slowe idle, then step on the clutch, wait a moment, then engage the PTO, this will ensure the gears are turning as slow as possible, if at all. That should minimize the problem.

What types of attachments/implements are you using? The dealer may not have caught the problem if the leak is on an attachment that wasn't on the tractor at the time of service. Do you have any attachments that may drain fluid when not on the tractor, requiring the tractor to re-charge the system everytime you use that attachment? Just a few things to think about besides the tractor systems. Look on your implements for dirt build-up. Hydraulic oil and dirt make a pretty sticky paste.

You're right, there is another board which has a strong PT group and if any of you are interested in buying a PT, there is a ton of reading material which can help.

I have owned 4 CUTs, one Massey, Ventrac 4000, Ventrac 4200 and now a brand new PT 425.

I loved the Massey, but in Lancaster County, PA, there are too many slopes to mow on. After the 3rd "almost" roll over, I was afraid to drive it any more.

The Ventrac 4000 was a great concept, great slope mower, but bad tractor, poor quality and needed constant attention.

The Ventrac 4200 was everything that I wanted the 4000 to be, powerful reliable, easy to work on, just great. The only thing that I wished I had was a tractor that had the FEL capability of my Massey, and the slope mowing capability of my 4200!

Enter the PT 425. It is compact, articulated, well built, and a very simple design which is easy to work on.

Plus, for what I sold my Ventrac with a deck and scoop, I got the PT with the following:

Let me say this. The Ventrac/Striners are better mowers and can mow on steeper slopes. I would NEVER mow on a 25-30 degree slope with a PT, but I have with the Ventrac. I just and to go up and down the slope now instead of parallel.

The Ventrac/Steiners are poor FEL workers and do not have the lift capability of the PTs.

The only PTs that I would compare to Ventrac is the 422/425. They have other VERY large and capable slope mowers, but I can�t afford that much money for a home machine.

The Ventrac/Steiners have a unique spring based automatic weight transfer system which helps you maintain traction on slopes, you have to do that manually with the PT.

The PT is MUCH more versatile and better built than the Ventrac/Steiners.

The FEL work and low cost of the attachments from PT made the decision for me. The attachments are all EXTREMELY heavily made and will hold up to TONS of hours of use. This is why I made my decision to sell my Ventrac and buy a PT.

If all I was doing was mowing, the Ventrac/Steiner wins, no competition, but that is not the case for me.

The magnetic type has several advantages... For one, it can be taken on and off easily if you install a quick disconnect electrical connection. Secondly, it will "break away" if you run into something inadvertently. Third, it can be repositioned/re-aimed more easily than a fixed mount light. However, a fixed mount system will probably hold its aim better.

Andyfr: Massey Ferguson used to be the worlds largest tractor manufacturer, and may still be. I can't say anything bad about their products simply because I've personally never seen a Massey compact. There used to be two or three quite large Massey dealerships in my aeria, but it seemes that after the hard times in agriculture of the early 80's that they went out of business and never came back. I'm totally guessing on this, but I'd say that because of the close proximity of top notch dealerships that Deere and Kubota would be a tie and Ford-NH a close third so far as popularity here. Massey simply has ben in business too long to be building poor equipment, if they were they would have been out of the picture years ago. So it goes back to my old song and dance of having a good relationship with a top notch dealership,. If that's your situation and you like the Massey then by all means buy it, Orange, Green and Blue need a bit of competition to keep them on their toes.. Enjoy whatever you buy. Frank.

Haven't looked lately but normally Kubota has an extra lead near the light harness for the turn signals on the rear fenders.

It will be interesting to see what he finds! Years ago many of the heads they worked with for diesels were close to gas heads in design where today they have a more unique head design to the diesel engine.

The rubber cap probably shrank a little over time for whatever reason, heat, age, reaction to oil, etc. It loosened and fell out. You can clean the surfaces, thoroughly removing all traces of oil. Coat the edge of the seal with RTV silicone sealant and reinstall. You might consider a new rubber cap which I can provide. Call me at 800-609-5110. The transmission takes 3.17 gallons of gear oil. If you have a FEL installed substitute Universal Tractor Fluid for gear oil. Fill till oil flows out the level plug on right side of transmission just behind the differential lock pedal. I never found one worthwhile. I looked at one made by buhler, but would be around 3K. I then found out I wouldn't be able to use my belly mower with the loader - so got a small Kabota w/loader and kept the 650 for mowing.

I do have a lawn vacuum pto attachment (sucks from grass discharge to tow behind wagon).

I finally got my transfer switch installed and an opprotunity to test my generator. It started the deep well pump without a hitch and it looks like it could run the whole house without problems.

It is a good feeling to have it available.

There can be many reasons for the engine to overheat, the most common is probably not cleaning out the radiator screen after mowing. It has been several years since I ran one but I don't remember the pedals being hard to push. The fact that the bucket was repaired is a good indicator of its hard use, possible causing wear on the front axle and driveline.

I believe that my lines are from the fell also they are the hard ones. I was going to email my dealer since they may have seen this a 100 times but thought this was just as easy and just as good a place to ask. Some one has seen this before I am sure its not too uncommon. I have 30 hours or so on it.
