My BX1500 is coming up on 200 hours so I am getting ready to buy all the necessary stuff. I don't have my operator's manual handy but if I recall correctly the oil, oil filter, transmission, trans filter, (2) fuel filters and an air filter need to be replaced.<br>

Should I also drain and replace the front axle fluid? What about the engine coolant?<br>

Of course I plan to run through all the recommended checkpoints lubrication points on both the tractor and the mower deck too. The mower deck is also ready to be winterized. It will get a set of replacement blades, new gearbox fluid, and a good cleaning.<br>
<br>
Is there any problem storing the deck vertically? I'd like to hang it on the wall to take up less space.<br>

Am I missing anything?<br>

I was under the impression that FST stood for "Fully Synchronized Transmission" (i.e. a gear-type model) and DT stood for "Dual Traction" (i.e. 4WD). On their website it looks as though Kubota designates 2WD gear-type models as "F" and 4WD gear-type models as "DT". I think most if not all HST or GST models are 4WD.

I should have mentioned this earlier... Always use your stabilizers! If you are concerned about the lawn, make up some pads out of scrap lumber to distribute the load over a larger area. Besides preventing tipover why should you always use your stabilizers? To save your rear axle. It is simply not designed to take that kind of abuse. Chances are you will bend or break something.

Call or write a letter to Curtis telling them about the problems you encountered with their installation instructions. Poor technical writing is an epedemic in engineering and design fields. Sometimes it comes from a lack of customer perspective and other times it goes all the way down to basic grammer skills. Make sure to clarify that you like their product, it's just the instructions that need improvement.

It sounds like there is a lot of confusion over the correct technical definition of breakout force. Maybe a quick email to the Kubota, Deere or New Holland hydraulics engineering department would help clear things up?

Has anyone experimented with these new, super-bright LEDs? If they make flashlights, automotive stop turn & tail lights, and police car light bars out of them they should work great for auxillary lighting. They are VERY bright and draw low amps.

I put a big dent in mine while rolling the mower deck (somewhat carelessly) underneath the tractor. The mounting tab for the lift arms is tall enough to hit the filter if you shove the deck in without watching closely.

If the filter isn't leaking, you should be fine.

My dealer warned me about this when I took delivery. He said that he's had more than one BX owner engage the mid PTO without the shaft being fully locked. He mirrored Art's comment that if you are REALLY lucky, it might only take out the filter. More likely, you're looking at a whole new front end to the tranny case. Big $$$ repair.

I'd have your dealer check it for hidden damage before you do anything else with it.

Get the 54" deck. It sticks out further which makes it easier to edge, not to mention adding another 1/2ft to your swath. If I recall correctly it also has better anti-scalp rollers and a better deflector than the 48".

As long as you don't use 4WD when you don't need it, the BX bar tires will not hurt your lawn. Trust me, I have experience with both! This is NOT true for a tractor with larger tires. The BX bar tires DO provide extra grip in mud and rough terrain. IMO, the best feature of the R1's is the self-cleaning ability. Turfs are horrible about packing full of mud, gravel and other debris (like grass clippings).

There is a differential in both the front and rear axle. Only the REAR axle has a diff lock. When the diff lock pedal is pressed, the two rear wheels will lock and turn at the same speed no matter what. When it is released the rear wheels will turn at different speeds in a turn or in low traction conditions. The front axle is unaffected by the rear diff lock, whether in 2WD or 4WD. It only reacts to traction conditions under each tire.

There is NO differential BETWEEN the front and rear axles (i.e. in the transmission). That is why your grass gets torn up in 4WD even when you are not using the diff lock. Not only do the inside and outside wheels want to spin at different speeds while in a turn, but so do the front and rear axles. Basically, all four wheels move in different arcs during a turning manuver. In 4WD with no 'center' diff, the front and rear axles are driven at the same speed by the transmission (or transfer case in a road vehicle). Since the the axles (think drive shafts) want to turn at different speeds just as the inside and outside wheels do, but are being forced to turn at the same speed, something has to give. The result is the wheel with the least traction spins faster than its own ground speed.

BTW, that is the main difference between part-time and full-time four wheel drive on most road vehicles. Part-time 4WD vehicles do not have a center diff in the transfer case, full-time 4WD vehicles do. Part-time 4WD with diff locks in both axles is the only way to get true 4WD.

Why not just order it from the store and have them ship it to you? The shipping charges would probably be less than the cost in gas to drive there and back, not to mention the value of your time.

I'll echo the others. The best place for a ball hitch is the factory drawbar. I mounted a 2" ball on my drawbar to do exactly the same thing you are. It works great. Since my factory drawbar is not removable, I still use a 2-point drawbar for lightweight towing of implements with a clevis-type hitch. The 2-point drawbar can also be used as an aid to help couple the ball hitch if your trailer is too heavy to lift. Run a chain over the drawbar, lift the tongue with the 3PH, and slowly lower it onto the ball. Voila!

If you only need to grade your driveway a couple times a year, you could always rent the box blade as needed and own the angle blade since you will be clearing snow constantly during the winter. A word of warning: clearing snow on a gravel driveway (with any implement) can be tricky business. I've found that operating an angle blade with the convex surface facing into the snow works the best. If you're buying implements for a BX, get one specifically designed for a sub-CUT or you'll be dissappointed.

That could also be a bargaining point on the asking price of a used unit. Incentives on new units attract buyers that would otherwise be interested in a used machine, reducing demand in the used market and concequently lowering sale prices.

Being a TLB (Tractor/Loader/Backhoe), can you even get it without a backhoe? I'd think most dealers would be very hesitant to split a package like that, especially off the lot. It might be possible to special order one though. I think the canopy is integrated into the four post ROPS. It might be removable but the ROPS or course isn't.

All of the tasks you described can be done with an L-series machine. However, if you want a rotary cutter over 7' wide, I'd go straight to the M-series. The larger L's such as the L4630 or L5030 have enough PTO HP to get the job done, but you might like the extra size and mass of an M4900 or an M5700. If you need extra manuverability or just like the smaller chassis, go with a large L. If you're more comfortable with a bigger heavier tractor go with a small M. If you like the M-series but want to limit cost go with the MX5000. It's a budget model comparable in size to the L5030. As far as color goes I'm partial to Orange, but most people here will tell you to shop for the best dealer as much as the right machine.

You can cheat a few extra inches of lift out of your limited cat. 1 by replacing the fixed length lifting rod with a second adjustable rod (see my pics). You could also park the rear tires on "ramp" built with wood planks or similar. However, I would highly recommend that you look at a digger built specifically for a sub-CUT, even if the only difference is a shorter auger bit. Good luck with the hunt and be sure to let us fellow sub-CUT owners know how it works out!
