Cutter; Congradulations on your new to you hoe. That's not a lot of hours on a well maintained hoe. I've always been plenty generous with the grease on the bucket pins using just common grease. last time I was at the Deere store they now have a special grease meant for bucket pins, I don't know how it is different but I got a couple tubes to try.

EW; Hominy, sometimes called hominy grits is somehow soaked in lye to remove the hull of the kernel. The kernels swell up and it remains whole as it comes in a tin can at the store packed in water. You drain it fry it in butter, pretty good stuff. Frank.

Mowing is very relaxing now that I don't have to take away from "Work Time" to mow. This spring we added another acre of lawn plus rejuvinated the old part. A special thanks to Murf for his advice on the "How To" of it all, looks great Murf. Frank.

Farm equipment salvage yards will have used wheels, altho some may not be much better than what you have so look them over carefully. Most any good sized tire shop that handles farm tires will have a source for new wheels for almost any application also. Frank.

Chris; Sliding doors have lots of negatives compared to an overhead. Number one is the wind. First unless you use a lower track to hold the bottom of the door against the shed both while open or closed the wind loves to swing and bang them around. Second, if you are in snow country they can be a problem to slide open when snow and ice build up along the building where the door slides. Third, if you plan to insulate the building it's pretty hard to get much of a seal between the door frame and the doors when they are closed and still have enough clearance for them to slide freely along the side of the building. I've never had any doors with the design you speak of, but a common sliding door track, track cover, rollers and lower track and the door material it's self even with the design you like don't seem like should cost that much. If you can make an overhead door work it will eliminate 99% of the problems of a sliding door. Frank.

james; I just came in from crawling under the 4310 looking at how the subframe is attached, then got out my service manual and did more checking. If I understand you correctly the final drive housings you break are on the left hand side of the tractor, looking at the tractor from behind. There are 8 cap screws 6 long and 2 short ones plus two alignment pins holding the housing to the transmission case. Standing beside the tractor facing the left rear wheel the backhoe subframe is held on by four of the long cap screws at the eleven, one, three, and five o'clock positions, correct? As I understand you the capscrews in those four positions break leaving a chunk of the housing still attached to the transmission case by one long and one short cap screw at the bottom. The four capscrews that hold the subframe on should hae been longer bolts furnished with the subframe, were the proper bolts used, correct hardness, etc. The assembly instructions also state that loctite must be used on the threads when bolting the housing to the transmission case, was it used? I'm now quite suspicious that either the wrong bolts were used, not properly tourqued, no loctite, etc. You also mention that the same dealership has had several incidents of the same problem as yours, did the same tech. do all the subrame instalations that failed? With probably less than a one in ten thousand failure rate, how many of this model backhoe did the dealrship sell? I doubt the even the biggest of dealerships have sold more than a half dozen of the #48's on a 4000 series tractor, that is a horendeous failure rate for one dealership. Something is definitely fishy here with the proper assembly of these failed units. Don't give up, get to the "Head Shed" at Deere, there is a way right on their website to get there, I've been there done that, you will get results with a legitimite complaint. Tell them what's going on in a business man like manner and you will be surprised at the results you will get. Frank.

I had a plow on a pickup, it did fine till the really hard packed stuff, then it needed help. I used to have an 8ft. blower on a 100 HP tractor when we were on the farm, that was a great machine, but with a shorter, (100 ft.) driveway now I sold it and use the 4310 and loader. With a pickup plow you need a good pickup that will start on a cold snowy morning and a plow for it can be a 3-4500 dollar deal unless you find a used one. So if you really don't need a pickup for other things this is a pricey way to go. A 500 ft. driverway with a little 3-4 ft. blower on a 25 HP. tractor with no cab working in the dark will get old fast. If you are buying a tractor and loader anyway use the loader for cleanup after work and have a guy with a pickup plow do the early morning get you to work plowing. When I had the pickup plow I had several folks who had me "Get them to Work" plow at 5 or 6 in the morning and they would trim up after work with their loader or a shovel in the daylight. I usually have the quarry deliver a load of crushed limestone about this time of year and use it to scatter on the ice, that seems to break it up after driving over it a few times, plus it keeps the salt out of the lawn. Kleinchris; I just checked the Deere website. It looks like the #48 hoe is still a current model. They show subrame kits available for 4300 thru the 4720's and also for the 5105 thru the 5403 series tractors. I did not price a three point hoe before I bought the 48, but I would assume being you aren't getting the subframe that a three point hoe would be less expensive. There has been some discussion here in the past about difficulty with the three point arms of the tractor failing to lift the hoe assembly high enough to insert the mounting pins, but I've never had that problem yet. Perhaps that is what is causing you to take more time. Ten minutes including the time for removasl of the three point hitch lower and center arms is an easy do for mouinting. Frank.

I would have to dig to find the exact figures now, but in August 2005 we had a farm closing out sale to dispose of our farm equipment. At the time I had two Deere compacts the 4310 I still own and a 4410. The 4410 had aprox 250 hours equiped with a 430 loader, 12/12 power reverser, Deere canopy, third valve, quick coupler, etc. At public auction it brought a tick either side of two thousand dollars more than I paid for it new, I bought it new equiped just as it sold, nothing was added after I bought it, and I had nobody running up the bids. So sometimes auctions can go the opposite way when you are bargan hunting. Frank.

The tarp is fine, just make sure some air can circulate between the tarp and the machine to take out the frost that will gather on the underside of the tarp. Dont waste your money on the spray stuff, used motor oil in a squirt can applied a couple times thru the winter works fine and is a no cost item. Frank.

Sometimes I'm slow to notice things, but a bit ago noticed I have a picture now like others have by their posts. It's pretty small for me to tell exactly what it is, it looks like felled trees??? How can I be sure they are "Hardwood" trees? Anybody else see something different there that I'm missing? Frank.

The only people I can think of that metric system was great for is the tool manufacturers. Now I have twice as many tools and twice as many tool boxes to get absolutely no more work done than I could do before the, (I can't think of an adjitive decent enough to use in public) metric BS came along. Chris; I'm in Iowa too. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but before you commit yopurself to ANY steel clad pole shed give a close look at a conventional frame building with a shingle roof. Shingle roofs don't leak, sweat or frost up. it's much easier to insulate, sheet rock, panel, wantever you want to do having conventional studs rather than poles to deal with. Now the amazing part, a conventional frame building with 2X6 studs costs amazingly little more than a pole shed. I just built my third frame shed and wouldn't even consider another pole shed. I agree with EW again!!! Yes flush those custom cut hoses, they have all the nasty stuff he speaks of in the end couple inches. I don't have any data on just how much but a custom cut hose must be made just a bit longer than the actual measurment needed. The reason being that because of the spiral wrap of the wire in the wall of the hose. When internal pressure is applied by the hydraulic fluid the hose expands just a tick in diamater making the hose a bit shorter under pressure. Frank.

Art, I can't remember the model number but the last series of Allis Chalmers pull type combines that were built had a two row cornhead available. A neighbor of ours had one sometime in the late fiftys. This same neighbor had the first Case Model 600 self propelled combine (no cab) in the neighborhood with a two row corn head, it cut the entire stalk with a kinfe similar to a corn head for a forage harvester and took the whole stalk thru the combine, needless to say power was an issue so that idea was dropped quickly. Case also had a cornhead for one of their last pull type combines from sometime in the fiftys also. The only one I ever saw belonged to my wife's Uncle. I'm also quite sure that if you will check the IHC archives website at The University of Wisconsin in Madison that a corn head either was experimented with or offered for the Model 80 IHC pull combine, but I never saw one. Cheif; The number of the kit is LVB 24795. That is not a part number but a whole goods order number. This number likely won't appear on the parts counter screen, ask a salesperson to bring it up as a whole goods item. The cost was 385.00 + 41.25 shipping. I had the dealer install it, but I can't determine the labor cost because it was part of some other service labor did at the same time. I do recall the service person saying it only took a couple hours to install. Frank.

Nostiener; I'm sure the dealer would order you a new one, but the small rust spots aren't that hard to correct. I'm sure you would pay a bit of a premium being he would have to bring the one you have back in and clean it up, and have a slighty higher houred new machine on the lot. The last two Deere's I bought I ordered simply because the dealer didn't have one on the lot that had the factory installed features I wanted. Frank.

BGreely; Maybe help us out a bit here. You say general farm use for the 12 acres, do you mean row crops, hay or pasture use, or maybe a truck garden. The equipment you will need to work the 12 acres will be different dependeng on your end use. Row crops will call for more power per acre than forage, so likely ag tires would be best there. Forage would be less power cemanding, but if you have big bales in mind they call for a tractor more in the 40-50 hp. range with ag or industrual tires. Truck gardening can call for lots of tillage, slow PTO tiller work, with either ag or industrial tires. In any case a front end loader is almost a must anymore, you will use it daily for somethng. They go on and off the tractor in a few minutes anymore. Others here can give more and better advice far as the brand of tractor is concerned, I have Deere, so I am not totally up on blue and orange.
