From what I've learned of the dime store Deere moweres, they are kind of a high dollar throw away mower.
It really surprises me that Deere who is so fussy about what their logo appears on would allow the reputation of their real lawn equipment be dragged down selling junk with their name on it.
Anything for a buck I guess.

The soil type near the house is just too heavy and black for garden use, great for corn, but not garden.
We have a sand hill probably 5-600 ft. from the garden, so this spring one bucket at a time with the 4310 I brought in enough sand to cover the garden plot 30X50?? about four-five inches deep, then tilled it in and ended up with a lot better garden soil.
Point being, probably 20 yd. of sand, I don't have a clue how many trips, but like Murf said, faster than God put it where it was, and I had fun doing it.

I have sat on docks at sunset listening to the loons, saw other mountains from the top of Pikes Peak, all neat things and glad I've saw them.
Now for an old Iowa corn farmer, just stitting out on a bench on a warm summer night hearing the corn grow is music. Yes you can hear corn grow, it pops and snaps on a warm dead still night.

Wow, I think it's time I see a shrink, I'm agreeing with EW just too much lately.
Back in my furniture plant days we used the "Torsion Box" design for lots of heavy cabinet type things where an external frame would have been ugly or just not desireable. Torsion box furniture/unibody automobile = same principle, the furniture/automoblie uses the skin of the shell as the frame. Less expensive to build, stronger tha a frame plus the cabinet/auto body. I'm not an engineer, I'm not even sure I spelled engineer correctly, just learned most everything I know at the school of hard knocks, or out behind the barn.
So chest pounding or not, that's just my two cents worth, well I gusse it costs five cents now. Frank.

Ask around at farm equipment dealerships. I've gotten rebuilt seats from the local Deere dealer. they have an outlet for someone who exchanges worn out seats for rebuilts. I've gotten several for my old Farmalls from them.

Fw; Raider is right some had a problem. We had every series except the ticycle and the electric Gators. The XUV we had had your symptoms, hard to start and keep running till it was fully warmed up. Our XUV with fuel injection is just like your car, no choke, no sputter, purrs like a kitten from the gitgo.
I'm sure Deere is working on an improved model of the XUV, but I'd be hard pressed to think of anything to make them much better.

We have a road ditch bank in front of the farm house that is probably 35 ft. top to bottom, just guessing a 40% grade.
I used to mow it with the 4310 and an RMFM going up hill only then across the front yard back to the bottom and up again.
It wasn't an issue of being able to climb the grade with R4's in 4 WD, but the Mrs. has forbid me to do it anymore. I don't have enough life insurance to attract a second husbsand, she says she wants all the little critters to have a home on the praire, I guess.
I watch those smiling young ladies on the TV pushing the mighty DR weed and brush mower on steep slopes, no doubt they are a good mower, it just don't look like all that much fun to me.

So far this morning I spammed free a fifty something inch plasma TV, wonder if there was catch somewhere in this deal? HUMM.
Now if they would just give me a lifetime supply of Miller Genuine Draft and some chips, I'd be all set to watch the Cubs blow it again.

KW, before hydros came along combines used the variable speed belt design you describe. WE never had much trouble with them, but more maintenece was involved than hydros.

I'd agree with your pump man on the submersible, I've had submersibles in the well for thirty years with never an electrical problem and I'll agree water and electricity don't mix but they seem to have a system that works.

Far a needing a pressure tank, I'd think that as long as the sprinkler system has a greater capacity for using the water than the pump has for producing the water that things would work OK. Having a pressure guage on the line coming out of the well might be a good idea just to be sure you aren't overloading the puimp.

No, I'm not upset with anyone, I get a bit carried away with my opinions now and then.
I was beginning to think that EW aws starting to see the light, but it looks like the helmets wiil get banged around a bit.
At coffee today a couple fellows were discussing crawler tractors so I perked an ear up. One of the guys said he had recently traded an ancient crawler with not even a reverser, just shift gears for every move type machine for a newer Deere hydro drive, ( I don't remember the model number of his Deere). Anyhow he says his Deere hydro is just the cat's pajammas compared to the old machine.
This is prime time spraying season here in the cornbelt and I did think about that every HiBoy type sprayer built in the last 25 years are compleely hydro drive wirh a drive motor in each wheel hub.
So after all the smoke has cleared we all win with our preferences. So far we have choices in our inputs, I wonder sometimes how long before big brother will TELL us what we can buy/have/posess/shoot/drive/drink/etc./etc..

I've never heard of that brand so I can't comment on them. Iowa is a long way from Maryland but as an example there is a 60 in. Landpride on Craigslist today from Cedar Rapids for 1200.
I have quite a bit of Landpride equipment myself and know their stuff to be top drawer.

I don't know if you can buy a new Deere or any other brand combine as a "Plain Jane" anymore without all the electronic gizmo's.
My last combine was a Deere 9610 with an eight row cornhead and thirty ft. cutterbar, I think it was a 98 or 99 model. Last fall I rode with our tennant who had a new Deere with all the dodads, pretty amazing what all instant information it shows and stores in the computer on yield, moisture content, acres done, number of bushels harvested plus it steers itself. Hard to imagine what they will be like in ten years from now.
I didn't ask him what it cost, but I'm sure a quarter million wouldn't have bought it.

My Grandfather's brother, what ever relation that is to me had a steam engine and a "Seperator", as they called a threshing machine that he pulled from farm to farm in the late 1800's till in the 1930's. I have no idea what brand they were but my Dad said that it took a long time for the thing to get from farm to farm pulling the threshing machine down the road.
My grandfather's first tractor was a Fordson, and my Father's first was a "B" Farmall that he farmed 120 acres with. My first was a Super "M" Farmall, a giant compared to the "B".
I still have a "Cub" Farmall, in the same class as the little Deere in the picture, about 8 or 9 HP. I think. I get it out once in a while just to keep it limbered up.

Long time ago I bought an old pull type rotary cutter on an auction, it wasn't much but it did work for a while till the shaft on the bottom of the gearcase broke and the whole shootin match came flying out from under the thing, thank
God it went out the back. After looking the situation over it was clear the shaft had been broken before I bought it and welded together by someone. Another of my nine lives used up, I think I'm up to about fifty by now.

There are all kinds of opinions on the use of corn to produce ethanol for fuel use. I haven't kept up to date on the number of bushels now being used for ethanol, but it is increasing every year. There are those who think it is wrong to use a grain to produce fuel that could be used to feed people. Another group says the feeding corn to livestock is wrong, yes it would be more effecient to feed corn diretly to people rather than produce meat with it, but how many people would like to eat cornbread or corn mush every day rather than meat? Agreed there are people here and in other countrys who are hungry, but usually the political system of other countrys is a roadblock to getting food to the hungry.
Without a catostropic worldwide weather event we will not run out of corn. The genetic traits of modern corn hybrids, the vast improvments in soil, water, and nutrient care and useage, plus the management abilitys of the producers have raised average yields to levels we thought pie in the sky just a decade ago. Without doubt the average yields of today will look limp ten years from now.
Supply and demand will dictate how much corn or any other grain will be used for ethanol.
