CraigC; About the only piece of rear mount 3pt. Compact tractor equipment that I have that isn't Land pride is a JD MX5 rotary mower which is a top notch machine, but I've allways been impressed with the rugged reliability of Land pride and their excellent dealer network. They seem a bit pricey compared to Tractor Supply type machines, but like the energizer bunny they just run and run and run. Frank.

Danielmac;The 4010-4020 series were great tractors, I had a 4010 for several years they were just a good old workhorse. There are still thousands of 4020's working daily. I've known well maintained 4020's to run 12-14,000 hours without a major overhaul. A 71 would be a side console model, those are highly sought after by collectors. Depending on condition of everything from engine, tranny, electical, tinwork, a good one will bring 9500.00, but a beat up one 4-5000.00 is tops. If the tractor needs major engine and some tranny work you can easily spend nearly what you're going to pay for it. That series used a closed center hydraulic system that can give you fits using hydraulic motors. They weren't the greatest engines to start in cold weather, but Deere has a Nipedenzo starter to spin the engine faster for easier starting. Unless someone abused them by not changing fluid and filters in the trannys, power shift models seemed to nearly never wear out, sachyncros will eventually wear the schyncro rings out but can be repalcaed. I guess one last thing I forgot to mention, if the hood has a patch in it where the tractor has had a turbocharger that has been added and then taken off at some time or if it still has a turbo, just say thanks but no thanks. It was easy to add a turbo, turn up the fuel and turn a 95 HP tractor into a 140 HP tractor. that was quite a fad for a while till high dollar parts started coming unglued. Hope this helps, Frank.

In the mid 90's we built a house on a hill along a major county road that carries about 2000 vechles per day. We live about a mile south of our hometown which is about like Mayberry on the TV. Word got around that Frank was putting up a 35 ft. tall flagpole, so one of the local WW2 vets stoped by wondering when we would raise the first flag. Some of them showed up, we hoisted the flag, they steped back, snapped to attention, and saluted. I shed a few tears over that one, so Old Glory has stood there 24/7 properly lighted since that day as an honor to our country and our vets. Frank.

Brokenarrow, yes the crop is in, up, and looking good. We were extremely fortunate right here to have missed most of last weeks flooding rains. We got a total of just over 4.5 inches, but it was spread out over about four days. Just north of us they had up to 6 inches in a four or five hour period, the erosion is terrible. I only buy black pickups so they're easy to hide in the dark, our "Real" tractors are green, so they can hide in the weeds or the woods. Our old dependables that made the money to pay for the green ones are red, they're old enough now to draw a pension and just sit in the shed and look out the windows. Just watch Iowa whup up on them cheese heads this fall, (maybe}. Iowa allways comes of the line like a race horse then lose the whole smacker in the last half of the last quarter. You'r almost asking the ultimate sacrifice form your new MMM. They were never meant to handle such conditions. When you pick up your new machine ask the dealer to rent 3pt. mount rotary mower. Even with the rotary cut it high the first trip then wait a day for the clippings to dry out then cut it again at a lower setting. If it's real heavy clippings you may have to rake them up before you're really ready for the MMM. You'll save more in replacment belts, and possible tractor damage from engine stalling when hot than the rent of a rotary cutter will cost you. "Been there, Done that." Best of luck, Frank.

Goatee; No Deere doesn't offer glow plugs, they use a 12 volt manifold heater. More than likely the newer glow plugs are more reliable than the ones I've had experience in the past, they were just a pure pain in the behind. I guess the size tractor needed depends on what your goals are for your 12 acres. If it's only mowing, snow duty, and light landscape work the 2210 will do the job, but if your thinking backhoe work, lots of l;andscape work I'd sure consider moving up to at least a 4310 or a like size in an orange or blue tractor. Is your mowing duty "Front Yard" type mowing or pasture clipping type work? Mid mount decks are pricey and a real pain to remove and re install. If your Front yard type mowing is a smaller item you can usually find a decent used rider mower for about the cost of a MMM deck and avoid all the hassle. My experience with 3pt. finish moweres has been good and I still use a Land pride for road ditch type mowing, but they just can't match the quality of cut produced by a MMM or dedicated front mount mower.

When I started my furniture business in the late 70's a man who had been in business for years working for the public said "Never let a piece you're not happy with out the door." Sometimes a customer would want something built that was nearly impossible to build and keep the cost at a reasonable level, but I learned that if you'll take the time to explain the process of how something is put together and why it would be pricey to build it exactly like the picture in their minds eye saw it 90% of the people will understand and either tell you to go ahead that they understand the costs involved, or they would scale down to where the cost was more reasonable. Most of those people turned out to be annual customers and now my Son is still serving them. I guess my whole point in this rambling is that one bad job will say more about your busines than twenty good ones, so never take on a job that you know you can't do right. Kinda like the real estate business where the buzz word is "Location, Location, etc.", working with the public it's "Communication, Communication". In one respect our two businesses are different, a pluged sewer needs to get fixed even in the rain, while we work in a more controled environment, but for both of us communicatiion is still the bigest key to success. Cherymax; I'll check that measurment today and post it. I've never owned a JD weight box, so I can't tell you much about them. I bought a box blade instead of a weight box for ballast. Kwschumm; I really don't even know what a Pat's Easy Hitch is. I guess my defense to the adjustable top hook is that it cost's about the same as an I-Match, you don't have the expense of modifying equipment that won't fit and unless you have a hyd adjustable top link it is very rare that the alignment of the hitch for one machine lines up with the next machine, so 99% of the time have to get off the tractor any way to hook up the PTO, close the hitch latches, or to check that everything is hooked up properly. The terms live and independent usually mean the same thing. There are three basic types of PTO drives. first is the Independent or live whichever you choose to call it where the PTO is driven directly from the engine controled by it's own clutch. You can stop or reverse travel of the tractor with a foot clutch, hydro pedal or whatever and the PTO doesn't stop till you shut it off with it's own control switch or lever. Second is the transmission driven PTO where the PTO and the transmission are both driven by the same engine clutch,. When you push the clutch the PTO stops when the forward travel of the tractor stops, I don't think this type is avaliable on hydro transmission tractors. Third is called a two stage engine clutch. On those when the engine clutch is pushed part way the forward travel stops, then by pushing the pedal all the way down the PTO stops. I don't know if any body uses this type any more, some regular farm tractors from back in the post WW2 era thru the fiftys used this system. There may be other systems that I'm not aware of, but I think these three cover 99% of all brands. Hope this helps, Frank.

The subject of hydro vs. gear has been hashed several times in the past, In reallity that's one of the neat things about our country, you're free to buy whatever you like best. Yes I'm pretty much a gearhead. I get much more enjoyment reading the JD tech manual for a tractor than any movie that's ever been produced, again another privledge we're blessed with living in a free country. I grew up driving grain trucks with the old two speed rear axle and no sycnchro trannys, so you had to learn to double clutch real fast or coast to a stop and start over. To this day I will not buy a pickup with and auto transmission, I just enjoy shifting gears and still catch myself double clutching and shifting without the clutch. Just my thing I guess. Frank.

Hydros will run quite hot under heavy drawbar load, but if you were only mowing with a MMM it should'nt get hot enough to produce steam. I agree with what has allready been said about a remote valve being in a position to run fluid back thru the relief valve, that will cause lots of heat buildup fast. Another thing I thought about is the possibility of a hose being kinked off or a line that has been crushed that feeds the hyd fluid radiator in front of the engine radiator to cool it. I know basicly nothing about Kubotas, but I'd assume every mfgr. uses a fluid cooler on their hydro tractors. Frank.

I don't have any experience with Kobota engines, so I'll just give you some guidelines I've learned with past experiences with oil in the coolant. Being oil pressure at operating speed is greater than coolant pressure there has to be somewhere that a crack has developed or a seal has failed. If this engine uses a water to oil oil cooler they can develop a leak and let the oil pressure force oil into the coolant, those can be pressure tested. I had a Ford gasoline engine once that had a hole drilled too close to an oil gallery, over time a leak developed into the water jacket of the engine. I don't know if your engine has wet or dry cylinder liners, but usually if a wet sleeve cavitates or a lower sleeve O ring fails the coolant will go to the oil. Your water pump may be gear driven from the timing gear set, I've also had this happen that the seal on the shaft of the water pump will fail, but again the coolant will go to the oil. I'm only giving you general possibilitys that apply to most engines, not a real answer. Best of luck. Frank.

Ridgerunner; I don't know a thing about irrigation pumps, but I have welded hooks on the top of the bucket of my 430 loader. First I welded a two and one half by eight inch piece of quarter inch plate on the top of the bucket for reinforcment then welded the hooks to them about three inches in from each end of the bucket. Others prefer a single hook in the center of the bucket to avoid springing the loader frame from hooking to only one end of the bucket. I may add a third hook in the center for that reason, so far I just make sure that both hooks are suporting what I'm lifting. good luck, Frank.

Chris; Your JD dealer is right, in 98% of all the things you'll use the tractor for you'll never notice the difference betwen a 4310 and a 4410. The 3pt. lift specs, hydraulic specs, etc. are identical. The only reason I chose a 4410 for the second unit is for operating PTO powered grain augers during harvest where sometimes the 4310 just was'nt quite enough to keep up full capacity. I did consider going to the large frame 4000 ten series, but thought it might be a bit clumbsy for mowing etc.. I think the cost of the 4 way is about right to be Deere equipment. As I remember the bucket was in the 11 to 1200 range and the third valve and line kit for the tractor that are needed to operate the clam cylinders on the bucket brought the price up to about where you are. There may be a newer brochure out now on the 4000 ten series tractors that show the 4 in one bucket, but when I bought mine in December it was too new an item to be in print form yet. My dealer got all the info from Deere in a FAX to show me some pictures and the specs of the 4 in one. I just checked the Deere website for Australia and it wasn't shown there either, but I'm sure your dealer could get same info that mine did. the first 4 in one bucket is ever saw was one built by the Drott Co. back in the late 1950's, for crawlers so the idea has been around for a long time. The Deere unit is basicly just a minature version of a Drott. I've yet to find flaw with the one I have and would have a hard time parting with it. I'm sure there are other brands being built that will fit the 430 loader, but I've allways just felt better about having attachments that were designed by the same people who designed the base unit you're mounting it to. I've spent the last couple afternoons mowing road ditches and waterways around the farms with the 4410 and the MX5 rotary cutter, that's my way of relaxing, hope you find that too. Frank.

Sorry, I did'nt understand you were having the grunt work on the pond done by heavy equipment. That makes the 4310/430 loader a real neat outfit for your needs. A 3pt. box scraper will also speed things along when you get to moving soil around, and also elimenates the need to buy a 3pt. weight box for the loader. Frank.

Brokenarrow; If it's only to prevent rust and for your own use use the original Ford paint and the primer they recommend, and paint it yourself for basicly the cost of the paint and decals. I've painted a tractor or two. the first thing I learned is that brand X thinner won't work with brand Y paint, I had green cottage cheese using a generic thinner in JD paint. My painting skills are good enough to prevent rust and have it look good from the road, but on my collector tractors I have it professionaly done using the correct primer, original paint and a hardner. The only time the collector tractors are in the sunshine is for a parade or a show otherwise they are inside. My what I'll call maintinence paint jobs soon fade and look kinda tough but they are protecting the machune. Frank.
