You should be fine to leave it in four wheel drive as long as you are not on firm ground such as pavement. The front wheels are design to slip as they turn faster than the rear and if you get in surface that is hard it places load on the front drive train.

As to the pest and gauges...yep. Probably cut wire and maybe blown fuse. Mice will get in the worst of places. Depending on your air intake they will also clog those. I think you will find the new plows harder to pull. However might for some plows are just easier to put the angle of the wings and such.

Agree with the previous post. Another way to control the mice/rats is cats and depending on what else is around a good idea. If say in hay barn or such a cat there is not bad. Of course if you leave the rodents alone they will bring their own control, snakes.

If your pines are 10 years old you are what about 5 years from them being large enough for pulp or fence post? If the trees are planted in rows and as thick as they normally do (at least here) think you will have a thinning crop in about 5 years. If that is correct by the time you were to get the stumps out the ground you would have another year gone so about four years of growing time to have first tree harvest. Ask around for a true forester, one who can help you plan the forest and not just sell the trees who can look at the trees and give you some real ideas. Now if it was not planted in trees and there is one here and two in another 50 feet totally different issue.

Skip, if you stand to the side of the tree and not up hill or down hill the two methods should work.

A different thought here, have you talked with the phone company on this. At least here sometimes a utility company will take down a tree to prevent possible damage to their lines. If they don't do that they may at least help with info on height and how to cable it for safety.

The JD weighs a 1,000 more and that is a negative? I don't know the JD but am very pleased with my two Kubotas. Bought one new and the other used.

However if I felt a tractor was abused would avoid it. Remember before buying my first Kubota JD was about first tractor I looked at and found just what I wanted in a used tractor with low hours. Only thing was for such a low amount of hours the tires were cut to pieces and made me nervous about it. Did not like the dealer's attitude as he would only discuss that tractor and no others.

Will each tractor serve your needs? IS one better suited than the other? Such as the transmissions how do they compare, is one synchronized the other not? One of the reasons I bought Kubota over JD was this at least in models I considered at JD was not at all and the Kubota was partly. How about hyd pump capacity and remotes if they will matter to you. Getting on and off the tractor and comfort on it. Are you able to talk to previous owner?

How about the pto, any difference there? Does one offer any advantage in the way you control the pto or the engine rpm for the pto rpm?

Lift arms and stabilizers, how do they compare. For me I do not like chain stabilizers, too much slop in them. Then they can be easier to hook up. Does one have telescoping lift arms to help with hook up and the other not? If so do they work?

How about parts in your area? Dealership for both about same?

If all that comes down to the same, which do your prefer for if you don't like it you will never be pleased with it. Personally I like the Orange very well. Here you see most commercial use to be the Kubota. Of course on the farms it is JD compared to Kubota but that is partly due to JD making tractors with more HP and such for the field.

I don't know the M5040DT but have a M6800 with a few more hours than you have there. One reason to the number of hours on Kubotas are many are bought by homeowners and thus not a lot of hours. Another point maybe is how much business has been off the last 3 or so years, many machines are sitting idle. However many are bought by commercial people who run them many hours. Think you will find they have a very good life.

Does it have more than two marks? As to the milky hyd fluid a good source for rain in there is split or missing boot around gear shift levers on that tractor.

Hiring might be smart if an reasonable option. Think you posted your equipment but did not find it quickly, so not pin point here.
If you have a single shank subsoiler use it first. Run it about every 12 to 18 inches and yes slow as a round is only covering 2 to 3 feet of width. But you will learn a lot about the field in doing so and is a good method to remove small stumps.

You don't tell why you think the tractor is too small, are tires spinning, stalls under load, front end is light?

If you have a disk, disk it as good as you can first to cut the roots. Don't plow as deep, only as deep as it will pull steady. That might only be the root mass you are having to split, that is okay, turn it up and let it dry and then if you have a disk cut that up and then plow again deeper. If no disk skip that and try plowing little deeper turning in the roots.

If you have already tried plowing shallow (2 to 6 inches)then remove one of the plows. Which one and how simple this will be depends on your plow. If it has a trail wheel then you may have to move that to the front plow and remove the rear plow, if no trail wheel you should be able to just remove rear plow. You may not have to remove the plow for hope it has a trip or shear bolt if not be sure you run with that slow also and suggest seat belt when plowing this the first time. Plows will stop tractor suddenly and operator will not, Not fun. If it has trip or shear bolt then try flipping the plow up and it might clear enough for you.

But let's begin at the beginning: setting up for this job. I agree with Dennis on the tractor.
Are you using 4 wheel drive and the front wheels are staying firm on the ground as the plows are not picking the front end so they are getting good traction. If not then add front weight.

You have the plows set up properly, so the points are pulling into the ground and you have the plows level side to side and front to rear. Front to rear set on flat ground and side to side you will have to in the field as you plow. The right side of the plow is higher than the left due to the right wheels running in the last furrow plowed. If set properly both plows will leave the dirt the same height and width. No doubt you are using plenty of throttle and right gear. Does the plows have coulters on them (disk in front of the plows to cut vegetation for the plow)if so are they working? Are the plow points in good shape, do they still have a point or they broke or worn blunt? Are the plows rusty, if so clean the rust off. Dirt does slide easier on clean metal than rusty one. Save your oil when you do maintenance for such as oiling the plows coating the wear parts while still clean metal.

Think you were also asking for suggestion on how to plow the field itself. I doubt you have roll over plows, is so doing a lot of type for no reason. For certain you want to plow the long way if possible. Have you ever used moldboard plows before? If not: you will need to begin in the middle or on the edges of the area. Here we normally do the middle and you want to plow a perfect straight line in the perfect middle. Then you drop your right wheel of the tractor in the furrow you just did as you plow back. The next trip back you have to hold the wheel without benefit of furrow but from there easy as you will always have a furrow. Some begin at the edge and plow from edge to middle. If you do so over time end up with low spot in middle of field. You do want to disk and plow in same direction to keep the land smoother for the tractor and not riding over speed bumps!It is good to disk at some angle to your plowing but not 90 degrees or you will not like yourself.

YP, Art would be great to chime in on this but think in the models the breaking is with they are not made by the same people. Think the size breaking of the blue might be smaller than what Case at least did have about 10 or so years back. No idea now.

I have a B2710 and a M6800. Other than a gear having a tooth to break off ($1500) totally pleased with mine. Had a friend who had a L series here yesterday and he said only brand for him. Being fair bout any brand could handle the light load the last three years, then I think of the pulling of loads of dirt the M has done and the conditions and maybe not.

Cruisecontrol: only on tractor with a HST. It is not like on a vehicle. On a HST you first select the range (the more the better) then RPM needed and then you vary the ground speed with the foot pedal for the HST. The more you depress it the faster the ground speed which does vary with range selection. A problem with HST is you must keep that pedal depressed to keep moving. Some people find that tiring. The other issue is if you are doing something such as using a sprayer or spreader and need to keep constant ground speed that can be tough unless if it totally depressed pedal. For those two needs you use the cruise control to hold the foot pedal in place much like the hand throttle does for the rpms of the engine. You are dealing with linkage on this and on our HST it works like a politician.

If you search here will find ideas on how to protect your tractor. Don't miss Murf's on storage container. Your question on insurance is tough to answer with no idea where you are as this is a State Law product you are looking for. As an insurance agent and not with any company I will mention here are my suggestions:
Talk with your homeowners company first. A lot will depend on how they consider a tractor. They might be able to cover it with an endorsement.
Talk with tractor dealership.
Farm Bureau does a fair job in at least my state.
Talk with an independent commercial Insurance Agency.
Call your State Department of Insurance and ask who is licensed to sell that coverage and then what companies have complaints that are legitimate against them.

Ask details. Ask how they determine the value if stolen or destroyed. You might find they value it so low the premium compared to risk you are willing to take the risk.

One thing I would not do is leave it parked where it could be pulled onto a roll back.
