Deere and Kubota both build top notch equipment, so I'll just jump back on my old soap box and preach the good dealer sermon again. Your most importand decision is the dealership you are working with. How long have they been in busines, their reputation in the community, etc? With proper maintenence either tractor will last you a long time. Just curious, when you said get another Woman, do you mean you'd have two Women? On second thought that might work out cause then you could get both a Deere and a kubota, one for each Woman. Have a great day. Frank.

ERielley, I don't know much about AC tractors, but if it is an ordinary dry plate clutch your statment that the clutch pedal pushes easily and doesn't seem to cantact anything sounds like a throwout bearing that's out to the point that the balls have fallen out and let the contact race fall back so that the contact race cannot or barely reaches the clutch release fingers. I've in the past had the woodruff key that is on the shaft that the throwout bearing yolk is mounted on fall out so that the shaft rotates in the yolk and doesn't push the fingers when you push the pedal, so that is something else to check. Replacing a throwout bearing on a simple dry clutch is pretty straight forward and not real expensive other than labor. Again guessing because I'm not that familliar with AC, the tractor will have to be split at the flywheel housing for access. There can be lots of reasons for a stuck clutch from worn transmission shaft splines to a frozen pilot bearing, but yours doesn't sound like that. Hope this helps. Frank.

JParker; Seems like there's nothing like a good excuse to run to TSC or Fleet Farm. Somehow the Mrs. never seems to understand my cravings, but then again I'd rather take five minutes in the ring with the former Minnesota Governor than go to a mall. 5picker; Thanks, I think you solved a mystery for me. This spring when I first used the MX5 cutter it had a shake to it. I shut it down to find the problem, but could'nt find anything wrong, I started it back up and no shake. After thinking about your remark about the blade pivots galding up I'm sure that was the problem. It's worked fine since, perhaps a squirt of oil this fall would be in order. Thanks, Frank.

I've hit lots of things that just simply stop the tractor without any damage to the box blade. Possibly I don't understand a special circumstance you have, but I think adding two sheets of half inch plate would be overkill and just lots of extra weight to lug around. Best of luck. Frank.

James; You aren't the first or the last to do such a thing, I pulled some real boners too. I'm really not familiar with an Ingersol brand tractor. I'd almost guarantee if you put the gas in the hydro resovoir that it circulated thru the system. Long as it was still working properly when you shut down for the fluid change you've allready done about all that can be done. Yes all the pumps are metal. Did the fluid/gas mix you draind appear to have any metal flakes or chips in it? Gasoline is'nt much of a lubricant, so it's posssible that a pump could have scored. About all you can do is just keep running it checking to se if the system overheats or becomes erratic, long as it keeps working properly you got lucky. Hope this helps. Frank.

Murf; Yes you're right, there has to be a clutch somewhere for the PTO. The hydro unit powers only the transmission. I don't know enough about an NH to say whether the PTO clutch is dry or wet, but thre has to be one. In my prior post I was thinking only of the transmision drive. Sory for my goof. Frank.

A good friend of mine has been selling Mahindra tractors here in eastern Ipowa for a couple years now. He's told me lots of good things about them, like parts avaiabilaty, etc., but I really haven't taken the time to look one over yet. I've allways been pretty staunch about sticking with Blue, Green, or Orange becaus of their reliabilaty records and all have good dealer networks and parts systems. After visiting with my Mahindra dealer friend maybe after proving themselves the Red ones may join the big three. Take care of that "M" Farmall, I've only got four or five of them and might need another one someday. From another old Farmer, Frank.

From a safety standpoint don't do it. The bulk of the weight of a big round is way too far behind the 3pt. plus you're raising the center of gravity of the whole unit, (tractor+ bale) to a height that makes a narrow tread tractor pretty tippy. Just my thoughts. Frank.

AllenWilson; Welcome to Tractor Point. That's a lot of nice equipment for the money. Unless you have a special purpose for it I've really never saw much need for a winch. What few winches I've looked at seemed like a good quality brand was kind of pricey, maybe wait on the winch to see if you really need it. Have a ball with your new equipment. Frank.

kyvette; WOWZER, (thats an Iowa term), just checked your pictures you've got some neat stuff there. I really don't mean to rain on your parade but 24 HP. especially with turf tires and I'm assuming a hydro tranny you'd have to have a pretty small box blade to fit the size of your tractor. I'd have to check for sure but I think my box blade is a six foot unit with seven scarifier teeth. It's about all the 4310 Deere with R4's and FWD needs for a load, I think traction will be your biggest challenge. If you've got enough lead time on your project spray the sod with roundup a couple weeks ahead and allow the sod to die completely and you'll avoid most of the live sod clump problem while fine grading your project. I'd suggest going back to the Ford dealer and renting a bigger tractor with a properly sixed box blade for this job, I really don't recall seeing box blades small enough to match your tractor. I guess i wasn't really thinking if Art's part of the issue. Now that I think about it we have just the small #48 Deere hoe for the farm and when a bigger machine is called for we hire it done. I'm really hard pressed to think of a farmer in our aeria who doesn't own his own boe, most of them late model full sized hoes. Frank.

Itsgottabegreeen; The local Deere dealer had two 110's that he drew my attention to about six months ago, we've got two #80 dump carts that they would have looked great pulling around. As the Mrs. tells me I allready have enough "Collectables", so I passed on them. I don't remember what he was asking for them, but I did see someone loading both of them on a trailer later. Has anyone saw the new #21 dump cart built to match the HPX Gators? There supposed to be a heavy duty, lots heavier built than the old #80's. The 80's were a real good cart, we don't have a dent or ding in them yet. Frank.

fifteen ft. in a hundred ft. run is a pretty safe slope long as the slope is consistent. Wheel weights, a ballast box carried low or anything to lower your center of gravity will make it safer. Long as you have a ROPS on the tracor and wear your seatbelt you should be OK. Frank.

putput; I've never used 3pt. forks on a compact, but I have on a regular farm tractor. I really don't remember what brand they were but they did work quite well long as the terain was pretty level. I do remember thinking that a hydraulic top link for the tractor 3pt. would be real handy for leveling the forks on an uneven surface. hope this helps. Frank.

StephenR; The basic design of a hydro unit is still the same today as it was in the old Farmalls. A variable displacement radial pump powered direct from the flywheel pushes fluid into a fixed displacement radial motor. the way the flow rate is changed in the pump is by changing the angle of what is known as the swash plate. the ends of the pistons in the pump ride aganst the variable angle swash plate that is controled by your foot on the hydro pedal.
When the angle of the swash plate is 90 degrees from the axis of the pump the pistons do not move in the bore so no fluid is pumped, you're in neutral. As you push the pedal the angle of the plate increases allowing the pistons to take a longer strokes thus increasing the displacement of the pump pushing more and more fluid into the hydro motor making the fixed dispacemrnt motor spin faster, as the hydro motor spins faster thus the tractor goes faster, for reverse the plate simply angles the other direction. The Fend Co. I think from Italy started producing big farm tractors several years ago with infinitely variable speed transmissons that aren't totaly hydrostacic. In the latest 7000 series Deere now offers an IVT. This system does have a true mechanical connection, but hydro motors are used in it to control the speed of the planataries.I've studied the Deere tech manual and do understand how it works but I won't get into all that right now. In theory it really is a pretty simple system that takes a lot of the ineffeciencys of a true hydro drive out of the picture. Frank.

Never heard of a Hudson but my parents had a mower with a cast aluminim deck in the mid 50's that looked remarkably like yours called a "Cooper Cyclo Mower". I still have their Simplicity walk behind garden tractor complete with sickle mower and a pull behind cultivator. I've allways said someday I'm going to get it cleaned up, painted and all that good stuff them it will probably sit in a shed till the kids have the auction. Lot of memories with that cussed old thing. Frank.

palusjoshua; I got the canpopies early this spring so never had them in them snow. I really like them for sun protection and occasionly rain protection. I got them from Deere, the noise level did increase over a non canopy tractor so it was a simple matter to put a sheet of one inch cab foam on the under side to solve that problem. Frank.
