Murf; Now you're making my life too complicated. I never knew there was a steam bell also. It's the sound of the old shrill whisle I'm after. As a kid the train went thru the farm we lived on, on a cold still winter morning you could hear that old whisle for miles before it got to us. This summer we attended a county fair where a fellow had about five or six whisles on a pole with an induatrial compressor beside it. He could sorta play a tune with them and allways attracted a crowd of every age from little kids to old goofers like me. I'm sure one could be bought on e-bay or somewhere, but I just want the challenge of trying to make one. If you know of a website or perhaps a book I could buy, that would be neat. The Mrs. says I'll get arrested for being a public nuscance, and "She aint a gonna bail me out." So before giving me any direction on the design maybe you ought to see if enough Tractor point members would pass the hat to get me out of the stony lonesome. Frank.

Dean, Are you going to have this complete by the second weekend in March or is a paintbrush going to be needed to attend the picnic? Nice job!! My new weld shop being made out of an old building is coming along slow but steady, so when some of the real ugly gets covered with new tin I'll post a picture or two. I had to move out of the building I was in to keep insurance folks happy. They were right, the one I was using had too much potential for fire, I'm moving into a striped to the bone remodeled building about 100 ft. from the prior one with a steel clad interior. keep on pounding. lbrown59; I assume your refering to a 3pt. hitch rear blade. If so I really never saw one with that feature other than changing the length of the top link of the 3pt. on the tractor will give you that effect. Hope this helps. Frank.

Those steep of slopes are pretty scary, I would'nt recommend any type of conventional wheeled tractor for such dutys. As mentioned above there may be specialty equipment meant for that type of work that I'm not aware of. Perhaps a bit of fencing and some sheep or goats may be your lowest cost and safest solution. There ain't no free lunch, it's either stolen or more likely there is no tractor. It's really sad that technology has given us all these great new tools to make our lives better, then someone too lazy to make their own way in life uses it to gyp honest folks out of their money or property. But I guess if everyone were honest we'd have a lot of policemen out of work. Were taking the holiday off, but the people in the path of Frances aren't going to have much of a holiday, two in a row, that's a bit much. Frank.

Angry, (I hope not), welcome to the world of compacts. I'm not totaly familliar with the Cub Cadets of today, but in the past they have been one of the leaders from back in the 60's and 70's I guess I need a little refreshment on history. Did the Cub Cadets from the International Harvester days follow the IH farm equipment into the Case-IH organization or was the trademark name sold to someone else who now builds the Cadets? Hope you enjoy your tractor as much as the rest of us here do. WARNING!!, they get habit forming, soon other attachments will follow your Cadet home like a lost puppy. Frank.

Greetings from the USA. Acording to the JD literature they offer five 8000 twenty series track tractors form 170 to 255 hp. They also offer four models in the 9000 twenty series from 280 hp to 500 hp. I've test driven both series, they are awsome machines. One of the tractors I drove had the Auto steer GPS guidance system in it. At the end of the round you take the wheel and manually take it past 90 degrees of a 180 degree turn around then simply let go of the wheel and it seeks its own path width and steers you to the other end of the field. I live in the heart of the corn belt where 95 % of all crops are row crop so the tracks are a bigger seller to road construction crews for ease of transport on paved roads, (no lo boy trailer needed), rather than farmers. I think in the great plains to the west of here where small grains prevail thay are more popular than here. My personal opinion is that they are rougher riding than a conventional wneeled tractor, and a bit too clumbsy for grain cart and lighter work dutys. I really don't know much about the Challengers, but they've been around for quite a while, and I've really never heard anything bad about them. I probably see about as many Cat's as I do Deeres on tracks around our aeria. What part of Europe are you from? Are tracks popular there? I'm fortunate to live within about an hour from the Deere Waterloo assembly plant and have been there quite a few times to watch some tractors that I own go thru the assembly line and be the first person to start it and drive it off the end of the assembly line. Keep in touch, I'd love to hear things about your tractors and farming techniques in your country. Frank.

bnrhuffman; I just read your last post on the lawn reseeding issue. You stated that your new lawn had a few weeds but nothing roundup could'nt take care of. I'm sure you allready know this, but just to refresh everyone's mind Roundup is a "Non selective" herbicide meaning it will kill any vegetation it is applied to except "Roundup Ready" plants. Roundup ready plants like RR soybeans, cotton, etc., have the RR ready gene added to their genetic base to make them roundup resistant, plants without that gene die when roundup is applied. FYI. BARNEE; Your 50 hr. fluid and filter change is probably the most important service to prolong the life of your tractor that will ever occur while you own it. Fluid and filters are free compared to parts and service down the road. Any machining chips left floating around in a transmission and hydraulic system are simply begging for future troubles. You'll be well repaid for the 50 hr. service. Frank.

"Good Greif", I thought the gear vs. hydro issue was dead and buryed, but I guess not. I'll just repeat my thing from before. Thank goodness we live in a country where we're free to make our own decisions, If you like gears, get a gear, if you like hydros, get a hydro. I'm a gearhead to the hilt, if Deere stops offering the 12/12 reverser I might do something so drastic as buying an orange or blue tractor that still offers a gear drive. Every time I trade pickups the dealer gives me that same old sob story about manual trannys being impossible to resell when I trade it in and he has a doozy on the lot with a marshmallow box that would be great for me. So I simply ask if he wants to order me a standard cab pickup with a manual tranny or if need to visit the Ford dealer next door. Funny how quickly he gets down to business and also kind of strange that my trade ins are usually sold before the dealer gets my new one in. Don't let dealers sell you something you don't want, they're not making the payments, you are. Nuff said, Frank.

I really think you're a long way from a bargan with the Yanmar on E-Bay. A compact tractor without 4 wheel drive is almost an orphan, they have a very limited resale market. If you're going to be handling big rounds with any kind of safety you really need a full size 50 to 60 Hp farm tractor. First find a dealer that has been in business in your local aeria for a long time, tell him or her your needs and I'm sure they can set you up with a decant used tractor with a loader and 3pt. for very little more if not a bit less than the Yanmar on E-Bay. Especially when buying used tractore allways try to buy locally form a dealer with a good reputation, they need your business, you will need service at some point down the road, it just works out lots better for you and the dealer both. I really enjoy my compacts, but they just aren't adequate for big ropunds, best of luck. Frank.

milllers1, I'm as green as green gets, but Deere's imatch system is as obsolete as an Edsel. To this date I'm not sure if all the manufacturing companys who produce category one three point equipment agree on where the top pin should be positioned as far as height above the axis of the lower pins. Till that happens I can't see any point in buying a Deere imatch quick coupler with a fixed position top hook when for the same or less money you can have a Land Pride quick coupler with an adjustable top hook. I think there around 250.00. Frank.

Andy, Art is right, you can adjust the lead percentage by using tire pressures. I'm not saying that your tractor might not have a defect causing excessive noise. I don't know what the lead ratio percentage is on JD compacts, but I think it's arouind 2 - 4% on front wheel assist axles of most farm tractors. This is a necessary feature otherwise you'd have a hard time driving your tractor in a straight line while in 4 wh. dr.. Remember your pickup has the cab quite well isolated from the chassis to keep it quiet inside. Frank.

Thanks everyone for the response to my Hybrid Car question. Now you're getting me interested, I'm going to check out those listed by car and driver. I most likely won't buy anything right now, but as in all products where competition is high the products will get better. Not "if" but likely "when" a new discovery in the technology of the hybrids is found and perfected to make them less expensive, such as cheaper, lighter, more efficent batteries, etc.. Just imagine the oil savings possible if even a third of the cars on the road today could have their mileage improved by ten mpg. Someone brought up the subject of using idle farmland to produce soy diesel. Not a lot of those acres are really capable of growing soybeans without tremendous soil losses due to erosion, etc.. Most of that land is best suited to being in grass, which may hold promise as a bio mass energy producer to perhaps replace natural gas in powerplants, who knows? We do need to get real serious about our future energy needs. I do remember my early years without electricity or a telephone, we got along just fine, but I really don't want to go back to the "Good Ole Days" as folks call them, the "Good New Days" are now, lets try to keep them. Beagle, You've got a bunch of work ahead of you. The least expensive method would be two or three overweight brother in laws with spades and shovels while you run the tractor, the snacks and refreshments might get a bit out of hand tho so maybe that's not a good idea. In the real world why not rent a backhoe for a day and do it safely. Seems like every summer I hear of someone being badly hurt or killed trying to pull a stump, fence post, push a tree over, etc.. Early this spring we lost a good young man in our neighborhood. He cut a tree and it would'nt tip over so took his "H" Farmall with the loader to push it over, you know the rest, it was a shocking loss for our community. So how ever you get it done do it with safety in mind, we're kind of a little community here on Tractor Point and we don't want to lose one of our best. Frank.

Brian' First read you owners manual cover to cover and DO follow the safety guides in the book. Please fasten your seatbelt if your tractor has a ROPS bar. In the real world experience is by far your best teacher, go at it slow and be patient you'll catch on quicker than you think. Best of luck. Frank

Brokenarrow; May my wife and I add our sympathys. TomG summed it up as well as anyone could have done. My wife and I have sang at funerals with a local group for 30+ years, we have one this morning. Sometimes I have to step back and choke some tears down when a young person with their whole life ahead of them is lost in an accident. When someone has had a good full life we must mourn their loss, but also celebrate their entry into a better world than we have here. We never really apreciate them till they are gone, that's just human nature. As we speak my Father is in a nursing home, 95 yrs. old, without a mind. As hard as it is to see him living like that, I'll still cry when he goes, none of us are really ready. Frank and Lucile.
