In reading your reply, I am not sure when I have had to have a link removed. On McCulluch's from a few years ago it was often. Not sure if bar, or chain caused this. Could have been the chain was almost too long to begin with as for those chains were put together at the local shop.

I don't know if you have a single stage or two stage clutch. With either you have to use the clutch just like changing grear in the tranmission as that is what you are doing.<br>

If it is a single stage clutch you will depress the clutch all the way to change the transmission gear or the pto. If a dual stage clutch you will still depress it all the way for the pto but just a little before you fully depress it you are able to shift the transmissiong keeping the pto engaged. <br>

If you will work the clutch paying carefull attention to the pedal's resistance you can find that spot. About the safest way I know to verify, it is a dual stage clutch and for you to find that spot is to put some load to pull such as a blade or plows and slowing depress the clutch until the tractor stops. <br>

The dual stage has the advantage of keeping a pto operating at same speed and load while backing up and such. The dual stage normally will allow the shifting of transmission gears without the pto having to stop. Often a single stage clutch requires the pto rotation to stop to shift gears.<br>

If by chance the pto on this tractor will push the tractor (rough cut mower will do this if anything will) meaning when you depress the clutch the speed and weight of the blade and such keep the tractor moving, be sure to install an overriding clutch to your pto. A simple option from many sources.<br>

Price, quality and durability are priorities.

First listed is price so going there:
Plywood. Cost is low enough you can afford to replace as needed.
Lexan, and if really like low cost, DOT sign.

If you don't like the diamond tread, find a shop that cuts their own metal and have one cut from what you want and place angle iron or other metal under it for support. I don't find the fiberglass as hot as the metal. But you can insulate any. I do agree with Murf on trees. Metal holds up much better there. It normally will just bend, rather than bust.
You will want it to slope towards the rear. Pouring rain onto hood is not much fun. If you have back hoe you may need to do other.

Jason,

I find using a vertical cutter I need protection on my right side. It is more often small but more of it with the flail cutter but in my opinion more dangerous with the bush hog type cutter due to larger debris. Using a finishing mower may not be as dangerous as it will not cut as large of limbs as the rough cut but ... be carefull. At least wear eye protection.

I don't see where you said you would be baling hay only moving it. If so the rear 3 pt spear should work fine unless you will need to lift the bales of hay over a fence for feeding to keep the cows off of it.

The rough cutters in the widths being talked about here use some serious hp. I think you will find a 6 to 7 foot to be about all you would want to use with that size tractor. Do you need the true rough cutter which many call bush hog? If you are only cutting hay or grass you may find a disk mower to serve your needs and their hp and weight requirement is less. Then there is also the option of a flail mower which again requires less weight and somewhat less hp than the bush hog type. If you really need a rough cut mower due to brush or trees you will be cutting be sure you have a good bumper, know the low point of your tractor (see other post on torn off filters) and buy one that extends past at least one side of your tractor a foot or so for to help protect the tractor. If there is harder work on a tractor than the rough cut mower in trees I have not found it. No sheet metal will win a battle with a 2 or 3 inch piece of solid wood (neither will other areas than sheet metal).

As to capacity of disk size and plows a lot will depend on your land. In my part of the world 50 hp will not handle a 10 foot disk.

You will find the biggest reason a person doesn't like their tractor is the hp is not enough. It cost much less to buy big enough up front that to later.

I have a good friend who is a house builder. He built a metal building and said the cost for the company was close enough he should have let them assemble it over his crew.

The screws being problem into the metal: be sure you use proper screws. My first metal roofing had wood screws and boy were they hard to start. Ended up predrilling holes. Next order came in with the proper screws, big difference. Be sure you use magnetic bit.

I drilled my shed post and ran about 5/8 rebar through the post making a cross and poured concrete. Settling has not been an issue.

100 Amp main? Depending on your machines and if by chance you were to happen to have a couple of friends over or your shop were to become a business I rather have a little larger service. In my part of the world a 200 Amp service is standard. But hey we like Air Conditioning, and total electic here.

If you are trenching from house be sure to run phone and cable for TV and extra conduit for just in case.

I have used both off road and hwy taxed diesel fuel in differenct tractors for a few years depending on where I had to buy from. The only difference I have found is the price.

Good thing the fine for using off road on hwy is not serious. Hey, what if we were to tell the FEDS, the illegals are all using off road fuel. For a $1,000 a piece fine they might be interested. Or better yet, tell congress they are sneaking in for BIG OIL. LOL

Funny how we form opinions. Surprised me on the Kubota in ND. Thought you would have been discussing Agco or Cat or such in that part of this great country.

Based upon my own experience I like my Orange pumpkins and have had right good service even with an unusual trans problem recently that cost some serious pocket money (past warranty). This experience helps me say what I have before, be sure you and the dealership are comfortable with each other. A couple of hundred dollars lower price up front may cost you a lot over the years. As a local dealer told me, he will be back, he bought a tractor!

I worked for a large company that went the way of your's. Said this is home and home is where I want to be. Bit a bullet and made career change and the Lord blessed. You may find opportunity where you are not looking or it may be Benton Harbor.

When your company was purchased they closed a plant within 60 miles of me. Know the new owners well, they have great products. Only brand in my house.

Welcome Doug,

I can address some of what you asked. There are those here you will hear from that can address it 100%.

The hydro trans probably is your best choice for front end loader.

Yes, performance is a function of weight and hp. The weight will also have influence on the stability.

You will find little support for a 3 point mounted backhoe. Using one with a subframe would present issue with the 3 pt hitch for your roto tiller.

Ebays prices, you will find many here will tell you to be very carefull on ebay. Only consider those you can examine before you bid and have GREAT confidence it is not a stolen unit.

An option you may wish to explore is to rent or lease what you think you want for a month or so. It has been my good fortune to have dealt with some very professional sales people who went to great lenghts to find out what I wanted and needed before they were willing to really talk serious about their equipment.

Being paid in cash will have no affect on insurance or the risks you are taking. If you are "contracting" regardless of how you are being paid you are taking on risk. If you are hired by the hour that sometimes keeps the risk on them as that gives the impression of employer employee relationship.

Mowers can and do damage by throwing items. The rough cut ones more so.
