I have also used the screw splitters. They were quite the idea 50 years ago. They did do the job easier (but not safer) compaired to splitting wedges and mauls. They do work well on a straight grained piece of wood.

BUT I'VE never seen any old timers that had used them using them now. I'll never use one again. Hydraulics is the only way to spilt wood if you are going to do it yourself.

If you put a solid block of wood on it with some knots in it it will hopefully only stall your tractor. Be prepared for some real grunt work unscrewing the point.

As I recall generally on all the counters the arm/lever was connected by a spring to a lever on the the knotter. When the knotter was activated it pulled the spring.

Lots of times counters were coggered up so not sure how to tell you how to proceed.

You should be able to attach the spring to any part of the knotter that does not rotate. Just remember the lever to pull the spring is triggered by someting that rotates.

I tried a 3ph backhoe B4 buying the one that fits my tractor from the factory.

There is no comparison! The 3ph will get the job done but at great risk to your tractor mounting system unless you are extreamly careful. When you get to ruttin on a stump forget careful it is brute force and lots of ripping.

Breaking a lift arm or top link at the transmission mount did not look to be a cheap or easy fix just to save some money or time upfront.

Hoes need to be on the tractor solid. No short cuts!

Yes you are correct taking off the lift arms is a PIA it takes at least 6 whole minutes. Putting back on takes me at least 12 minutes because I take time to inspect the tractor and lube all the connections.

That is a little high. However it might be almost new. I can't believe it's a 2002 located near you and not have been well used.

There are alot of very good quality blowers out there for less.

Look to your west and north for some better pricing on quality blowers it would be worth a 2 hour drive to save 500 or get a brand new one for the same money.

The main problem is the rivited pulley welded onto a hub that is pushed onto the spindle. It is really too light duty to put much pressure on it w/o bending.

It is apart now. Need a new pully in addition to the original problem spindle. Will return the complete assembly since I'll have to wait for the pully anyway.

The bottom threads are RH. It took 2 3' pipe wrenches to break that loose. I had a lot of pressure on the pully since I'd already bent it and hit it with some heat and it popped loose.

The lawn will survive another week with out mowing. Besides I'd rather cut wood now.

He proabably loves the profit margin also. The one you describe is not even in the same class as the 47 or 48.

I have seen no stresses in any wheels or any place else on my hoe or tractor. I have over 1000 hrs on 4400 and 150+ on 48 hoe. Common sense and a good maintenance program go a long way toward reducing problems.

I've seen lots of 48 hoes around here and only a couple of 47's. I have not heard of any issues locally. But have heard a couple on here. I also drive by the local JD dealer 3-4 times a day and hardly ever see any little tractors in there being worked on.

I have not looked at ramps lately. But I think wheel chair ramps are 1 / 12 and they are ok.

Your 9 / 80 (1 / 9) sounds very doable. Which side of the house will it be on? North sides like to grow algie and that can get slippery when moist or wet.

What's their bottom line on the MX6, with the trade? They have quite a bit of wiggle room on MX6. If not look at another color.

When greasing sometimes you may have to use a jack to remove pressure from the area. Lift the part that holds the component to releive the pressures.

My same thought use the hyds and trans for an extended period to really warm up the system. Make sure the vent cap is off to vent the moisture.

Or you could try draining into a steel bucket and heat up OUTSIDE on a outdoor stove and cook out the water. poor back in hot and run and do it again.

A concern about venting a shop vac outside is the tightness of the house.

Intake air might have to come in from a chimney or other waste vent stack.

OUCH THAT DART IN THE FOREHEAD HURTS!

I manage a sand and gravel facility, 2 asphalt facilities and deliver a broad variety of materials.

All of our loads are scaled. If the scale is down in Homer the yardage method is used and our loader guys are good, those loads are always in the customers favor and spot checked once or twice a day at one of our other 6 scale locations. I have 3 65+' scales at the Polkville location and 1 in the Homer location. The main office and terminal also have one each.

Customers are always calling in asking us to compute their needs and when it comes out short they expect us to truck the rest for free. I always make some assumptions that their grade or finished grade might be off. I will not give a calculation I will give an estimate using 2" + or- on the grade. I've been out to lots of jobs and grades are not even close.

Why is it if you have a truck that carries 22 ton customers are unwilling to buy the 2 extra ton and have some extra. 2 ton of any type of material is lost in the size of the area that will take 20 tons. Many contractors are cheap trying to cut corners and blame someone else when it's short.

That said: we mostly deal with larger contractors that quote very close and figure in the overages on dirt work and when you deliver the 2360 tons of item 4 they know exactly where it will be used. They also have no problem ordering a extra 30 ton load even if they think they only need 20-23 tons.

My dumps weigh over 70,000+ carring 21-23 tons loaded our trailers are 107,000 carring 31-34 tons homeowners and many contractors have NO IDEA how much weight that is. Most people have no clue that a contractor with good help can move a ton of material in 8 wheelbarrows, some less. As far as heaping up over the sides that is a invation for the DOT boys to stop you. Most trucks are designed to maximize the load below the sides. Our gravel weights just over 1.68 tons per yard lime stone suppliers are a little less. Do the math. 17'L X 52"H X 76"W Thats our smallest dump.

Trucks are expensive, good drivers to drive them are expensive. When a driver tells you the ground looks soft it probably is, they are not backing in. When they ask 6 times about leach fields and old tanks to include old fuel tanks they are serious. When you try to put a tractor trailer in a drive way designed for cars and not tear up the road out front or crush a culvert it probably won't work. The worst case is the homeowner who has no idea of what is buried in the yard. Once I have seen a concrete truck sitting in a old septic tank almost on its side. Homeowners falt? Or stupid truckdriver? Homeowner or contractor is going to pay for towing and damage to truck.

But contractors and homeowners find it easiest to blame it on the supplier and trucking rather than their lack of knowledge.

I've had a homeowner accuse a driver of delivering part of the load to someone else in route to the job, because the pile looked small.

Concrete and asphalt are batched in state certified facilities. Our asphalt plants are rechecked every 90 days. There is no short loading or the computer driven delivery ticket would reflect it. It is usually a bad quote based on a bad grade or the inability of a homeowner or contractor to hold a fine finish grade on the project.

Bottom line I can not believe someone would continue to do business with a poor supplier that keeps poor help unless he is just out to do a job as cheap as possible to increase his profit.

BTW for your yard I would never recommend 6" of screened topsoil unless it was screened with lots of small stone and sand.

Moisture in the soil has to do with light and fluffly or heavy and clumpy it all depends on the season and moisture also raw material.

Always remember a ton of dirt and a ton of chicken feathers weighs the same.

PLEASE make sure you have ALL hydraulic cylinder components blocked tied or chained B4 U start any work on the valve block or bodies.

I am always amazed at how many times our professional mechanics forget this, or just think I'm not working on that circuit... and down comes the boom or blade. So far we have had no injuries other than a good soaking of hyd oil.
