One recommendation on D Rankin's suggestions. Try to cut it with band saw or chop saw to have straight edges to work with.

Another one, ask around for the local welding, machine shop that has one or two guys (normally, looking for a shop who can will do odd jobs) in it for such work. If you are using a tractor and equipment, odd thinks will happen. :-)

The creosote, should not be a health problem for the use. Might want to see about you meeting me on the delievery somewhere between SC and Iowa but maybe little further North. Might want to have a small TP renuion in them parts.

John when you have a screen open like this one to enter your message below the white part is some fields in blue (at least these are the colors on my screen). The top one is where you can enter the title such as in the case "screw drive tractor" and the one below is is a field to enter the link. The way you entered it here which is fine just requires it to be copied and paste to use it.

Ken, I would ask Toyota about the radiators. That really seems questionable.

Local toyota shop even though bought elsewhere has been very good on any service we have had done there. Think of the four toyotas in our family each has had been there for one thing or another and once a complaint on a pen stripe tape.

Brian, if you did not let the dealership know why thy lost you, he may be at next one you go to.

Gold fenders to me sounds like a big chain private label. Then could they have been painted?

If it was built in 73, how good of shape is the deck, unless a commercial model would think terrible. How about spindles and such. I agree with Hardwood. It is 36 years old.

If you want a FEL you probably should fine tractor with it due to price of buying new FEL. I have a B2710 with hydrostat and use it to mow a lot, both with RFM and Rough Cut. For those used really like the hydrostat trans. I also use it to spray with a good bit both in yards and fields. In fields don't like the hydro as keeping speed steady and setting it not that easy. For any stop and go or run fast and slow or backing up and then forward work I think you will really enjoy the hydrostate trans more than you might believe. Mine also has 4 whd and use it right often, even with mower as the tractor is so light if I get on damp sloop it helps to prevent spinning and damage in my MIL yard. :( Only second snow yesterday in last eight winters here. Why some areas got 4 inches. Our house might had 3/4 inch.

Was changing fluids and filters in my compact Kubota a few days ago. Ran air nozzle over what I thought was decently clean radiator when blowing trash out of the battery compartmnet. Was I suprised as what all blew out of the fins.

Don't miss air filter, clogged filter will also cause it to over heat and running in higher range than should for load did with mine before I got use to the hydrostat trans.

Cowboy, you may ought to check out renting or leasing what you need job by job. At least until you are sure what type of machine would best suit your needs.

A simple are they worth it on the Chianese brand here is simple...as Ann Bush has said..if you will buy the parts over the net or phone and do the work yourself MAYBE. There are plenty of about any other brand you want but not aware of a Chianese dealership within a hundred miles any direction. At least one with parts and shop.

When you hit a problem with service in the middle of a job and your machine is down for a month for parts the price you paid is very high.

I have not read ALL post here but often think of heavy equipment company I worked for. We used Cat, Cummins, Detroit and Deutz engines. All diesels. As to break in periods and oil used, really no idea what oil we used but know we did use the same in each engine regardless of brand or season. It came in tanker truck and stored with no lables. Sure hope the purchasing department knew what they were doing and have no doubt all engine companies gave their blessings on that oil.

What I do know if how those engines were treated. After probably an most an hour on them more like 30 minutes we took them and ran them at full rpm with throttle locked for at least 20 but more like 30 minutes testing all cicruits and operation of all parts. In the summer the transmission oil temp would climb to about 140 degrees if memory is correct just from the operation with it in neutral. Read, the hyd system got hot! The only load was the operation of the systems but that was very sufficient. Then repairs and leaks fixed. Then to load test site where the engine was rull at full throttle for 5 to 10 minutes and varing loads in between. But that full throttle run always made me wonder about the break in period and easy treatment we are suppose to give engines. There is no way there was never an engine rep in our plant to know that.

Oh, if you want full rpms on first fire up, had a detroit that had locked throttle and had it not been no breather was installed so cardboard over intake save it that baby was going to blow...the building was emptying and one cool headed engineer save it.

Saturday a week ago I change most fuilds on my two Kubota's. Glad I was sitting down when I figured total cost of right at $500. Filters and fluids. Have to pull the filter screen out of the hydrostat even after putting in new fluid as I missed that and if it is good will put that fluid back. Also have to change out front axle on 4 wheel drive.

Saturday went to excavator and did something never before for me...pulled off water seperator and had to let it sit in sunshine so the ice would come out! To those of you that have snow and sub freezing temps so much of the year, you have my sympthay. Hurricans are no so bad when compared to freezing temps for just two full days. Oh today, it may snow tonight but not likely (love those weather people) as it is shirt sleeve weather even for me!

KC, have read and watch this discussion with interest. We have a high water level hear, many elevated septic tanks and sewer lines. Hardwood (Frank) telling how they treat the light poles there is what they do here also. DOT does not use wooden post any longer for any signage but some are used with guard rails. Those post cut at angle, will notice many rot in the center. Saw one last night at convenience store used for ash tray. :)

The black fence post about 3 inches in diameter here don't last any more than about that 8 years and do rot right off at ground level. A few years ago had a good friend who worked for a sign company and he said they painted the full post EXCEPT the bottom for the water had to have a way out for it was impossible to seal the post. Sort of makes sense and that might be the thought and reason behind the pea gravel Murf mentioned. No idea. It would seem if you took a dry piece of wood that would absorb oil into it, that would help.

Best suggestion I have as you don't seem a lot of wooden fence post used even on pastures here any longer, find old wooden fence post in your area as the moisture and wood would likly be what you will also experience and ask those who put those in what type of treatment they use or used.

Wonder how freezing affects post rotting? It has to cause the wood fibers to open up some but the time of the year a post is frozen, can it rot? It would seem not. So if a post were to remain frozen for 3 months a year, would that increase the years it took to rot? Have no idea.

In Texas, don't you use loctus wood for post for it last so long?

You could also offer him to have it inspected by a shop.

Don't forget you are not doing him a favor if you don't allow him to save say $2,000 either. Understand the issue on no problems. Or you could sell it to him for the $8,000 price and hold $2,000 for a period of time to cover a repair if needed. You could offer a $2,000 limit warranty. That would be 25% of the selling price and to me on a 20 year old tractor is right fair.

dannw, I have a smaller Kubota with HST and did look at the video. There are some things about the HST PLUS I like and with no idea the extra cost would not want to say one way or the other on the cost verses the benefit but for my amount of use would not think it worth say $1,000 more. Then I don't have a FEL or tiller. I do use mine with the speed locked for spraying and have used with cultivators some but have found very little need to use the rear brakes for turning. I wonder if there is a electronic control delay in the system between front and reverse to protect the system with the ROCKER set up it has. Understand that is why they went to the spacing where you have to move your foot to give the system a split second between direction changes to prevent the shock of sudden changes. Not throwing off on the JD at all, but very pleased with mine that has HST.

One suggestion on the Kubota if you go that way, I have seen a few complaints on their FEL not sure if just a certain model or across the product line recently as to quality at least in appearance. I certainly would want to see THE machine before it left the dealership and give it a very careful look over for sloppy looking welds and bent metal on the FEL and it's arms.
