Peters I think I'd like your wood. When I was growing up the kitchen stove wood was split with an axe in the shed on a HUGE block. Most of the furnace wood was split up by the buzz saw (an old antique device now the big saws are much faster) with what we called a Go-Devil (like a sled hammer only one side sharpened for splitting). We had some wood blocks (old elm and if I recall down south is a tree called gumball) you could not split in 2 days of trying with a maul you had to use wedges.

The big 20+" maple and beech blocks here can be usually be split with my mosnter maul but usually less energy is used (by me) on the hyd splitter.

I usually try to have 20 face cords put up and hope to only use 15.

Ken You have a double sided sword with top soil. Virgin top soil scraped down 0-6/8 inches is gonna be expensive and it will contain all of the weeds and grass seeds of where it came from. Fill dirt that has been screened will not have all the seeds but will take fertilizer and probably lime (depending on the PH) to prep it for seed.

Where we are mining gravel we have what is called overburden (the dirt and soils covering the gravel. All of that is stripped off and stock piled for screening as needed to replentish topsoil pile.

The subsoils that are screened do a great job of growing grass.

The other MAJOR problem with topsoil is if it gets wet before you use it. It will clump and pack thighter than a frozen snowball.

Make sure it is loose and workable with very few or no clumps.

I like to mix sand 50/50 with what I bring home to help keep it loose and no so packy. (I have a 30 ton load stached its been there for 6-8 years now I've only taken a small amount out for little projects). We have a flower specilist, with small green houses) that has run a loader here for years and that is his recomendation.

JD has a Tech CD out for about $60.00 us. I get more info from JD parts. If you register with your dealer me thinks you can log onto JD parts and view all of your parts.

I have bought the manuals but I have found the online parts much more accurate and the substitues are there.

If you need more help on how to register yell back and I'll relook the process and let you know.

Paul put something heavy on the 3ph and lift it a couple of 6 or more times and look for your leak. I would focus on fittings or connections.

Peters BOY did that tug back a memory! I did my last tour in Korea, 1990. They use those! The Koreas can build some purty neat stuff from salvage. This one seems a little more refined than the ones I saw. 13 years does wonders.

One of the koolest things was a little 4wd tractor hooked to a cart with a pto drive thru a transmission to the differential making a 6x6. Wallered right thru the paddies.

Chief If I remember correctly your tractor gets parked in a cushie spot. Cool in summer and warm in winter?

Mine hauls the fire wood in and sits near the wood furnace all winter over the floor drain.

When I have completed the work requiring all of my lighting I shut down the biggest lights before I head for garage. I keep tractor at a fast idle while I clean the bulk of snow off whatever I am using. Idle down and move it back inside.

I have never had a wattage concern or a problem starting. But then again battery only 3 years old now.

Craig Yesterday afternoon I was over at Boys (oldest son)house digging out a couple of trees over an embankment. Lower out rigger streched out all the way, top just barely out. Anyways real steep side slope and had to dig in several different positions. Backing in I had to keep the hoe turned up the slope and dipper streched out low as a counter weight.

My Hoe did not move on the mounts at all. I was watching because of your post. (The value of this site again).

Does yours still move? If so you ought to take a real hard look at it or go and beat the snot out of your service guys to make sure the mounting is right and is solid.

Mighty moe I've read your post a couple of times. I believe Your main concern is: does it have enough HP to run the hyd's? You have more than enough hp for your hyd especially if you are running an aux pto pump.

I don't think you have tractor enough to handle the weight and stress a larger hoe will put on the tractor.

I am one to save a buck if I can and I have used a Arps model 28 8' 3ph back hoe on my 35hp 4400 JD. I was not pleased at all with the stress on the tractor hitch points. I have since bought the JD 48 which fits SOLID. I use it in the most difficult positions, sideslopes, back into ditches have to use hoe to push tractor back out...

There are several threads about 3ph hoes and damage to tractor 3ph systems.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is: Buy the manfactures hoe that will fit your current tractor and when you are ready to trade beat the sales guy hard for all of your money spent on hoe towards new hoe for new tractor.

Thanks jerry. I spoke to our "Stone" guys and 1 had heard about it and looks like we're gonna give it a go. It will be early next spring before we try it.

Right now it's just trying to keep things running, till the end. Only about 7 weeks till "mother Nature" starts shutting us down. It's been 1 LOOOONNNNGGGGG summer.

Use your PU in reverse to drag the snow out. That way the cutter does not dig into the gravel. You can use your loader bucket the same way.

A thin cover of stone over fabric is always gonna be a problem for you. Stone looks nice but is a PITA when plowing snow.

Another alternative is: Scrape it up and store it in the fall and lay it back down in the spring.

Any weapon you use you will have to hold it up and away from the stone. This includes your trusty old shovels.

Chief in the area you were mowing on a down slope more weight may help you get some more bite or it may just add to your momentum at the bottom.

I have weights on mine and I slide down more than I care to admit to.

Usually I am in 4wd on the one slope I have. But I forget because it it a very short slide and when the slide starts I'll start picking the 3ph attachment up. It adds weight to rears but it usually does not stop the slide, because of momentum, until things level some.

Even in 4wd it does not hurt to have a little up pressure on attachment.

I do a 1/4 mile of drive plus the parking areas, some is gravel and some is blacktop. I like my back blade to move snow b4 freeze up. I turn it around backwards so the cutting edge does not bite in and I scuff the snow off at an angle. You can pull alot of snow away from things then blow it.

I have turfs and last year was the first time in 3 years I needed to put chains on. We had a lot of snow!

I now am back to doing a quick clean outs in the am with back blade then when enough is windrowed I blow it.

Hopefully we get lots this year and my first weapon of choice will be the blower. I'm looking forward to a long hard winter...
