Joel, you posted the part below earlier and I assume "our farmers" you are talking are the large corp. you list as receiving all the (lets use the term you want to) HAND OUTS. It amazes me those corp. go to any "small town cafe" to eat. Not putting down small towns as my heart beats there. kt Now Frank I am on the bus.

The little cafe, on Main Street, is just as dependent on the farm income as my family is. But, when winter comes to North Dakota, our farmers head south to Yuma, Phoenix, Key West, etc.

Thank you for posting those pictures and my wife thought I got bogged!

I would think the plow would have to come off, certainly if you are lifting the front end as it would lower the plow into the dirt.

How about a neighbor farmer with a larger tractor or backhoe and a long chain. Very long chain or a heavy truck and winch? I suspect with you on muck dirt you need to make friends with one of those set ups. kt

since there are many tractors used in the dairy business and the life of those engines is very important...would not think discussing how the two topics would not relate.
As to the price of milk, I grew up with our own cows for beef and milk. Hand milking. Did not value that hand milking enoungh till my Dad died and left me at 16 to do it. Needless sure did miss fresh milk in a little while. The price of bottled water industry and profit is unreal. kt

How difficult would it be to drive or haul your tractor with the mower on it to your nearest tractor dealership or tractor supply company. That would make it much simple to be sure you have the proper shaft and length (very important, too short and it comes apart while running dangerous, too long and something gets jammed and probably damaged). If that is not an option, then stop by one and ask how to measure for shaft length.

If you do the measuring, attach the pto shaft to either the tractor or mower and with the test the fit with the mower fully lowered and fully raised and a couple of stops about half way between. The shaft should have the ability to push togehter some at each stop but also should not be about to pull apart. You should be able to feel that movement. kt

Ken, if the rental company is not able to tell you quickly ask for the model and manf or the boom and look up the specs on their web page. You should be able to find it.

The crane manf. company I worked for counted the boom length as the total length of the boom itself. That was not the working height. It did not take into account the amount lost to the angle nor did that take into account the gain of the height of the boom where it was mounted to the crane.

I congratulate you on being comfortable in one of those. I had to test operate some of them about 75 feet high and was not at ease at all. Units built for the US Air Force to wash planes and such. kt

I would guess this thread has become hijacked already but something I use to see (out of that work now) which many did not pay attention to is the proper wiring of a lamp or light fixture. The "live" part is the part of the center of the buld and not the outside base of the bulb. So simple but so often given no attention to. If wired backwards it is possible to touch 110 volts with some fixtures. Much like breaking just one leg of a 220 circuit. Stay safe. kt

One thing I will chime in on the 135, they sure were use a lot on tobacco here for years before all the multi row equipement and with the Ford 3000 probably used more in tobacco than any other models.

Yooperpete: sound like the same type of valve I have seen on Massey's that required the 3 pt arms to be fully raised to work. That is 100% raised, not almost fully but 100% fully raised. My brother has a much larger Massey with same set up. Amazed me to find as large as his it to be the same and that tractor is only 12 to 15 years old. It will limit you with some equipement. kt

Depending on your local market you may be able to find a major brand used for not that much more than a grey market tractor. If you are looking for used major brand check around, I found the price varied a lot in just a few miles. kt

Candoarms...read with interest your comment on selling the farm does not mean selling the land. I have never heard that. Be sure in my part of the world when a person sells the farm or bets the farm or losses the farm...the land is gone.<br>

Candoarms, I found the specs on the 125 but appreciate your input. I know the local dealership to some degree. The thing I find most interesting is Kobelo (think that is proper spelling) is what they have on local lot and they are also a New Hollard dealership. The dealership in North Charleston, Florence and Conway is the same people. I am about 15 miles from the Conway location. kt

Murf, have done the stump drilling as you said but did not use the chemical you mentioned. Too many years ago to remember if we used anything on the pine but the hardwoods used salt only to keep them from sprouting.

Art, I have not seen a M series with backhoe here but there are many of the B and L. Probably half of all in that size range here are Kubotas.

Candoarms, the barter system works well at times. I have a brother, friend each with TLB that is available for my use as SOON AS THEY get out the shop or back home or such. Have only be 3 years on one and 1 on the other. Did think of another friend with large excavator (if still working) sitting within 400 yards of where the work area is who may be open to swap with. The barter system is being lost sadly with the passing of the oldest generation. Those people really lived by it and here were very willing to loan to you because you would to them freely.

If this was true, then why do those lands not fly the Stars and Strips today? For at the end of the war, we had them if we had wanted them. There may have been some concern by Russia but very little as they would have been very please for us to traded our protecting (part of) Germany for those islands. kt

More details on your plans would be good. When you mention you need to "work 20 acres" what do you mean work and what will be on the land? If you mean to mow only that is one thing if when you mean "crop fields" you are in wrong type of tractor totally.

As to the price, I agree with Candoarms on that and his other comments on the size. kt

There is so much you need to know from what varieties will not only do well there but will sell. You can have a great crop but no buyers just by planting the wrong variety of the crop. There is a lot of produce sold in my area to locals and tourists (big tourist area, very big) and the variety sells the produce. A very sharp farmer here has 25 acres of a crop being advertised at �X� variety as that is the one asked for. I know very well it is not what he planted but it looks like it and is as close to that variety as there is. There are two big produce crops here there is a variety of each most people want and expect, neither has been planted in years. You will be surprised how much what people perceive is not true. You will also be surprised how the desire for a certain variety will can vary. You must know your market.<br>

Harvesting equipment is the most important equipment and the spacing or width of it drives all other equipment. As it seems you want to plant more than one kind of crop, but sure all crops will work with those row width. The more you vary row width the more wasted time on setting up equipment you will have. You will need more equipment than I see you asking about. Some you will need duplicates of. <br>

Be sure of your market. Then be sure of your market. It will not be what you think it will be unless you or friends control it. Find the farmers markets near you (I would visit two or more) and walk them listening and asking questions. You will hear what varieties people want, what does well and so forth. You will get a feel for what sells and what is not profitable. <br>

Planning the layout, access roads in it and such is very important.<br>
<br>
See you are planning on this part time for 3 or 4 years. Does your main job allow you to take off when you need to? When produce is ready it is ready. No waiting for the weekend to harvest or get to market. It can be ready today, rain tonight and be lost tomorrow. Is refrigeration required? What is expected in packing it? Will you need machines to wash it or clean it? <br>

If you will be having your own produce stand you want to sell more than you can grow as there is no way to sell produce and only the crop or two you have ready or the stand will not be stocked to keep people stopping. People driving by must be able to see the produce from their auto; they do not like normal stores. They want open air stands. If you are selling direct to the public watch price wars with your neighbors. Watch the way your package the product. If you are selling to the public be careful when saying per �bushel� or per �pound� unless you are measuring each one very carefully. Per pound normally requires certified scales. <br>
<br>
There is so much more you need to, no must know. Find one or two farmers who have retired or just the kind hearted type who will share with you. Any coffee or such you buy for them will be worth much more than the cost. Oh, don�t� forget liability insurance. For is anyone gets sick from your produce or hurt while buying, who they going sue? <br>

Murf, per Swisher web page they recommend max of 15 degree slope for the engine but tell you to check with the engine mfg themself.

Noticed Northern Tool sells Swisher and the specs on how large of diameter it will cut is different between Northern Tool's summer catalog and Swisher's web site. kt
