badgerfish; I don't personally know of a company who specializes, but I'll about guarntee someone on the board has, so I'm sure others will speak up. I've saw tractors, combines, cars, and pickups that have been adapted to a handicaped persons needs. I'm sure the auto and truck changes were made by a firm who specializes in that sort of thing, but the tractor and combine modifications I've seem were done by the dealer, owner of the machine, or a weld shop of the owners choice. I've saw a combine with a custom built elevator to lift a wheelchair bound person up to the cab door, also tractor cab elevators, and all sorts of custom fashoned levers to make operating the controls easier. So like Art said work with your dealer who can either do these things or recommend a welder with the skills to do the job for you. Far as one brand tractor being easier to modify than another, I would'nt even want to guess on that part but I'm sure there will be diferences between brands that could make adaptations easier. My Uncle bought a new 706 back about that time (65), it was quite a tractor but my how it loved it's gasoline. When you say "Wore out", do you mean whole tractor, loader and all or just the engine? The weakest point of the tractor was the Torque Amplifier, if it's shot there is a TA eliminator package made by somebody that cost's less than replacing the torque and you still have eight forward and at least two reverse gears left. IH made thousands of that style engine, so if salvage parts are needed they should be easily obtainable. I guess my point of this is whether you would put enough hours on the tractor to justify trading just because of a diesel engine. I still use a Farmall 656 also a 65 model that I've overhauled the engine twice in since buying it new, there can be lots of good hours left in some of those old tractors plus they were real simple to overhaul compared to some of todays hi tech computer controled nightmares. My thoughts and prayers are with you folks over there on a daily basis, so please be carefull and come home safe, we do truly apreciate what you're doing over there. Frank.

I just could'nt stand it any longer, so I had to speak my piece again on the Deere 4310/4410 tractors. I got one of each, both with 12/12 E/power reversers. I guess it's to each his own, but I've had years of experience with hydro drive tractors, combines, etc. For 99% of all jobs especially shuttle work you could'nt give me a hydro over the 12/12 reverser on a compact. They've both been great little tractors, I had a 4300 Deere prior to these two and it also was a 12/12 shuttle, I just got so used to it that I don't want anything else. I do have problems with my left knee, but with the 12/12 there's no need to ever touch the clutch pedal on a ten series. Well that's enough from me on that, I'll keep quite from now on about the hydro/gear thing, everybody's heard it by now. Frank.

I don't know about other states, but in Iowa auto dealers cannot be open on Sunday, so that's when a lot of folks go car shopping, including me. Usually the lots are open so you can wander around, take your time and be left alone. I've actually had salesmen run along side of the car shouting into the window for me to stop and talk to him on a week day, so I just don't stop by a dealership unless I'm there to buy something. Those folks have to make a living too, but I can't imagine a more high pressure job that some of the big time dealers must put on their sales people. Anymore if I don't know the owner of the dealership on a first name basis I just don't stop. Frank.

Call the dealer back and tell him/ or her, you'd like to buy a quick coupler for your new tractor. They're a couple hundred bucks, they'll know what you want and your back and your nerves will heal quickly. I'm somewhat physically challenged, so I really can't muscle three pt. impliments around much any more, so I really enjoy having the ability to back up lift the three pt. and the impliment is mounted. it'll be the best money you've spent in a while. The tire tread thing has been hashed and hashed with everyone having their reasons for a different tread design. Chains are by far the best traction aid yet invented, but they ride rough, can tear up fenders, scratch up blacktop drives, etc.,so plenty of pluses and plenty of negatives for chains. If winter traction were your only concern without chains then probably R-1 tires with plenty of wheel weights would provide the greatest pressure per sq. in. on the surface of the tread bar theoreticly giving you the best traction on ice, packed snow, etc.. but then there is the issue of R-1's tearing up turf in the summer, so I guess I don't have a solid answer for you, I've just raised more issues. Personally I don't push much snow with a compact so I still like my R-4"s for 99% of all other work. Now I've probably really stirred up an issue. Frank.

Kyvette; I lerned a lot from an electical contractor friend this summer when we trenched in a 3 phase line to the new shop We buried a 2 in. conduit 36 in. deep with a warning tape about 12 in. below the surface. We tried to push the wires thru the conduit, did'nt work. Contractor friend said get your sewer tape, push it thru then hook the wires to the end of the tape and pull them thru. Worked like a top. Never too old to learn I guess. Frank.

Art; We've got Michilen "Agri-Rib" on a couple farm tractors, I'll have to check on the sidewall, but they must be what you call rhe R1-W. They have at least a one inch taller tread bar than the Firestone R-1's, but they're not a cane and rice tire. We used to have a set of cane and rice for the combine that we used in real wet falls, and about all they did was get you farther into the mud before you got stuck. We used to be exclusively Fireston till they got kinda picky on warranty. I haven't had a problem with a Michelen so far as warranty, but I know other farmers who say they are tops about taking care of thir customer. Frank.

Welcome to the world of compacts, for their size they are truly a prety tough little cookie. Looks like you followed my old song and dance of "You gotta like the dealer before you can like the tractor". Peetersef; I had a set of home made ones for the bucket, but they had all the negatives the other guys mentioned. I got the regular Deere fork attachment for the 430 loader and it is a lot better deal. I use them in tight places where my regular forklift is to tall or too clumbsy to get into. Best of luck. Tom is right on the money, you want a box bladt that is at least as wide as your tractors total width, it just works a lot better than one that's too narrow. Just take light cuts to your tractors traction limits and you'll do fine. Enjoy the new rig. Frank.

1stjds; Thanks for the compliment on all my toys, but in the real world they for the most part are part of the equipment for farm and field maintinence. the 48 hoe never comes off the 4310, it just seems like we use it almost daily for some small thing that if it weren't allready on a tractor you would'nt take time to mount it. We never seem to run out of field stones to dig out that we hit during spring and fall tillage, the 48 has dug out hundreds of them. Probably the most handy machine you have saw in my pictures is that old Clark forklift. I bought it quite a few years ago in an "As Is" condition, pump was shot, the ram leaked bad, etc. I'd be totaly lost without it now, for example we had a tire go flat on the rear axle of our 9610 Deere combine yesterday morning in the field. That old green hunk of cast iron lifted the rear of the combine, we blocked it up for safety and changed the tire right in the field. Back to the 48, stumps are a far greater challenge than rocks, rocks come out once they move, but stumps can have lots of roots going all over the place that can give you fits at times. At 3/4 throttle the pump is spining fast enough to be fine. If you were just above low idle I'd worry more about stress on the engine than the pump, at real low rpm the engine doesn't produce enough torque to hurt the hydro. Frank.

Dean, your absolutely right, as our three boys were growing up drilled into them to learn a trade, do it right and don't rob the public and you'll never go looking for work. The son who took over the furniture plant is allways 6 mo. to a year behind. I allways as he was learning the trade stressed to him to never let a bad piece out of the door, that will say more about you than twenty good ones. We don't even have a phone at the shop, but orders keep coming from new customers as well as folks I worked for 35 years ago. The other two have found other skills that are making them a good living too, so the desire to learn a trade and do it right is still a good way to live your life and be a part of your community. Captian B, We've used electric radiant "Cove Heaters" in the assembly rooms at the furniture plant for probably 15 yrs. now and could'nt like them any better. The assembly rooms are independent pods inside a metal pole building, so they have no wind factor to deal with. No open flame, up out of the way, and just not too bad on the light bill. The rooms are insulated floors to celing with 6 in. roll between the studs, floor joists and ceiling joists. We also use a home made ground heat recovery system to supplement the electric. Light bill doesn't change much summer to winter, the REC put us on a time of day rate plan where the juice is about half price between 7 AM and 4 PM, then regular rate all other hours. Seems the chances of both the injectors and the glow plugs all being bad is rather slim. Without telling us more it's pretty hard to say that something else more simple and lots less expensive might not be your culprit. Glow plugs or injectors never seem to all go bad at the same time. With proper fuel storage and filter maintenence injectors hardly ever are a problem anymore. I've had farm tractor engines with 6-8000 hours that I've traded in and never replaced an injector. The glow plugs from the "First Crop", 1960's era were a pain, but the "New Crop" glow plugs of today seldom cause problems. Your problem could be as simple as corroded battery trminals or a cloged fuel filter, check those and other less expensive cures first. Best of luck. Frank. P. S. Beagle; That would be a lot of gate openings a bucket at a time, so now I better understand your need for a trailer. I don't know how popular flare box wagons were for farm use back quite a few years ago in your aeria, but around here they're just not used anymore so you usually can find them on an estate farm auction that will bring 50 to 100 dollars for a decent wagon, hoist, box and all. I've bought several then thrown the box away and use them for lumber storage I've got three or four of them around with good hydraulic hoists on them. Just cut the box down to where you can reach over the side easily with the loader and you still probably could haul a yard and a half or so. Just another thought. Frank.

KTMRider: Welcome to the world of CUT's. Puting a rear mount blower on the front is complicated because of drive problems. A rear mount blower is designed to run off the rear 540 RPM PTO and a front mount blower is designed to run off the mid PTO that is a smaller diamater and usually runs much faster, so quite complicated drive systems are required to convert a rear mount to front use. You would need to use either the mid PTO or a hydraulic drive system. both can get real pricey. I've never had a rear blower on a compact, but I've had an 8 ft. two stage blower on the rear of a 100 hp. farm tractor with a FEL on the tractor for years so you have the option of using either. Three miles is a long way to go in reverse, so I can understand your desire for a front mount. Best of luck. Frank.
