My parents ran a Mom and Pop Standard Oil station for years, so I got plenty of part time tire experience. I knew about the cold temp pressure drop and all that from my tire days there, but with todays electronics it seems that an outside air tempreture sensor would be a simple part of the monitor system and compensate for it. You know, the old, "If they can send a man to the moon etc., etc."

As Greg said you my have a pickup screen that is clogged. If the fluid has appeared milky that is a good indication of water in the fluid. A pickup screen will ice over with water and starve a pump. If you can get the tractor in a warm building for several days till everything internally is warm then drain it and replace with new fluid and filters. I have no knowledge of your specific tractor, but check your owhers manual for the instructions on cleaning the pickup screen. Merry Christmas. Frank.

Auer is on the right track, I use a set of Gator blades and just keep running over them till they are dust. Any of those chute blocking gizmoa I've been around didn't do anything only plug the deck up. The gator blades didn't impress me much in regular mowing but they sure grind up leaves and walnuts.

Check with a machine shop. There are sources for piston blanks to machine to your spec's.

We have to pay the state for the seedlngs here, but they're pretty cheap. The ones we got came in bundles of like 25 or so. The soil conservation service used to have a tree planter for rent too. I never rented it myself but neighbors did and said it worked quite well.

I know nothing about the different specie of evergreen shrubs but the county just north of me recommends planting small trees/shrubs/some sort of evergreens between the lines of a filter bed from your septic tank in difficult soils. Their story is that by using the proper evergreen with a small root system the roots will not spread into the lines but will help transpire moisture from the bed. Plant a willow within a half mile and I'd almost bet the roots would plug the filter bed.

Mud can be thrown in both directions, don't the folks in Alabama who pay taxes have a stake in this too? As I understand todays banter fifteen billion is the upper limit with a government watchdog overseeing how the cash is spread around. Some say keep the government out of it, but remember who government is, we are furnishing the jack and hopefully expect it back someday, so this "Watchdog" better be a pretty accountable person, or preferably a committe. If we don't do this I can see some undesireable mid east money just waiting for a chance to get control of the big three.

Our daughter took a group of grade school kids to the Spam museum in Austin Minn., she said it's worth seeing. They have a couple Spam mobiles that are motorhomes that look like a giant Spam can that roam the country doing parades and such giving away Spam. I haven't seen the Oscar Meyer "Weinermobile" lately, someone said thay have a big tandem axle diesel winermobile now. If we hadn't had an ice storm overnight I'd go to the store for a can of spam, you guys are making me hungry.

Kind of a neat idea, probably if the tractor wheel was spinning on ice they would fly out to get under the tire. The whole mechanisim that holds the little wheel with the chains on looks too close to the road to not get messd up in deeper snow.

Thank goodness we Catholics have been liberated from the Friday fish thing. We seldom had fish as a kid, the fish that you didn't have to hold your nose to eat was just to pricey for us, so it was boiled beans or eggs on Friday. The lamb you mention reminds me of my Father, he wouldn't allow it in the house, I guess they ate too many old ewes as a kid and just couldn't stand it anymore. I do like good fish, which the wife won't cook or eat either, so it's off to a good resturant where they have good fish for me and anything but fish for the Mrs.

Jamie; You don't say much else about the tractor, but you are only asking about the transmission difference. Is the manual more rugged? Probably not, most hydros are pretty bullet proof anymore, any less rugged, again probbaly not. I've driven CUT's with hydros and personally never liked them so four tractors later I still have a gear drive and when I update again it will be another gear without hesitation. Enjoy your day. Gatoraider; The spline shaft zerk you speak of I grease about every day if we're using tne Gator to pick up rocks or doing anything when the fields are dusty. I've never had a problem with it or any of the other problems that have been mentioned here but the old theroy of "Grease is free compared to parts" kicks in for me whenever a lubed componet of any kind is exposed to excess dust ot water. I know I've said this here before, but I've owned every series Gator they ever built except the tricycle electric models and have never had a bad one yet, I wouldn't trade my XUV for a boatload of anything else. Truss; I'm 100% for the small guy taking on Deere to undersell, or over engeneer them on a roll cage. Just coming from my own experience of owning a furniture manufacturing plant from the mid seventys till I closed it down in Jan. of 05 the first person you need to visit is an insurance agent who is familliar with busniess insurance. When I first opened the place it wasn't a big issue, but as years went along it became one of my biggest expenses. Even working alone the liability thing comes into play if you sell even one roll cage with your name on it, hopefully things will move along to where you need help. Family help is kinda "Iffy" in the insurance world, some don't mind, others will make a big issue of it. Then full time help comes into play, OK, hang onto your shorts now. I really hope you can make it work and I truly encourage you, but just thought I'd kinda forewarn you of what wiil be your biggest expense, the steel and bolts, etc. will be peanuts in comparison. I never once had a claim from anything or anybody I was invo9lved with in the business,"BUT" Frank

Quite a while ago a fellow came around the neighborhood with a home made looking PTO powered stump grinder on the three point of a 7 or 806 Farmall tractor. It had no curtians, sheilds, or safety looking devices of any kind. I watched him grind a couple stumps in town, the thing threw chips, dirt, rocks, chunks of stump all over the place. He and a couple kids that were with him did a pretty good job of cleaning up after and hauled the stuff away. I don't remember what he charged, but it didn't seem like much at the time. Never saw him before or since. Even after seeing that disaster waiting to happen looking thing operate for some unknown reason I still kinda always wanted one, but the Mrs. long ago put the kebosh to that idea.

I dont know much about the laws of Iowa let alone other states, but a couple things I have known about and been involved with are. First a case of a private individual selling an eighty acres that somehow left another person with fourty some acres landlocked by the sold eighty on one side and a river on the other. The new owner refused to give the owner of the fourty access across his newbought eighty. OK, push came to shove, and the court sided with the fourty acre guy giving him access at anytime across anyplace he chose to cross the eighty. The county regraded the road along some of our property about ten years ago, they wanted to move the right of way over into our field to straighten out a crook in the road. They asked me if I would sell the land for the road change, I said no, no harsh words were spoken, they went away, graded the road with the crook in it and that was the end of the story. Kind of amazed me. Frank.

RED; I don't have a NH, but the fuel and temp gauge problems are usuall faulty ground related on any brand, the rest I'm in the dark on.

A man was killed just last week here in eastern Iowa when a combine cornhead he was working under fell on him. There are safety lockup devices on every combine to prevent this from happening, whether or not he had the safety device in place I don't know. Anything mechanical can fail even lockup devices, it's not likely, but possible. Most likely he got under without locking the cornhead up to adjust or unclog something, I've been guilty of the same thing, you are in a hurry and so what those hydraulic cylinders and hoses have held the cornhead up for twenty years it won't fail now. I like Joel have had plenty of close calls and did dumb things to put my life in danger mainly from being in a hurry.
