LRA; Please fix the tractor before you get hurt. I'm quite sure they have a dry disc clutch plate which has likely gotten stuck to the transmission spline shaft and won't slide. This isn't a real high dollar repair if norhing else is damaged. I'm sure you are headed for some real high dollar repairs if you keep forcing the transmission in gear as you are now, not to mention the safety issue involved. Frank.

Just a bit of history on the driveway to the house here at the farm. We built the house ten years ago in an open field, no driveway of any kind. there were no drainage issues to get water away from the drive so with no prior grading we put a layer of two inch washed limerock about six inches thick, then on top a layer of one inch washed rock. We drove on just that for a year or so till it settled. Since that I have two tandems of one inch "Roadstone" we call it here meaning the fines are left in with the rock spread about every other spring, that gives me a new layer about four to five inches thick. It just seems to be getting more solid every year. right now the drive is about 12-14 inches above the lawn along either side of it. That seems to be high enough that very little snow gets on the drive, it mostly just blows across it. Frank.

Just thinking back a bit about the 4X2 we had, It was a "Workhorse", not a "Racehorse". It worked well picking up field rocks, hauling seed, four or five small squares of hay or most anything to or from the field or around the farmyard, kinda a mobile toolbox too. They were a bit underpowered tho. Have you checked the varible speed belt and the sheaves? Sometimes the sheave on the transmission end of the belt will get sticky from dirt etc geting into the hub of the sliding half allowing the belt to slip a bit, some solvent can do wonders for that. Don't know if I'd call it a "Dress Up" item, but Deere does sell a real neat toolbox that fits across the front of the Gator cargo box simalar to a toolbox like behind the cab of your pickup. I've got one on my XVU Gator, I don't know if they fit the TS models or not, but it sure is a neat clean way to always have some out of the weather tools along. Frank.

Saturday was as nice as it gets around here so I reseeded with Kentucky Bluegrass with my little John Deere areiatior seeder combo. The fertilizer shipment hasn't got to the elevator yet so I'll put that on later. I never was real happy with the little plastic lawn roller we had so I bought a bigger steel drum model made by Agri-Fab, it weighs about half a ton when loaded with water. The 345 mower seemed a bit unsafe going down hill so I used the Gator, it handled it nicely. The new heavier roller sure did a nice job, guess I should have had it long ago. Frank.

Mine is pretty simple, I just drive to a nearby station. No storage, no liability. I do keep a five gallon can around in case it is too cold to ride my "Baby Deere" to town. Frank.

PM; There are cams in the hub of the driven sheave that sometimes just get sticky from dirt, etc. If I remember correctly you can see the cams in sort of triangle openings in the hub on the sheave half that slides in and out on the hub. With the engine off and the transmission in neutral spray some solvent, (WD-40 or the like), in the triangle slots while rotating the sheave till it gets worked in good. So far this hasn't been a problem on my XVU, but the HPX and the 4X2 I owned pror the the XUV neede a spray of solvewnt once in a while. Frank.

Murf; Wow, you really like to get into the numbers, maybe you could help my wife ballance her checkbook. "Meanwhile back at the ranch", using your numbers my guess comes out almost right on the schmacker. I just love to mow grass so I only go about 2.5 mph just to make the job last longer so maybe my one inch guess is right on the mark. Frank.

I really haven't kept up that well to know if the hydraulic systems are identical or not, but my 4310 with a 430 loader and 48 backhoe have to be a real close cousin to your 3320. I've got to wonder if there is something that can be adjusted to change the sensitivity level of the controls. I've been real pleased with mine, you can just creep the hoe bucket along something you don't want to destroy, or dump the loader bucket ever so easy when dumping crushed rock or sonething like that. Have you talked to the dealer's service manager? Get it adjusted and you will be a happy camper. Frank.

Dennis; I kinda knew these were coming, from a very anonomys source, word is they also are working on the next generation of these that has no operator in the cab. It can run grade and the whole bit from an operator sitting in pickup with a laptop. I kinda wonder if it would know the difference between a rock and soil??? Not from this person, but I've also heard of a progran to develop a farm tractor that provides all the tractive power to the wheels in the same way as a railroad locomotive works, no gear transmission at all just a generator and wheel motors. those of you who are around in fifty years will likely laugh at the crude equipment we were using in 2008. Bernie; Sometimes a leaky seal can mean a loose bearing directly behind it. Just clean the shaft and general aeria around the seal and pry it out with a screwdriver, then check the shaft for a loose bearing. If all is well just tap the new seal onto place. If you can see a part number on the old seal before you destroy it you can get one from Deere or any parts outlet tha handles seals, or a Deere dealer can look it up without the old one. Frank.

I won't comment on the price as I don't keep up well enough on the subject, but it does seem there is a lot of equipment with it that is pretty pricey stuff to buy new. 550 hours isn't enough on a well maintained tractor to be of much consequence, there should be lots of good hours left before any major overhaul is required. Far as gear drive is concerned. I too was a lifelong farmer growing up on gear drives, so to me gear drives are just more of a natural on a tractor of any size. You mention that you have a Deere 345 mower with hydro drive, we have two of them and just love them, but they are a lawn mower not a tractor. I'm on my third Deere compact gear drive and will get another gear if I trade again. Personally I would almost give a bit of a premium to get a gear drive. Frank.

LD; I'm sure that every 4000 series owner here including me has spilled plenty of diesel on the hood, so I having a hard time believing that diesel fuel is the culprit. Have you checked the alignment of the hood hinges to be sure there is no unusual twist that would cause stress cracks when it is in the down position with the front latch locked? There has to be some reason that can be corrected before you break another hood. Frank.

Brian; I had mine dealer installed on my 4300 then the dealer transferred them to my 4310 when I traded tractors. If you are at all handy with wrenches and have the time there is no reason you can't install them yourself. My hoe is a model 48, so I'm not certain the mounting brackets are the same, but I would assume they are close. There have been issues with broken mounting bolts by a few people with most all problems traced back to using the wrong bolts and at an improper torque setting. The NEW bolts that should come with the mounting package are longer than the bolts they replace and of a definite tensle strength. Be absolutely sure you use the proper bolts and at the factory torque specs. Good luck. Frank.

Murf; My misunderstanding. I assumed you were talking about a Deere 4 wheel steer, instead you were refering to a Kubota. OK the Deere models I have looked at are the X724's with the 62C MMM mower. I want to stay with the tractor type instead of the zero turns for the same reasons you gave. thanks, Frank.

Sorry I don't know how your belt goes on but sometimes on the deck or under the belt shield there will be a pattern of the belt. If you have an owners manual it will show you and maybe even tell you the part number of the proper belt. Happy Easter. Frank.

Denver; If it is a gaoline engine use John Deere Turf Guard, comes in quart bottles. If it is a diesel then call the Deere dealer for his advice. Some had engine oil filters, some didn't, check to be sure. Frank.

I've never eaten at a Fridays, but have really backed off at McDonalds, Hardies, etc., the last Wendys we ate at even the floor was greasy. Kinda scares me to eat out anymore, most of our national chain resturants are a disgrace. One of our boys worked at a High Dollar national resturant chain during college, some of the things he told will turn your stomach. Things like meat falling on the floor and just picked up and put on the plate, seveal times he saw food that was sent back that the cook spit on before it went back to the table, water glasses reused and never washed, we never eat at national chains anymore, just local places in small towns where I know the cook.
