Joel; I have a friend whom along with his brother operate a pretty good sized farm, truck, and auto tire outlet. Last time I walked thru their shop there were probably a dozen signs hung where no enployee could say he didn't see it. They all read "All lug bolts or nuts WILL be hand tightened with a torque wrench according to book specs". Seems they ruined too many high dollar wheels and warped too many brake discs with the air wrenches. Frank.

Nemo; I just gotta ask. What are you going to use all that power for, speed or pulling power? I've never saw the inside of a Gator transmission, but I bet they aren't built to stand half what you are asking it to handle.

Hettric: How far is the machine throwing the snow and how far do you think it should? I'm not really up on housing to blade clearance, but much closer than 3/8'ths. might be hard to do without ballance problems etc. on a fan rebuild.

Gary; What series Gator do you have, and what part are you calling the secondary clutch? Tell us more about where this clutch is in the drive train.

Maybe someone else who saw the same program can help me a bit here. The original design was updated by another engeneering firm who removed several thousand puonds of steel reenforcment plates at the welded joints of the rafter. Their contention was that the plates didn't add enough strength to compensate for their own weight. Anybody wanna sit under this deal during a windstorm?

KW; I'm all for scientific research that deals with helping to solve disease, hunger, and other current problems. It just seems such a waste of time, talent, and money to pay these folks to speculate on what the world will be like in six million years.

We haven't had as much snow as last year but when we did have it there were hardly any snowmobiles going past compared to last winter. We have a groomed trail right past our house that they did groom this year, but maybe two or three at a time compared to 25 - 30 at a time last year. Smowmobiles can be fun and entertaining to lots of folks, but I wondered if the slimmer times have cut back the snowmobile budgets? The news media which loves bad news of course, has been telling us how bad off we are, maybe if we just turned the TV off at ten o'clock we wouldn't know we were bad off. No matter how old your kids are you still worry about them, so far all five of ours assure me their jobs are solid, lets hope so. Frank.

There wouldn't be enough room for a taller tire under the cargo box to be of much help. My XUV will run on the plus side of thirty, and to me that is plenty fast. As EW eluded to they weren't meant to be a speed wagon, but more of a plow horse type machine. I don't know about other insurance carriers but our carrier still considers them a farm machine not a recreational machine because of their restricted speed ability, so no special insurance is required. Google "Farm Tires" for lots of sources if you can mount them yourself. Otherwise there should be local farm tire dealers listed in your yellow pages. Happy New year. Frank.

Auer; To make an "M" Farmall into a more modern tractor I added on a pump driven by the belt pulley hub. It had way too much volume, you had to nearly idle the engine to have usefull hydraulic flow. It had a presssure guage in the line from the pump outlet to the valve body. Far from necessary but it was kind of interesting to watch the guage. If I remember correctly the pump was a 35 GPM pump, at full engine speed it so overwhelmed the valve body that with no pressure being used and all the flow going only back to the sump the guage would read 35-40 PSI.

Ok, now that we all feel better after blowing off a bit of steam let's just sit back and wait for Santa. I might get a new gear drive tractor, Murf and EW might get one with a marshmallow box, all them runn9ng at the desired idle of the new owners. Who is Larry the cable guy??? Does he have a tractor running at full idle?? Merry Christmas.

EW; It's amazing, now and then I actually agree with you. Of all the cars and pickup trucks I've owned from my beloved 49 Hudson right on thru the 07 Trailblazer and 07 Silverado, the only problem car I ever owned was a 90 sometning Venture van. It was built with a plastic intake manifold that warped after a while. I was dumb enough to let a Chevy dealer who shold have never been a dealer of anything (FIX??) it. I can't believe he is still in business. While the Venture was there I walked thru the service building, he has eigthteen service bays, all equiped with hoists and my Venture was the only car in there, he had seventeen bays that were empty.
Now on to other things. Our new high effeciency LP furnace, the heat exchanger burned thru before the third season. The ten year factory warranty replaced it, yep, with another one that burned thru in three more years. Now, if you've ever read the fine print in the factory warranty, I didn't, but anyhow they furnish the parts, YOU pay a couple flunkys they sent out eighty bucks an hour to replace it, over 600 bucks. That didn't happen the second time.
Fast food, yes, like eating out of a garbage can in most of them, enough on that.
All our great old mainstreet stores are gone thanks to WalMart, I could rant on this one for an hour, but I won't.

KW; Maybe you have a neighbor who loves to plow/blow snow and bake him/her lots of cookies. I plowed for several years with a pickup plow for cookies, who ever made the best cookies got plowed first. Merry christmas. Frank.

If they ever hold a Wacko convention I have a relative they will elect king, he eats up all the BS like it's free lunch at a Hobo picnic. Seriously we do need to clean up our act a bit, but these extreme Wackos usually aren't old enough to have saw what we've already done to clean up before they were born. The sad part of it is that most of these extremests are from wealthy familys and don't have to work for a living, so why not protest something even if they don't have a clue about what they are protesting. A prime example is whom ever got it into law that a horse cannot be slauightered even for pet food must think that letting them wander to either be hit by trains, trucks, or starve to death is more humane. Go figgure???? Frank.

How cold is it? Hydraulics and hydraulic controled clutches like the PTO clutch in your tractor can be real slow at extreme cold temps, like 25 below or so. I assume your tractor is a hydro drive, does the hydro work ok? Is the blower a three point rear mount or front mount? Give us a more detailed description and hiopefully someone here can help you out. Merry Christmas. Frank.

Back to Yuppie's original question whether to keep it or fix it. If you can't get an honest estimate on fixing it that is in the 5-600.00 range or less I think I'd quit throwing money at a lawnmower. A recent rebuild engine should have some salvage value on E-Bay or somewhere like that. There are zillions of good used mowers in that size range for sale some probably with a bit of warranty from an orange, green, or blue dealer. Merry Christmas. Frank.

As to whether the old cylinder is worth saving is questionable, a new one isn't real high compared to most other repair parts. Cando has it nailed on the method, I've welded quite a bit of cast including engine blocks. I haven't bought any nickle rod for a while but I imagine it has gotten pricey too by now. Merry Christmas. Drawing on my experience helping in my Fathers gas station when studded tires were the new thing putting studs in used tires didn't work very well. The little holes where you shot the studs into would get packed full of dirt. The studs have a little flange on the end that holds them in the hole, and there is a grouve in the bottom of the hole to fit the flange on the stud. Getting the dirt out of the grouve in the bottom of this hole was all but impossible.
